The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet 2, Episode 14 - The Pit

by Chris Jakobi -- 03/08/2006
On the last day of the men’s Gauntlet, the teams face a difficult mission called “The Pit.” How are the teams going to get out of a giant pit using pool noodles, duct tape, and pantyhose? And who will have to face the final male Gauntlet, Derrick or Alton (right)?

Previously on The Gauntlet 2: There was a question of whether Jodi and Alton would hook-up. The Veterans lost another mission and Beth quit leaving Aneesa as the new female captain.

Party scene. Randy and Kina are together. Robin and Mark are together. Jodi and Alton are together. Alton says that he gravitates towards her. He wants a relationship for friendship that will last beyond Tobago. Hmm… Those are two very different things, especially in The Real World setting. Jillian thinks it’s great that they are together, since they both just got out of difficult breakups, but she hopes it doesn’t affect the team at all. On the bus Alton and Jodi kiss.

Jodi talks to Kina and Ibis the next day (or what BMP wants us to think the next day, for all we know Jo is still the captain when this conversation took place.) Kina worries about Jodi because she goes looking for love in all the wrong places. This is from a girl who was with Derrick on her season. Jodi just doesn’t want to be the transition girl.

I usually don’t highlight the clue the teams get because it’s a boring product placement, but this time it’s actually entertaining because the Rookie girls guess EXACTLY what the mission is. That never happens with Tyra Mail.

Jodi doesn’t want to see Alton in the Gauntlet for obvious reasons. Jamie thinks he’s on the chopping block. Brad is focusing on the win. Derrick doesn’t care if he has to go in the Gauntlet because he’s been there before.

At the challenge site, which is basically a giant wooden box with a side and a top, T.J. explains the challenge for today called “The Pit.” The teams will start with everyone at the bottom of the pit. They will have to get themselves out through the top using the random items provided. They will have thirty minutes to do that, and if a player gets out of the pit and falls back in they are disqualified. Whoever can get the most people out of the pit will win the challenge. If it’s a tie, time will be the tiebreaker.

T.J. says that while the first team goes, the other team will be sequestered. Timmy explains: “It clearly will be an unfair advantage if one team can see the other team perform, which gives T.J. they chance to use the word ‘sequester.’” The winner will get some electronic equipment I wouldn’t have the faintest idea what to do with and would list on eBay.

The Rookies have to choose one male to sit out, and they would also be exempt from going to the Gauntlet that round. Randy is chosen.

The Rookies start. Ibis explains what they’re given to work with as “the most random sh*t she’s ever seen.” They form a human ladder to get Alton and M.J. up then have the girls climb up the rest of the guys with all of the crap. Landon is the last person in the pit.

At the sequester, Julie says that now is the time they can decide who can do what. She says that it is an advantage to go second because it gives them a half of an hour to strategize.

Landon is trying to pull himself up with a rope of pantyhose. Doesn’t work. How about noodles duct taped together? Doesn’t work. Alton gets the idea to have the rest of his team dangle Alton down so Landon can climb up him. Alton figures, since his ass is on the line he’ll take the risk. As Kina worries about him, we fade to commercial.

After the commercial we don’t see the results of the Rookies, we fast forward to the Veterans end of the mission. Robin says that the technique they will use is one from cheerleading. They start hurling people up there until there is one person left, Timmy with twenty-four minutes left on the clock.

Timmy tries a bunch of resources that Landon tried and Mark offers the solution that Alton tried but the team says no. Twelve minutes are on the clock.

Timmy comes up with a brilliant solution that they will make a rope out of pantyhose and he will duct tape his feet to a yoga ball. There is a minute left. It works just about as well as it sounds and time runs out.

T.J. reveals the results and the Rookies win, because they got their ninth person over, and indeed we see Alton getting Landon over the pit. Alton collects his electronic package and obtusely large check.

Derrick interviews that he saw a weakness with Timmy today with balance and that he couldn’t pull his own weight.

At the house the Veterans deliberate. Aneesa says that the vote is between Brad, Timmy, and David. Derrick counts the votes and curses. T.J. comes in and announces it’s Brad in the Gauntlet. The wheel is spun and it’s “Captain’s Choice.” Derrick picks “Name that Coconut.”

The Gauntlet starts. The first question is “On Inferno 2, this cast member caused a huge fight between Robin and Tonya over Mark.” The answer of course is the dearly departed Beth. Gone but not forgotten. Derrick gets the point.

The second question is “Who was almost fired from her job in Boston?” During this Susie says she’s rooting for Brad as the underdog. Derrick answers Montana, which is correct. He leads 2-0.

Question three: “On Real World: San Diego, who was unable to get into a club because they tried to use a fake I.D.?” This is Brad’s season so he better get this right. Derrick answers “Robin” which is incorrect (she’s a Coyote!) and Brad answers “Cameran” which is correct. If I remember correctly, Brad gave her said I.D. Derrick leads 2-1.

Question four: “During the first season of The Inferno, who smoked a cigarette while competing in an Inferno?” Derrick answers the question correctly with chimney and badass Katie. Derrick leads 3-1.

The fifth question is “Who knocked out Mary Beth on a face-off challenge on Road Rules?” This is one that I actually don’t know. The answer is Jillian and Derrick gets the question right. Derrick needs one more to win.

Question six: “Who had to go skinny dipping after losing a bet on Inferno 2?” Brad answers Jodi and Derrick still needs one more with a 4-2 lead.

Lucky question seven is “Who was sent home after losing in a bull-riding competition on the first season of The Gauntlet?” Derrick answers Montana and wins another Gauntlet. He remains the team captain.

Brad wonders why he gets voted off at the end so much. He says he really wants to win one but apparently it’s no dice. He says he didn’t see the loss coming or the Gauntlet coming. Julie interviews that they are losing another male, and not only that, but someone who would help them in the final mission. She says it’s a terrible, terrible day. As Brad’s car drives off there are a lot of loving messages to him. So, the opposite of Beth’s departure.

Alton and Jodi talk about their relationship. She asks if she’s his transition, and then regrets it as it comes out of her mouth. He says that to a certain degree she is. He doesn’t want her to feel like he’s using her, but he wants their friendship to stay, even back into the states. She wants to be friends in and out of the situation. He just doesn’t want her to act like a weirdo. Fantastic.

Next week: The challenge is “Blind Trust.” Kina freaks out. Lovely.

Chris Jakobi is not sure if he can take on as many crazies as there are on this show, but he is willing to try. Fan mail, hate mail or advice can be sent to cjakobi9@yahoo.com.
