The Real Gilligan’s Island 2, Episode 7: You Were Warnedby William Ingram -- 07/02/2005
View Printable version of this article You better get me a bowl of guacamole” -- “Taco Grande,” Weird Al Yankovic, 1992 This is the seventh hour of our coverage of the second season of The Real Gilligan’s Island. You can read about episode six in my review or I can give you the short version: orange team leads four to three… Randi betrays orange… Millionaire Bounce bounced… Shawn worried… fake apologies… Randi turns again… Erika betrays Melissa… Millionaire Melissa bounced… Skipper worried. We start the show right where we left off. Professor Tiy-e and Gilligan Shawn are alone together. This time, they are in the shower and Shawn is shaving his chest hair. Tiy-e asks if he’s going on a date or something. Shawn tells us that shaving his chest is a strategic move in that it should help him swim faster. He learned that from Mark Spitz in the 1984 Olympics. Of course, it’s also a good strategic move because Professor Tiy-e would never vote him off the island now. Tiy-e helps Shawn out by rubbing his chest and pointing out spots that he missed. He offers to hold Shawn’s hand to guide the razor. Skipper Charlie points out the obvious and says that Shawn and Tiy-e have bonded. He doesn’t care what they do with their bond, however. Meanwhile, Erika and Randi are discussing strategy. They think Tiy-e is the strongest player left. Randi tells us that she trusts Erika. Of course, if I were on the island, I might point out that Miss Melissa trusted Erika too and look what happened to her! Back over with the boys, they are still grooming together, as Shawn has gotten out the nail clippers. They point out that the two of them are an alliance and Erika and Randi are an alliance. The Skipper seems to be the swing vote. Yet, they go for the worst strategy at this point. They try to talk Erika into an alliance with them. They know that Randi would be her little shadow, making their only possible target Charlie. But, after that, it would be two against two and they’d have no better than a toss up. Goof Alert! In this scene, Shawn clearly has chest hair. So, the editors are showing us the footage out of order. I’m not quite sure why, however. Perhaps they want us to think that an alliance with Erika is an afterthought. Later, we hear Erika tell the Skipper that he is safe with her. Of course, we know that kind of promise isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. Soon enough, the radio crackles to life and invites them down to the beach for the final reward competition. Shawn tells us that he’d rather have an elimination challenge so that he could get rid of “some of these schmoes.” Scott meets them and explains the game. Each player has a treasure chest with a covered dinner platter on top. They’ve seen enough reality TV to know that a covered platter means gross food. But, as they lift the covers, they find nice treats like nachos and buffalo wings. And there is a second part of the reward: videos from home. Buried in the sand are gold nuggets. When a player finds one, he can put it on the scale or in their own private box. If enough are put on the scale, the group wins the videos. Also, whichever castaway has the most nuggets in their own chest wins their special meal. And with that, Scott waves his arm and they’re off! Everyone seems to be going for the videos except Randi. She is filling her own box. I tell you, it’s like none of these people have ever watched a reality show before. Being blatantly selfish is a sure fire way to get everyone to hate you. Skipper soon joins Randi in filling up his own box. He says he doesn’t have anyone at home who he’d want to see on a video. Randi does feel guilty, but says that she’s more hungry than guilty. Time’s up and Scott tells them to drop their gold. He weighs the video gold and the castaways win. Scott weighs the treasure chests and Skipper Charlie wins a plate of nachos. The Skipper picks up his nachos and heads off to the fate that rests in the hands of the others. Back at camp, Charlie eats his nachos while everyone else drools over them. Charlie eats them slowly so that every crunch of a nacho echoes across the camp. Soon, talk turns to the videos and everyone wonders who could be on theirs. Shawn and Tiy-e make fun of Charlie’s not having anyone at home. Shawn even imagines that Charlie’s dead mother might be on it. They head off to watch the videos. 1 2 Next-->View Printable version of this article |
