The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet 2, Episode 16: The Mission’s VIP

by Chris Jakobi -- 03/21/2006
It’s the final Gauntlet of the season and tensions run high. After a simple mission, the meeting for the Gauntlet goes over the edge and by the end of the meeting somebody’s missing a leg. Who is the last champion of the Gauntlet? Where does Kina’s boy-toy Randy (right) play in this?

Previously on The Gauntlet 2: The Veterans won the final female mission securing their women, while Kina bitched, moaned, and sent home Jillian in the final female Gauntlet.

Kina and Alton talk about the next Gauntlet. She learns that the next guy that Alton would pick to face him in the Gauntlet is Randy. Randy, if you all remember, is Kina’s boyfriend. So Kina isn’t too crazy about this. She tells him it’s obvious why Alton would pick him, but she thinks that it sucks. He agrees but says to think about the final mission and if they had to hoist him over a wall because of his weight. They both say that they’re going to win anyway, so it doesn’t matter.

Alton tells the camera that he would send Randy because he is the chunkiest guy on their team. Chunky? He adds that Randy is as strong as a tank but as big as one also.

Later, Kina tells Ibis that Alton thinks Randy would be the next person on the chopping block. Ibis is shocked by that. She wonders if they are thinking that they only need jocks at the end of the day. Kina says she sees it, but it’s stupid. Ibis says Randy’s brilliant.

The remaining Veteran girls are in the kitchen, and they decide to bake cookies for the remaining boys on their team. Aneesa has no idea how to use an oven and Robin makes fun of her for that. Aneesa jokes that at least she knows her left from her right, referring to the last mission where she kept telling Timmy the wrong directions. Sidenote: I saw on The Soup the rapid-fire clip of the moment last episode where T.J. told the Veterans they won. Why was it on The Soup? Because upon hearing it the women started jumping up and down out of joy and Robin fell right out of her top. It was hilarious and I can’t believe I missed that, but it was extremely fast.

Anyway. Julie tells us that it is essential that they so they can keep everyone for the final mission.

Kina and Randy sit out on the deck. Randy tells her that it isn’t about the money he just wants to be with her at the end. Aww… Barf. Randy knows that his name is in Alton’s mind.

The Veteran girls deliver their cookies to the boys. Timmy says that he tastes love.

During dinner, Timmy picks up their clue for the mission. He reads “I hope you’ve brought your ice skates!” Ibis has a shocked look on her face. Timmy says he’s kidding. Oh, crazy Timmy. He interviews that he knows that if his team loses, he’s the one going in.

Derrick tells his team that this is where you find out who wants to be here and who doesn’t. Timmy says that they deserve not to send Derrick into the Gauntlet. He adds that they have become really strong without “Bad, Beth, and Beyond.” That is one of the funniest things I’ve heard in awhile.

At a very rainy mission site, T.J. enters in on a bike. Oh yeah, he’s a BMX biker or something. The challenge is “Piece By Piece.” That is also the name of Tori Amos’ memoir that I have recently read and enjoyed thoroughly because I’m a nerd. But I digress.

T.J. shows them that the bike is a Schwinn T.J. Lavin signature bike. The mission is for the team to take apart the bike, put it back together, and race it. The teams will be split into the assemblers and the disassemblers. The dissassemblers will have to run to a mat with the bike and take the bike apart. When they are done, the assemblers will put the bike back together, and the team captain will ride it to the finish line. There will be walkie talkies between both parts of the team. And if any part of the bike is incorrect, they need to go back and fix it.

The winning team will get $10,000 for their team bank account and the winning male captain (Alton or Derrick) will get a T.J. Lavin signature bike. The loser will face the final Gauntlet.

Ibis says that everyone is feeling nervous because even though the girls know that they are all safe, they know that they need their boys for the final mission.

Derrick says that he has had four Gauntlets and is not looking forward to a fifth.

Randy tells us that he and Jamie used to work on bikes and take them apart, so he they should be an asset to the team. Kina says that the girls don’t know a damn thing about bicycles, but that Randy should shine in the mission. She thinks that he has the potential to be MVP.

The dissassemblers go first and it’s Mark, Katie, Robin, and David for the Veterans. For the Rookies it’s Kina, Susie, M.J., Landon, and Jodi.

Derrick sees that David is jogging to the bike mat and gets really pissed about that. The Rookies get annoyed with Alton overusing the walkie talkie every five seconds, and on two separate occasions, Landon and Susie both tell him to shut up.

T.J. gives the Rookie disassemblers the okay to run back. The Rookie assemblers, which include Jamie, Randy, Ibis, and Alton, run to the mat. After he gives the Veterans the okay, the Veteran assemblers consisting of Timmy, Derrick, Aneesa, and Julie sprint (not like David) to the mat.

The Rookies have the bike assembled and Alton rides over the finish line. After a check from T.J., the Rookies win!

Alton is elated that he made it from “Royal Rumble” to the finals. That’s true; he’s the only person to make it all the way through as captain. Jo, Ruthie, and Adam L. were all either defeated or went crazy and ran home.

T.J. gives Alton his obtusely large check and bike. T.J. then tells Randy that he was the “VIP” for the day. Um…what? Sorry T.J., you made it so far without having a big Julie Chen mistake on your record, but this is the closest you’ve come.

At the Gauntlet deliberations, Derrick says that nobody can knock people for not knowing how to (dis)assemble a bike, but you can go off of effort. He hopes everyone makes the right choice. Timmy wants to volunteer himself, but Derrick doesn’t want that, nor do other people.

Julie tells us that it’s between Timmy and David. Derrick says that it’s a tie and two people didn’t vote, so they will revote. David tries to pick out the people who didn’t vote and he looks at Katie. Katie tells us that she and Aneesa didn’t vote in the first vote.

David thinks Derrick is dumb because David is twice as big as he is. Derrick recounts the vote and it’s a tie again. He asks who he thinks is right. Julie thinks maybe the captain should choose. Everyone then starts screaming and talking over one another. Mark reminds them that they are a team and they need to work together tomorrow.

Julie thinks that Derrick needs to step up as captain and make a decision. Timmy wants Derrick to look after himself. Derrick starts kicking the table. He kicks one leg off. He kicks another leg off. Wow, he’s pulling a ‘Wes.’

T.J. comes in and Derrick says that one of the guys needs to stand up. As Derrick breaks the third leg, Timmy gets up. T.J. says that he wants Derrick to spin the wheel. He spins it and it lands on “Reverse Tug-O-War.” Derrick kicks the last leg.

Timmy tells the camera that if he goes homes it won’t bother him because he doesn’t believe in the team right now because there is so much diversity. David hopes that Derrick goes home.

At the Gauntlet site T.J. brings Derrick and Timmy out. T.J. says that Derrick is the most decorated Gauntlet member and we see clips of him beating Adam L., Ace, Syrus, and Brad.

T.J. says that they know the game so they can get to it. He rings the bell and the episode stops.

Next week: Derrick doesn’t want to lose the Gauntlet. The final challenge is for $150,000. There is yelling back and forth with Kina yelling “We f***ing won!!”

Chris Jakobi is not sure if he can take on as many crazies as there are on this show, but he is willing to try. Fan mail, hate mail or advice can be sent to cjakobi9@yahoo.com.
