“This Interview is the Most James Bond Interview We’ve Ever Had!” - An Interview with The Amazing Race 9 Winners BJ & Tyler

by Jenn Brasler -- 05/23/2006
The hippies were probably this season’s most memorable team, and they fought their way to the top, walking away with the million-dollar prize. Read on to find out what they’re doing next, where they wish they could have gone, and what distracts them.

RealityNewsOnline: Hi, BJ & Tyler! Congratulations on your win! Can I interest you in some crickets?

BJ & Tyler: Har, har, har. As long as there’s a million dollars at the bottom of the bowl, we’re there!

RNO: What was your biggest motivation for doing the race?

BJ & Tyler: It’s a race around the world, filled with adventure, with a million dollars waiting at the end. What’s your motivation for not doing the race?

RNO: You didn’t seem to pack much. Did that work out for you, or do you wish you’d packed differently?

BJ & Tyler: We think it worked out pretty well.

RNO: We know you’ve traveled a lot before, but where had you been? Had you visited any of the places you went to on the race, other than Japan?

BJ & Tyler: On Semester at Sea, we traveled to Cuba, Brazil, South Africa, Mauritius, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Japan, and India. We had never been to Oman, Greece, or Australia before the race. BJ had never even been to Europe.

RNO: Is there anything you wish you could have done on the race that you didn’t get to do, or a place you wish you could have visited?

BJ & Tyler: We were hoping that one of the legs would involve travel to the moon. It would be great to compete in a detour without gravity, and to see Phil in a spacesuit.

RNO: How important do you think luck is on the race, as compared to skills and abilities?

BJ & Tyler: Luck never comes into play on the race. Just kidding. Things like getting the right cab driver can make or break a leg.

RNO: When did you first realize that Eric & Jeremy would be a tough team to beat?

BJ & Tyler: When we first saw them going into one of the audition interviews in bathing suits, their ripped torsos glistening with sweat, pool water dripping from their bulging biceps... sorry, what were we talking about? Oh, right, yeah, those frat boys were tough. We might have thought they were getting lucky at first, but by Siracusa we realized that they were in it to win it.

RNO: Do you have any tips for future racers (maybe with regards to begging for money)?

BJ & Tyler: Learn as much as you can about the places you going, and be respectful of local cultures. When begging, try to do it in Australia; the people there are generous, especially during schoolies.

RNO: What was your take on your rivalries with Mojo and Eric & Jeremy?

BJ & Tyler: Our rivalry with Mojo began when we saw them walk over to our car and pretend to leave us money in Oman. It was so pointless. If you’re not going to leave money, fine, but why go over to our car and pretend to? Then, after their complicity in “cabgate,” we decided we would yield them, if it was strategically advantageous. And we did. But then during the Darwin pit stop, we all hung out and had a great Australian BBQ.

RNO: Is there anything you wish you’d done differently?

BJ & Tyler: We wish we said TTOW more.

RNO: What are your future plans?

BJ & Tyler: BJ is the celebrity judge at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum’s 20th Annual Bug Fair Insect Cook-off this weekend, and we are working on The BJ & Tyler Show. Also, this summer we begin shooting a live-action DuckTales movie, with BJ playing Scrooge McDuck and Tyler playing Launchpad McQuack.

RNO: Are you still in touch with any of the other teams? Do you still hold a grudge against any of them?

BJ & Tyler: Yes, we saw all of them in New York City for the finale, and we have been to visit Lake & Michelle in Mississippi, Eric & Jeremy in Florida, Desiree, Dani & Danielle in New York, and the boys up in Boston. We all are going wakeboarding with Monica & Joseph sometime soon. Then skiing with Fran & Barry, and reading Harry Potter with Dave & Lori.

RNO: Is there anything else you want to say to people?

BJ & Tyler: This interview is the most James Bond interview we’ve ever had!

RNO: Thanks, guys! You were tough competitors and definitely earned that first-place finish.
