Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat, Episode 12 - Watch the Birdie!by Stacey Drucker -- 08/09/2006
View Printable version of this article We start this week’s unRealWorld/nonRoadRules Challenge right where we left off – with a teary Diem and Linette having a heart-to-heart talk about how Diem could vote Linette into the Exile despite their friendship. Linette tells Diem she knows it was all Derrick’s fault, so she doesn’t blame Diem, but still thinks Diem "should have said something." Diem agrees that she was wrong. Linette asks that Diem not allow Derrick to put her and Shane first in the order tomorrow and Diem agrees. We then see Derrick interviewing that he would never give Shane & Linette a chance to win a pardon – "that would be the dumbest thing to do!" We hear those lovely T-Mobile tones, and Diem announces the new clue: "You’re just a hop, skip and a jump away from your next challenge." Wes ventures a guess that they’re boxing kangaroos! Theo and Linette cuddle in bed as he tells her there’s nothing to worry about. She interviews that she’s trying not to get emotionally attached, but Theo is making that very hard. And we’re off to today’s challenge! TJ welcomes us back to the Island Quarry in New South Wales, Australia. Today’s challenge is called "Jump Down Under." They have to jump from a 12 meter high board (TJ helpfully explains that this is equivalent to a 4 story building), then swim 20 feet to a huge float (called a "Superlaunch"), climb a rope ladder up and over the float, grab their flag, and swim another 30 feet to the finish. The team that does this fastest will win the challenge, as well as some really ugly sunglasses (that have an MP3 player incorporated in them). TJ helpfully reminds Shane & Linette and Wes & Casey that if either of them win the challenge, they'll escape today’s Exile. Shane & Linette step aside to set the order for today’s challenge. Aviv interviews that she and Linette hope that Diem will prevail upon Derrick not to put Shane & Linette first. If she does, she can make up for what she did. "Don’t blow it!" Aviv tells us, apparently addressing Diem. As Derrick & Diem work on the order, we see that Shane & Linette have "1" next to their names. Diem interviews that Aviv and Linette ganged up on her last night, and this is about strategy, "doing things halfheartedly is no way to win." Apparently, Diem realized she was being manipulated – you go, girl! TJ announces the order and Linette rolls her eyes when her name is called first. She tells us that Diem won’t even look at her, then says "It’s the game." She’ll use her anger to fuel her performance. With that, Shane & Linette jump off the 12 meter high board and swim to the Superlaunch. They have a hard time getting on top of the float, but eventually negotiate it, grab their flags and swim for the finish line. Wes & Casey prepare for their turn. Casey cries with fear as Wes says he’ll push her if he has to! He tries to talk to her and she says "Just don’t push me in!" They aren’t even in their wetsuits yet, so I have no idea how long this drama will last. Casey tells us that on a fear scale of 1-10, this is her 9.7. We finally see them suited up and on the platform, with Wes encouraging Casey to jump. She yells at him and walks back and forth a few times. TJ asks if they’re ready and Casey climbs down from the platform, saying she won’t do it. As she walks away, TJ makes it official, declaring them disqualified. Casey interviews how ridiculous it is to expect anyone to do this. We aren't given Wes's opinion on the situation, which is probably a good thing. Now we see Theo and Chanda on the platform, where Theo interviews that the highest he ever jumped was "I think I did a gainer off Kilimanjaro once, so this is child’s play." Gotta love Theo! TJ counts them down and they jump in without any hesitation, but seem to have trouble climbing up the Superlaunch and getting their flags. Theo interviews that it was like "a swim through one of Dante’s little circles" and everything went wrong for them. As usual, the MTV editors give us no idea how much time they took. Next are Darrell and Aviv, who jump off, with a little hesitation from Darrell. They seem to get their flags off the Superlaunch with less difficulty than the previous teams. Next are Tina & Kenny, and this time it’s Tina who hesitates before she jumps, but after a few seconds, she does it. They look to be cooperating very well, and Wes observes "Wow, they’ve been working together really well ever since that Exile." Tina and Kenny finish to applause, and Kenny says they think they’re in first place. Derrick & Diem are the last to go and they move through the course with no hesitation. It looks like the managed the Superlaunch with no difficulty at all. TJ announces the standings. Wes & Casey are, of course, disqualified. The other teams are as follows: 5. Shane & Linette 8:30 Tina flips off the winners as they step forward and collect their really unattractive sunglasses, and Kenny interviews that they’re happy to have scored their first second place finish. Derrick interviews that winning two challenges in a row sets the tone for the rest of the game and he thinks the timing couldn’t have been better for them. Meanwhile, Wes & Casey and Shane & Linette have 10 minutes to say goodbye to their friends. Casey interviews that she’s pretty confident that she’ll be back from Exile "Just call us Team Exile!" she says, as I look around to see if the Foreshadowing Fairies are making their presence known. Linette tells us there’s no way she’s being sent home by Casey, who wouldn’t even jump off the platform. Diem tells us that if Shane & Linette come back, she and Derrick are "screwed." 1 2 Next-->View Printable version of this article |
