Surviving the Early Show: Bob Gets His Million-Dollar Checkby David Bloomberg -- 12/15/2008
View Printable version of this article While the Survivor contestants didn’t visit The Early Show this season, winner Bob was flown from L.A. into New York this morning to receive his check. The hostess says he arrived just an hour ago (and I was already able to interview him before he appeared here). The hostess says he looks like he still can’t believe it, and already Bob is reusing a line he told me, saying she needs to talk quietly because he’s living a dream and doesn’t want to wake up. What was he thinking in the five-hour plane ride? He says things happened so fast, he hasn’t had time to think. They whisked him away, he arrived and did two interviews (darn it, he was supposed to mention RealityNewsOnline on the air – I promised him five dollars to add to his $1.1 million if he did!). But did he know that when he wins, he gets more than just an interview on The Early Show? Indeed. In fact, she pulls out a check and says she never thought she’d have a real check for a million dollars. It’s not one of those giant showy ones, but the real McCoy that he can cash. He pulls out his wallet and says it won’t fit there, but she says it will fit in his bank account very nicely. “Lots of zeroes,” he says. What does he think his students will think about this? Bob again recycles a line, this time from last night’s reunion, saying they’re going to think they don’t have to take the test today, but they are. Still, they’ll be pretty excited. What is Bob going to do with the money? Bob answers that question essentially the same way he did when I asked, noting that he and his wife have been married for 28 years and never went on a honeymoon. They only spent four hours in Gabon, so maybe they’ll go back and have a proper vacation/honeymoon. The hostess questions him going back to where he “suffered and fought all these weeks,” but Bob says he didn’t suffer – he had a good time. There were some bad moments, but he had a great tribe and met some really nice people. Other than marrying Peg, it was one of the highlights of his life. Does he think his age helped him – is older, wiser? He thinks so. And his age helped him fly under the radar. Plus, when he needed to start winning challenges, the others didn’t expect it. He says he’s lucky to be in as good shape as he is, and Matty was a tough competitor – Ken wasn’t easy to beat, either. They gave him a run for his money. So there we have it. After watching, you kind of have to wonder: They flew Bob across the country for that?! Ah well, I guess it was worth it to him in order to pick up that million-dollar check! Once again, congratulations to Bob! If you haven’t already, be sure to check out these other recent Survivor: Gabon articles here on RealityNewsOnline:
