The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet 2, Finale: A Giant Poker Gameby Chris Jakobi -- 03/30/2006
View Printable version of this article Last week: The Rookies won the last Gauntlet bound mission. At the deliberations, it was between David and Timmy, which resulted in two ties, a meltdown from Derrick, and a table without any more legs. Derrick says that he has been through four Gauntlets already and in this one he is praying he doesn’t lose. Katie says that they are both really strong players, that Timmy is such a great asset to the team and she feels like Derrick deserves to be here more than anyone. T.J. rings the bell for the Gauntlet to start. Timmy looks like he’s winning but Derrick isn’t giving up. Timmy reaches the flag and wins. Sad music plays. Derrick is still lying in the sand. Jodi interviews that her heart aches for Derrick because he worked so hard to get there. Timmy says that he won but feels like he just lost because he knows that Derrick has more heart than any cast member there, and he should be there at the end. Derrick says that he failed. Timmy tells Derrick that he deserves to be there more than anyone. Julie says that Derrick keeps the team together and that the team could not be in a worse mood. T.J. congratulates Timmy as the new team captain. Both sides give Derrick a round of applause. Ouch. Derrick was the in the first Gauntlet and took more hits than anyone. He had to deal with Beth, for one, and with that he saw so many good team members go. Everyone could see that Derrick gave it the most heart, as cliché as that may sound. Kina, Ibis, and Jodi (with a beer) cry when hugging Derrick. Alton interviews that it’s hard to watch the undefeated champion go home. Katie says that the only thing they can do is fight to win the final, because that’s what he would want them to do. Derrick’s advice for the Rookies and the Veterans is “No pain. No gain.” The cast members get their clue to the final challenge and Alton congratulates everyone. The Veterans get ready. Timmy is holding a gigantic pair of granny panties and says “Someone clearly left Beth’s underwear.” He holds them by Katie and says “See, I got Beth’s bloomers here.” Kina tells Ibis and Susie that they “cannot cannot cannot cannot cannot lose.” You sure, Kina? They all head to the final challenge at the Gauntlet site. The final challenge is called “Bet Your Booty” and it is worth $150,000 U.S. dollars. And yes, they said U.S. T.J. explains that they will be competing in three challenges today. The first round is eating twelve pounds of roti. The next is “Pirate Memory” which is a good old fashioned memory game. And the last one is the Sand Sprint, which is a relay race “depending on how many people you have.” Hmm. He says that all players must and can compete in only one round. Each team will be given 250 gold doubloons, or for the non-pirates out there, coins. They will be betting on each competition. Julie explains that they can put as many people in any competition as they want, but there must be at least one person in each. Also, they must bet at least one doubloon for each round. Whoever has the most gold coins at the end of the day wins the final Gauntlet and $150,000. They have a half hour to deliberate on what will go down. The Rookies say that they’ll put 248 coins on Sand Sprint. Here is how the Rookies team breaks down. Randy, Jamie, Ibis, and Jodi will be doing the eating for one doubloon. Susie, and Kina will do the memory for one doubloon and Landon, Alton, and M.J. will do the relay for 248 doubloons. The Veterans deliberate. Julie suggests putting the most they can on the eating, and loading up as many people as they can on it. Timmy says that this is officially a poker game and they are betting the house on the roti. The makeup of the Veterans team had Timmy, Robin, Mark, Julie, and David on the eating competition for 248 doubloons. Katie is alone on the memory and Aneesa is alone on the relay. They have one doubloon each. T.J. explains part one. Roti is a delicacy in Tobago and they will be, as a team, eating twelve pounds of it. David says that roti is the Caribbean equivalent of a burrito. He says that it is a conglomerate of potatoes, bones, etc. The first team to throw up automatically loses, and the first team to get it all down wins. For the eating contest it is Mark, Julie, Timmy, Robin, and David vs. Jamie, Jodi, Ibis, and Randy. T.J. rings the bell and the chowing down commences. Jamie tells us there are a few moments that he feels like he’s going to throw up. Julie wonders how they are keeping up with the Veterans because the Rookies have one less member. Susie screams from the side that Ibis is an animal. Both teams have a very small amount of roti left. The Rookies scream they’re done and the Vets scream they’re done at the same time. Apparently the victory is given to the Veterans because the Rookies are screaming that they won. Both Robin and Julie are pointed to for still having food in their mouth. Kina shrieks, “We f***ing won!” T.J. says that it is too close to call and he will have to look at the tapes. Mark complains to the guys that Julie was standing there with a mouthful of food. T.J. looks at the tape and Julie still had food in her mouth while celebrating her victory while the Rookies were long done. T.J. gives the news and says there is a fifteen second difference between the Rookies finishing and Julie finishing. So the Rookies are up 249-0 doubloons. Timmy tells us that they went all in, they tried big and they lost. Aneesa says there is no way that they can with this: “Like I’m supposed to sprint against Alton, Landon and M.J.? Sure that makes sense.” She says that as a team they have decided that they are going to walk. The Veterans congratulate a confused Rookie team. Julie says that you can’t play poker when you’re out of chips. Julie interviews that they deserve it. T.J. gives the Rookie team their obtusely large check and that brings up the grand total for the Rookies with $240,000. That’s about $34,285.71 each. The Veterans have to split $60,000 so they get about $8,571.42 each. A graphic shows the final winners as: Landon, M.J., Randy, Ibis, Jodi, Susie, Jamie, Kina, and Alton. For Landon and Jamie, this is their second challenge and second victory. Susie is overwhelmed and overjoyed; she says that she’s just a girl from Pittsburgh and tears up. It’s funny that Susie was one of the two people that I didn’t know to going into the challenge and she became one of my favorites. The other person I didn’t know was Jo, but let’s not get into that… Kina spazzes and screams. She declares herself a rich bitch. Susie hopes that the Rookies are a team that will continue their bond outside of this. Montage: T.J. welcoming them to The Gauntlet 2. Everyone moving into the house. Mark’s birthday party. Aneesa gives Mark a lap dance. Danny is naked. Jodi and Adam L. in the pool. Julie screaming. Katie and Kina crying. Cara arguing. Kina and Randy hugging. Derrick and Brad fighting. Beth beating Ruthie in the Gauntlet. Derrick leaving. Beth giving the gagging sign. Alton says he learned a lot. Timmy says that he is still happy as a clam and is walking away with a lot of memories that is worth more than a trunkful of booty. Kina and Jillian in the Gauntlet. Robin falling out of her shirt. Beth crying. Jo freaking out. And the Rookies with their obtusely large check. Alton: “You know life is a competition. The Gauntlet doesn’t end here.” Chris Jakobi is not sure if he can take on as many crazies as there are on this show, but he is willing to try.
