Here Come the Newlyweds 2, Episode 3: What a Bunch of Tools!by Jennifer Tsao -- 06/10/2009
View Printable version of this article The couples meet downstairs for breakfast and Pat introduces their challenge. He tells them that the pot is already $165,000. The challenge is to answer questions by matching your partner’s response. For each correct answer, the pot will be increased by $5000. The first question is to the Coxes. Pat asks Matt what was the first thing Ashley bought him. He says sneakers, but Ashley says a teddy bear. Matt is embarrassed that everyone knows that Ashley bought him a stuffed animal. Same question for the Hinkins and they have a match with “Cars” bedding. What a bizarre first present. Is Jed twelve? The Iengs don’t have a match as Michele says a watch and Sonarak says shoes. The Corlisses match with a shirt and the McMorrises match with a sweater and boots. Kenny McMorris mentions that he told Makayla he loved her the day after she gave him the sweater and boots. He also mentions it took Makayla a month to say it back to him. Poor Kenny. Audra Newbery tells us she bought Rich a t-shirt, Rich couldn’t think of anything specific to write down at all – no match. The Huffmans also fail to match as Bridget says a book and Brendan says pizza making supplies. The next question is, “After you moved in together, what thing did you bring into the relationship that your wife couldn’t stand?” This one would be easy for me. My husband had this awful leather chair which I hated. We kept it and turns out I sit in it all the time. The Coxes are up first and they both say nothing for a match. The Hinkins also both say nothing. Sonarak says both couples are lying. The Iengs have a match with an X-Box. The Corlisses and the McMorrisses both have mismatches and the Newberys match with nothing. Bridget Huffman says, “lame wall tapestry things,” and Brendan looks surprised. He thought she hated his speakers, not his lame wall tapestry things! Pat tells the couples that they so far they have seven matches and another $35,000 for the pot. The next question for the Coxes is, “How many pairs of shoes does your wife own?” They don’t match. That’s a pretty hard question given that they couples need to come up with an exact number. I don’t even know exactly how many pairs of shoes I own. The Hinkins are asked what Sarin’s first car is and there is no match. The Iengs are asked when Sonarak lost his virginity. Sonarak says 17 but Michele says 18 – no match. Pat wants to know what the first movie the Corlisses saw together was and Mark says The Da Vinci Code while Marlo says 28 Days Later. They haven’t been together very long if either one of those is the right answer. Mikayla and Kenny have a match by answering that Lil’ Wayne is Kenny’s favorite recording artist. Rich Newberry gets a match by correctly identifying Audra’s bra size as a 36C and Bridget gets a match by correctly identifying Brendan’s previous girlfriend. Overall, the couples have ten matches and have added $50,000 to the pot. The couples go to the backyard and meet Shama, a tantric educator. She is going to teach the couples techniques to enhance their sexuality and unleash their orgasmic energy (she really did say that). I can’t really describe what happens next, only that is looks like the couples are all doing interesting yoga poses while practicing breathing techniques. The next day, Pat greets the couples again and tells them they are going “off-campus.” The couples are taken to a hardware store. The women are going to go shopping and the men will communicate with their wives only via cell phone. The men have a shopping list, but they are not allowed to say the names of the items on the list. They can only describe them. It’s kind of like $10,000 pyramid, but with hammers and screwdrivers. Pat reminds the couples that the winners of this challenge will be safe from being voted off. We see a montage of the husbands describing the various tools. The interesting thing is that many of the wives probably wouldn’t even know the tools even if they had the list in front of them. Poor Audra is also dealing with Rich’s British English as he describes things with British-isms. Mark Corliss tries to describe rope to his wife as something he’d tie her up with and she goes to look for extension cords! It is unclear if any of the couples are successful at this challenge. There is a tie for fifth and last place. The McMorrises and the Newberys each got 13 items. The Iengs are in fourth place with 15 items. The Coxes and the Corlisses tie for third place with 16 items each. Only the Hinkins and Huffmans are left. The Huffmans win with 21 items, which beats the 19 items the Hinkins got. Pat offers the Huffmans $20,000 to give up their safety in the elimination vote. The Huffmans discuss the offer and decide to give up the money and keep their safety. I think that’s the smart decision, as we saw in the first episode. We see the couples the next day discussing the vote. There seems to be a lot of discussion about the Corlisses not fitting in with the other couples. We’ll see if that’s foreshadowing or not. Pat takes each of the couples out individually to reveal their vote. The only votes we get to see are the Coxes, who vote for the Corlisses, and the Newberys who vote for the Coxes, but there are several mentions of the Iengs as well. Pat calls the Corlisses and the Coxes forward as the two couples who received the most votes. Ashley Cox is shocked. Pat tells us that the Corlisses are staying and the Coxes are leaving. I’m shocked! Bridget Huffman and Sarin Hinkins look shocked too! Next week, the newlyweds have to run a carnival booth for kids! Jennifer Tsao lives in Manhattan with her husband and infant son.
