“We Get Mad at Each Other But Always Have Respect for Each Other” - An Interview with The Amazing Race 9’s Monica and Josephby Jenn Brasler -- 05/12/2006
View Printable version of this article RealityNewsOnline: Hi, Monica and Joseph! Congrats on making it to fourth place. You really raced well. What did you think you brought to the race? Why did you believe you would get picked while you were auditioning? Joseph: I thought we’d get picked just because of her looks; she is beautiful. Monica: I thought just the way we are together. We like to have a good time and we don’t take anything too seriously. They showed more of our personalities towards the end of the race. We get mad at each other but always have respect for each other. RNO: Where did your rivalry with the hippies start? Joseph & Monica: In Oman when Eric and Jeremy let us in on a little secret that the hippies wanted to yield us. We took it personally and we wondered why you would want to talk bad about someone when you were stranded in the desert with no money. RNO: Joseph, why did you get angry with BJ and Tyler instead of Eric when the hippies made you think that Eric was hitting on Monica? Joseph: Because it was blatantly obvious that Eric was not hitting on Monica, and they knew that Eric was kidding but they just wanted to start drama. RNO: If you’d made it to that second yield before Tyler and BJ, who would you have yielded? Joseph & Monica: We lost our yield, but hypothetically if we got there first, we probably would have yielded the last team. RNO: Who did you think would be the team to beat? Joseph & Monica: Eric and Jeremy. RNO: Did you pack anything interesting or unusual? Joseph & Monica: Powerbars and a compass, which really helped us. RNO: If you could have done anything differently, what would it be? Monica: Probably asked more people about the buses. Joseph: I would have had the cab drivers stay at the detour because we couldn’t find a cab when we were done. RNO: Are there any words or actions you regret or wish you could take back? Joseph: I don’t think I’d take anything back. Monica: I think we would try to have a little more fun along the way. Also, I would have not said, “It was the worst thing I’ve ever done” about the fish because it really cut up all my arms, and I was crying not because of the smell but because how hard it was. RNO: Has your relationship changed at all? Joseph & Monica: Yes, definitely for the better. We take things in stride and nothing is really as big of a deal, and we know that we can get through anything. RNO: Is there anything you’d like to say to people? Joseph & Monica: We just hope that everybody understands how hard the race is and it is a lot harder than it seems when you are watching on TV. It is the hardest thing we’ve ever done being, sleep deprived, stressed, etc., but also an AMAZING experience. We also wanted people to know that we had a fun time along the way and we had fun with the teams. RNO: Thanks for the interview! I wish you both luck in the future.
