The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet 2, Episode 12 – Tire-Some

by Chris Jakobi -- 02/22/2006
In the twelfth episode of The Gauntlet 2 one would think there would be a lot of surprises going on. So is that the truth? Will Beth pull through for her team? Will Alton play the strong nice guy card? Will Katie (right) speak?

Last week on The Gauntlet 2: The Veterans finally broke their four game losing streak. Rivals Cara and Kina fought in the Gauntlet and Cara had to leave.

Bar scene. Everybody is partying and having a good time!

Everybody except Jeremy, that is. He doesn’t think his team has self control and that will transpire into the mission.

Beth talks to David and says that you have to believe that every mission is your last one. Well, Beth, your team would like every mission to be your last one. She says that she’s one of the strongest people on the team but the rest of the team doesn’t think that. David tells us he’s nervous for her to stay, and that he can’t trust her as far as he can throw her. No chubby jokes please. He adds that there is something ingrained in her that is naturally deceptive.

Alton is at a powwow with the Rookies. Alton says that the last loss was a wake-up call, and M.J. adds that this is not a vacation anymore.

They all gather at the mission site. T.J. says that the mission today is called “Spare Tires.” Again, no chubby Beth jokes. There is a row of tires above the water, and team members have to go one by one up a ladder and through the tires letting one go each time. If they make it through all of them they get as many points as there are tires, but if they fall in they get zero points. If someone falls, then the next person will have to release two tires. There is a ten-minute time limit that they can be up there. Whichever team has toe most points win.

It is a male Gauntlet day so the winning male captain (Alton or Derrick) gets a Sirius Boom Box and a year’s subscription for free. Ooh, I want that. The losing male captain has to go into the Gauntlet.

Brad is worried about Beth. The Rookies have to sit someone out, and they choose Randy. The Veterans just want Beth to finish, so they put her to go third.

The Veterans go first. Katie starts. She says there is a disadvantage for short people, but she finishes and gets twenty-three points. Davis is next and as he is going through the tires, his swimming trunks slip off but luckily (I guess) there is a Speedo underneath. Beth is next up and worries abound.

Beth is going really slowly. Brad doesn’t see any effort. Robin tells us that the team decides that Beth should just drop, giving her a score of zero. Brad gets twenty points. Aneesa gets nineteen. Timmy gets eighteen. Robin gets seventeen. Derrick gets sixteen. Julie gets fifteen. Mark is the anchor, and he gets fourteen. The Veterans final score: 163.

The Rookies go. Ibis is first. She struggles and gets caught between two tires and falls. The Vets celebrate, knowing that they probably have this won. M.J. gets twenty-two points. Jillian gets twenty-one. Jamie, Susie, Jeremy, Kina, Landon, and Jodi all get through their tires and get their respective points.

Alton is the last member to go. He drops his first tire and has to swing through a long gap to the next one. He ends up on only one tire. Julie thinks he is going to try and jump. He ends up hanging from the tire with less than ten seconds to go and he drops.

The Veterans win 163-148 tires. Derrick collects his boom box and obtusely large check. Alton will have to pick someone to go into the Gauntlet with him.

At the deliberations Alton names Jeremy as his opponent. Jeremy tells us that he is really surprised to be picked. When T.J. comes in he asks if he kind of had a feeling about it, to which Jeremy answers that he didn’t. Awkward moment there. T.J. spins the wheel and it lands on “Capture the Flag.” Can we just say that Alton wins and get it over with?

T.J. brings Alton and Jeremy into the Gauntlet. The event is to race up to the top of the net and, well, capture the flag. Alton says that he hopes God has him in his favor today. While Jeremy waits he prays to the Lord. Ooh, God has to choose now! Who does God want to be the new male Rookie team captain of the Gauntlet 2?

So who does God choose? In really no contest, Alton.

Jeremy doesn’t want to go home since it is so close to the end. He thinks being withdrawn from the parties and late night drinking escapades was his detriment.

Brad thinks Beth is a disease to the team. Beth says that she never said she was perfect and blah, blah, blah. David says she has to perform well if she makes it to the final mission.

Next week: Kina is angry (no surprise). Derrick is upset (no surprise). Beth is pissed (no surprise). Aneesa is ready to kill Beth, or as she calls her, “that bitch.” That’s sort of a surprise.

Chris Jakobi is not sure if he can take on as many crazies as there are on this show, but he is willing to try. Fan mail, hate mail or advice can be sent to cjakobi9@yahoo.com.
