Here Come the Newlyweds 2, Episode 5: You Are What You Eatby Jennifer Tsao -- 06/24/2009
View Printable version of this article Last week, to no one’s surprise, we finally said goodbye to the Huffmans. We are now down to only five couples; which one of them will be sent packing tonight? The remaining five couples gather around Pat in the living room to find out about their first challenge. Pat tells the couples that the pot is now $265,000 and that it is time for another “how well do you know your spouse” game. This time, Pat sends the women out to the yard for a gourmet breakfast. I’ve got to say, it looks awesome! There are a ton of baked goods and fruit and a chef making omelets, breakfast meats, pancakes, and waffles. The wives don’t know it, but their breakfast choices are part of the next challenge. Each husband has to identify which of the breakfast plates belongs to his wife. For each correct match, $15,000 is added to the pot. This challenge is awesome! Once the women finish getting their breakfasts, the plates are all placed on pedestals and each husband has to stand behind the plate that he thinks belongs to his wife. This challenge is a little different than most, as the men actually are working together to figure out which plate goes with which wife. Pat asks the wives, one by one, to go stand by their plate to see if their husbands guessed right. Sonarak guessed Michele’s correctly and Jed guessed Sarin’s correctly. Makayla McMorris does a big fake out and starts to stand by Rich Newbery. Kenny looks nervous, but then Makayla lets him know she was kidding and he did get her plate correct. The Corlisses match and that leaves the Newberys, who obviously match as well. Pat tells the couples that $75,000 has been added to final prize. The pot is now $340,000. The couples now get to eat their breakfasts. I hope the wives can get new plates of food because I’d guess their original plates have been sitting out for a while now! We either have some weird editing or the couples are alcoholics. The next scene, which Mark Corliss tells us is right after the challenge, is back in the house and everyone is drinking wine and beer. I’m all for bloody marys or mimosas at brunch, but beer seems a little out of place to me. The couples hang out and they all seem to get along. The votes are going to get much harder and much more strategic because I don’t think there is a couple that is disliked. The next day, Pat greets the couples and introduces the challenge for safety in the vote. This week’s safety challenge is to pack a minivan. There are suitcases, baby strollers, camping gear, duffel bags, and just a ton of stuff. The couple that loads everything in the minivan in the fastest time wins safety from the vote. The Corlisses are up first and Mark and Marlo just look at the pile of stuff like they have no idea what to do with it. It turns out that all the luggage, trunks, and pet carriers are empty, so the Corlisses wisely start to stuff things inside the empty containers. The McMorrises have a divide and conquer strategy – Mikayla packs the luggage while Kenny packs the car. The Hinkins seem to be working really well together, although Jed tells us, “minivans bring out the worst in people.” Michele and Sonarak Ieng have a hard time folding the stroller and Sonarak comments on how big it is. As a new mother with a big stroller, I can just say that Sonarak has no idea what he’s talking about. The Newberys seem to be just shoving everything in the minivan haphazardly and it is unclear if they are ever going to get everything in. Pat announces the results. The Iengs are in fifth and last place. The Hinkins are in fourth place – so much for their winning streak. The Corlisses are in third place, which leaves the McMorrises and the Newberys. Pat tells us that the McMorrises are in second place, which means the Newberys have won safety from the vote and the challenge editing was pretty misleading. Pat offers the Newberys $30,000 to give up their safety. Rich tells us that the big consideration is if they would be voted off because they took the money. He’s absolutely right. The Newberys decide to give the money back and keep their safety. The couples hang out and talk about the vote. Mark Corliss approaches Jed Hinkins and Kenny McMorris and tells them he is thinking of voting out the Iengs. Of course, at that exact moment, Sonarak Ieng walks up. Awkward! The couples gather in the backyard and, as usual, Pat takes each couple one by one to get their vote. The only vote we get to hear is the Corlisses, who vote for the Iengs. This may be a good time to comment on Sarin Hinkins’ hair. It’s almost as messed up as Kate Gosslein’s! Seriously, I’m not quite sure what look she is trying to go for, but she could really use a haircut and styling. Pat tells us he is going to call out the two couples that received the most votes. He calls the Corlisses, and Marlo looks like she is ready to get up, but Pat is just kidding. The Corlisses aren’t in the bottom two this week. The Iengs and the Hinkins, however, are. I’m not surprised the Hinkins are in the bottom. They are a strong couple and have won a lot of challenges and it makes strategic sense for the other couples to vote for them. Pat announces that the Hinkins are staying and the Iengs are going home. I liked the Iengs. With their departure, we are left with four couples devoid of senses of humor. Next week, in what looks like a challenge lifted straight from Top Design, the couples have to decorate a room together. Jennifer Tsao lives in Manhattan with her husband and infant son.
