Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann – A Previewby Jill Jones -- 01/07/2008
View Printable version of this article Just when you thought it was safe to put your spandex and jazz hands away, ABC premieres Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann. I’m sure that when I get lazy, the show will simply be known as Dance War, but hopefully, that is a long way off. The new series, which airs on Mondays at 8:00 PM (EST) beginning tonight, is hosted by Drew Lachey and pits Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba against one another in a competition to find the best amateur performers. Not familiar with these individuals? Then let me get you up to speed. Drew is a former member of the singing group 98 Degrees. He also won the second season of Dancing with the Stars with his professional dance partner Cheryl Burke. Most recently, he partially hosted season five of that show while Samantha Harris was on maternity leave. Those were some good times. Bruno is also a familiar face to fans of Dancing with the Stars; he has been a judge on the show since its inception. Additionally, he has performed in various video and stage productions, choreographed films including Ella Enchanted and What a Girl Wants, and worked on concert tours for Tina Turner, Banarama, and Duran Duran. He won the most recent season of DanceX, the British program off of which Dance War is based. It appears as if he’s capable of doing anything he puts his mind to, but does that include beating his Dance Warcompetition, Carrie Ann Inaba? In addition to being a judge on Dancing with the Stars, Carrie Ann is also known for the time she spent as a member of the Fly Girls on In Living Color. She has also danced on tour with Madonna and Ricky Martin, and choreographed numbers for television programs such as American Idol, American Juniors, and The Swan. There’s no doubt that she’s going to hold her own against Bruno and give him a run for his money. The real question is, how many more clichés can I use in this article? The six-episode series will first feature Bruno and Carrie Ann selecting contestants at various casting calls in cities such as Nashville, Santa Monica, and New York City. What? No Pittsburgh? The live action later begins as Bruno and Carrie Ann choose teams to coach, choreograph for, and lead on to victory. Each week, after the teams perform, viewer votes will determine which was the week’s best team. The coach of the losing team will then eliminate someone from his or her team. The winners will eventually tour with a major performing artist. And yes, The Divinyls count as major. Where does the singing come in during the competition? Will there be a voice coach? Will Drew mentor and assist the participants? All of these questions are making my head spin. The only way to find out the answers is to get out your spandex and jazz hands, and join me tonight for the two-hour premiere of Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann. I’ll return each and every week after that to RealityNewsOnline to cover the action. Jill is an east coast mama who loves Michael Kors, Bea Arthur, and Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
