The Amazing Race 13, Episode 5: Waterworld

by Jenn Brasler -- 10/27/2008
Ken & Tina (right) have been on a roll, coming in first three out of four legs. Can they keep up their lead during a wet leg in Cambodia? Or will someone else topple the team at the top?

Previously on Now I Can Tell Everyone Apart, eight teams raced from La Paz, Bolivia, to Auckland, New Zealand. Aja & Ty have some issues to work out. Ken & Tina did the Fast Forward, climbing a huge building, despite Tina’s fear of heights. Kelly & Christy still hate Nick & Starr. Starr crashed during the Detour and injured her arm. Ken & Tina came in first yet again, and Marisa & Brooke were eliminated. My higher math skills tell me that means there are seven teams left.

Hi, sheep! A the Pit Stop Ken & Tina research the trip to Rio they won last week, then leave at 6:03 a.m. (Phil doesn’t mention when they arrived.) They’re headed to Siem Reap, Cambodia, specifically to a gas station. Ken interviews that it’s important for the two of them to have fun in everything they do, and they have fun doing things together. He forgets which side the steering wheel is on and Tina has to remind him. Ken accidentally calls her old in their interview.

Terence & Sarah leave more than two hours later. Terence interviews that he hopes the race gets more physical, because if it does, the two of them will be unstoppable. Well, as long as Sarah doesn’t run too fast, of course. Terence wants to get on a plane without anyone else seeing them. Good luck with that, since Ken & Tina are already at the airport.

Kelly & Christy are excited to go to Cambodia. Kelly interviews that they’re both intelligent, and now they’re going to utilize their brainpower to finish a leg in first place. They vow to do this by getting in line at the first ticket counter they see. Sounds like a plan.

Ken & Tina are told that their best option is a 12:25 p.m. through Singapore. Tina worries because Terence & Sarah could make the flight. Or not, since they’re currently being pulled over by a cop. Ken & Tina get seats on the flight. The cop tells Terence that he was doing 117 kilometers in a 100-kilometer-per-hour zone. Oops. Sarah notes that she always thought he was a slow driver. He calls her a jerk for that.

Toni & Dallas leave, Toni hoping that she can race smarter, not harder, because she knows she can’t keep up with the younger racers. She needs to make her intelligence work for her. She’s already ahead of Dallas, who doesn’t know where Cambodia is.

Terence & Sarah reach the airport and learn which travel route Ken & Tina are taking, but are told that it’s probably already closed. Meanwhile, Nick & Starr leave the Pit Stop, and she tells us her arm hurts but isn’t broken. She’s not going to let it get in their way, and Nick is sure she won’t. Terence & Sarah learn that the flight isn’t closed after all, and they may have a chance to get on it. Sarah outruns Terence and he complains. Waaaah. Ken & Tina board the flight as Sarah gleefully anticipates the looks on their faces when she and Terence board.

Andrew & Dan leave. Dan hopes there are just a few flights and they can get on an earlier one. Andrew says this race is the turning point for his relationship with Dan. Dan mocks him for not knowing where Cambodia is, and Andrew says he didn’t go to fancy private school like Dan. I hope he at least knows which continent Cambodia is on.

Kelly & Christy get on a 4:55 flight. Toni & Dallas spot them and get the same flight info, Dallas asking if they’re on the same flight as Kelly & Christy. The agent promises to try to get them on it. Kelly says Dallas’ hair is reminiscent of Teen Wolf, and they openly laugh at him. Dallas interviews that Christy & Kelly think they’re God’s gifts. He wonders what they look like without makeup. Kelly & Christy call Dallas & Toni “Teen Wolf and Wolf Mother.” Lame.

Aja & Ty leave at 3:04 p.m. Yikes. Aja interviews that their relationship is definitely being tested, but they’re going to try to respect each other all the time. Ty interviews that they have hiccups, but all their relationships do. He wouldn’t trade her in “for a Porsche or anything like that.” Heh. Aja gives him a funny look at that.

Dan doesn’t want to fight over getting out of last place with Ty & Aja. Ty will be happy to see Dan’s face when they catch up. Nick & Starr will be on same flight as Toni & Dallas and Kelly & Christy. Dan & Andrew may not be, but the agents everyone else has dealt with try to get them on. Aja anticipates her and Ty’s comeback. Dan & Andrew are told that they can’t make the 4:55 flight. They head to another airline with another helpful agent, and this one gets them on a flight. Andrew interviews that that was all Dan, and he never would have thought of it. So they’re on the flight with Toni & Dallas, Nick & Starr, and Kelly & Christy. Ty & Aja get another flight.?p>

Terence & Sarah and Ken & Tina arrive in Singapore, where all of the other teams (minus Aja & Ty) catch up to them. Aja & Ty are still in the race and still bickering about stuff. Aja interviews that she’s really attracted to him and feels butterflies when she’s with him. She feels energy passing between them when they hold hands.
