Dancing with the Stars 6, April 21: Let’s Get It On

by Jill Jones -- 04/22/2008
It’s week six of the competition. While there aren’t any major surprises, one couple scores the first triple goober this season and another dancer has issues with his crotch. The couples also perform the traditional group dance. Read on for Jill’s take on these and other riveting pieces of information.

Last week on Dancing with the Stars, Priscilla & My Louis were eliminated from the competition. The fun doesn’t end there, though. This week, the couples perform a solo dance in addition to a group dance. Which stars will overcome the challenge of learning two routines and which ones will falter? Yoko and I are ready to find out!

Tom and Samantha open the show and introduce the couples. The list is getting shorter and shorter.

The first couple to perform this fine evening is Edyta & Jason. Jason promises to dance more this week; Len requested it last week. Edyta needs for Jason to feel comfortable on his own. To help him out, she takes him to a free-style class.

They’re doing the cha cha cha to “You Got the Best of My Love.” The first thing I notice is the crotch of Jason’s pants; it seems to be a bit baggy. The dance is sexy and steamy, but Jason pays too much attention to Edyta. He also appears to be consciously counting. At this point in the competition, those habits should be broken.

Len says the dance contained a lot of content. Bruno tells Jason he made several mistakes that were obvious. Carrie Ann calls Jason out on the awkwardness of his arms.

All of the judges give the dance an eight. Edyta & Jason have 24 points.

The next couple is Shannon & Derek. Derek gives Shannon flowers during practice. She’s tense during practice, so Derek has her hula-hoop on the beach. The romance of the beach helps Shannon get into the feel of the rumba.

They are dancing to “True Colors.” The dance is romantic, but there are several movements that aren’t soft enough. The couple also makes a few mistakes, but overall, the performance is enjoyable. Shannon seems to enjoy herself and she’s not out of breath this week.

Bruno tells Shannon that she didn’t have enough hip action; Shannon’s face falls. Carrie Ann wants Shannon to sustain the great shapes she makes. Len enjoyed the chemistry of the pair.

Backstage, Samantha talks to Shannon & Derek about their closeness. Whoa, baby.

Once again, the judges give the dance an eight for a total of 24 points. Shannon & Derek and Edyta & Jason are tied at this point.

Up now are Marlee & Fabian. Fabian reminds Marlee that he is a mambo champion. During practice, Henry Winkler visits Marlee; apparently, they are friends, so she asked him to help her believe in herself. Is Fabian growing on everyone else the way he’s growing on me?

They are performing the mambo to a song I don’t catch. During the routine, Marlee makes several mistakes. I think that as the competition goes on, the dances become harder for her. The dance also seems a bit slow in places.

Carrie Ann says that the mambo is about the connection with the music; since Marlee is deaf, she couldn’t make that connection. Len calls Marlee an inspiration. Bruno points out some of Marlee’s errors, but says that she is achieving a lot.

Carrie Ann, Len, and Bruno all give the couple a seven. Marlee & Fabian have 21 points.

The next couple to dance is Cheryl & Cristián. Cheryl appears to be getting frustrated with Cristián during practice. Cristián wants to make Len happy this week. He also practices in a swimming pool and pulls Cheryl in. Like we didn’t see that coming.

They’re doing the foxtrot to “Come Fly With Me.” Cristián’s movements are smoother this week, but he still seems a bit unsure of what he’s doing. Cheryl molts and loses a few feathers from her costume. The foxtrot usually bores me, so I’m not really feeling this routine.

Len tells Cristián he will show his bum in a supermarket if Cheryl & Cristián are in the bottom two again. [Assistant Editor’s note: Next week, Len gives his scores from the local jail!] Bruno says this was Cristián at his best. Carrie Ann calls Cristián refined.

Each of the judges gives the routine a nine. The couple has 27 points. What?

Up next are Marissa & Tony. Marissa gets dizzy during practice due to the spins she has to do. She tells us that tonight is her night to be a princess.
