"I Was Looking Forward to the Commercial!" – An Interview with America's Next Top Model 11's Joslyn

by Phil Kural -- 10/27/2008
Joslyn was the most recent girl eliminated this season on America’s Next Top Model when the judges felt like she just wasn’t serving up photos like she was in the beginning of the competition. Did the competition take its toll on her? What about all the controversy in the house? Joslyn fills you in on all the dirt right here!

It’s no secret that MY Joslyn was my favorite girl this season. In fact, I’m not used to one of MY girls being eliminated so early – what am I going to do from this point on? Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to find a new favorite. Terrible how I have no loyalty whatsoever, isn’t it?

But this isn’t about me, it’s about MY Joslyn. Joslyn showed the judges this season that just because you aren’t taking the best photos of the bunch, you can make it pretty far on personality. Even though Joslyn was doing great as the competition started, she did struggle with her performance a little bit by the time she was eliminated. As always, I had a chance to chat with Joslyn about her time on the show, and she really did help shed some light on the whole ethnic controversy in the house.

RealityNewsOnline: Hey, Joslyn! Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with me today. We know you tried out for the show several times, so why did you decide to keep going?

Joslyn: I think it can be summed up in one word – faith. I had faith in myself and I knew that if I worked hard, I would be rewarded. I tried out four or five times per season, since Cycle 2. If I didn’t make it for Cycle 11, then you can bet I would have been in line for Cycle 12. I was involved in a reality TV scam that was NOT pleasant, and this guy really did take me for a run. You have to realize that there are creeps out there ready to scam you, and I was definitely scammed, but I still got right back up and tried again!

RNO: Going into the house, what was your strategy or how did you intend on sticking out from the rest of the girls?

Joslyn: Being me! I know I’m a bubbly, funny, and energetic person. And I knew the judges liked that about me, so I just played up to it. Knowing that I’m pretty personable, I knew that I was going to have to use my personality to my advantage, and just being me!

RNO: The judges, and even yourself, stated that you had begun to fade as the competition went on, picture-wise. What would you say that was the result of?

Joslyn: I did have some bad photos along the way, but I thought that most of my photos were pretty good! My biggest worry the whole time, especially during photo shoots, was that I had to satisfy the judges. Being in the bottom two the first time really showed me that. That’s when I began to get past it, but most of the time, that really did hinder my performance.

RNO: At the commercial shoot this week, you were pretty sick. What exactly was wrong and had you contemplated at any point not doing the shoot?

Joslyn: I was really sick and went to the emergency room a little bit before the shoot! I was just really dehydrated. I guess my body wasn’t keeping down food and I was throwing up everything. I never contemplated not doing the shoot. I like to talk, so I thought I’d be really good at it!

RNO: A huge focus this week was Elina and Marjorie versus Sheena and Samantha. Where did you fall in all this controversy?

Joslyn: I was cool with Sheena, Sam, and McKey. I mean, I wasn’t cool with them from the beginning, since I was more involved with Brittany and Isis, but they became my group after they left. I could never really figure out Elina at all. She’s young, and just wants to be against anything that anyone is for. My only issue with her was that she doesn’t practice what she preaches. So to say you are an atheist and then participate in a Christmas photo shoot is really hypocritical.

RNO: Do you think it’s fair at all for Elina and Marjorie to consistently use being “immigrants” as an excuse, or was it made into something bigger than it actually was?

Joslyn: It was definitely made into something bigger than it should have been. Elina and Marjorie bonded because nobody really “understood” them. They need to realize that the title of the show has the word “America’s” in it, and that when they win, or to win, you have to be able to relate to Americans! This isn’t World Culture Top Model! I consider them both Americans, and I think they used being from Europe as an excuse every time they didn’t do something right.

RNO: What did you think was harder – landing a good photo at the photo shoot, or shooting a good commercial? Which were you more comfortable doing?

Joslyn: I loved taking photos. Although, I would try and do what I wanted and look how I wanted, and then the judges told me that was definitely not the way to go. I thought I looked good! My style is me. I think when I tried to impress them though, it messed up my flow. I love talking so the commercial was something I thought I would do great at – at least I had fun!
