Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat, Episode 13 – Into the Blue

by Stacey Drucker -- 08/17/2006
With Shane & Linette gone, the teams realize that no one is safe. If they can handle the pressure on land, can they handle it beneath 30 feet of water?

We begin tonight’s unRealWorld/nonRoadRules Challenge at the Cheeky Monkey, where Diem and Derrick are, shall we say, bonding. Diem interviews that she thinks no one will want to get involved with her because of her cancer. Derrick is quickly proving her wrong.

We hear those lovely T-Mobile tones, and Tina announces the clue: "Now is your chance to go down under. Meet me at 5:00 a.m."

Theo interviews that with only 5 teams remaining; things are beginning to get tense. He says that he, Darrell, and Derrick "have each other’s backs." I wonder how long that can last, given the shrinking number of options they have.

The next morning we meet TJ at The Spirit of the Gold Coast for today’s challenge. Today, the teams will be taking on "Deep Blue." They’ll travel 4 nautical miles into the ocean by boat, where each team will step onto a free-diving sled, which will quickly drop them 30 feet below the ocean surface. The team must grab their flag at the bottom and stay underwater as long as they can. The team with the longest time underwater wins the challenge and gets to send a team into Exile. Derrick & Diem won last time, so they get to determine the order for this challenge.

They put their heads together and do some scribbling. Finally TJ announces the order: Tina & Kenny are first (Tina curses when her name is called), then it will be Darrell & Aviv, Theo & Chanda, Wes & Casey, and Derrick & Diem get to go last.

As they head out to sea, Wes tells Casey that if she passes out and they get disqualified, he will still respect her. He interviews that this is the first challenge Casey hasn’t been scared of, and he thinks it’s the most dangerous challenge yet.

Tina & Kenny take their places on the sled as we hear Kenny interview that this is one of the hardest things he has ever done. TJ blows his trademark air horn and the kiddies disappear underwater. They both resurface almost immediately, saying their ears and lungs hurt terribly.

As Darrell & Aviv prepare, he tells us that he’s excited for this challenge – he would like to see a lionfish, even though they’re deadly. Without too much time to contemplate that, TJ blows his horn and the kiddies quickly submerge. They manage to ride the sled to the bottom, but Darrell heads back to the surface almost immediately. Aviv grabs the flag and follows him, surfacing a few seconds later.

Next are Theo & Chanda. Chanda says she wants to meditate to calm herself, so she can hold her breath longer. She knows they must win this. "If that means drowning myself for a few minutes, then so be it." TJ’s horn blows and away they go. They ride the sled to the bottom and grab their flag, then float very slowly to the surface. They remain just under the surface, where the water pressure is much lower, until they run out of air and surface.

Wes & Casey are up next. Wes asks Casey if she’s ready and she immediately pulls the lever to release the sled! He interviews that she never gave a 3-2-1 or any sort of indication before the pulled. Even so, he manages to ride the sled to the bottom, grab the flag and follow her to the surface. She keeps her head below the surface for a bit (no way to tell how long), and then surfaces completely. Casey interviews that she did what she could, she’s glad she wasn’t disqualified, but she wishes she could have been a bit calmer.

Last to go are Derrick & Diem. He has been taking some deep breaths, and he feels ready. The horn blows and they ride the sled down. Derrick grabs the flag and heads for the surface, with Diem following. They float just below the surface for awhile, and Wes, looking at his watch, says their time was "about as close as you can get."

TJ congratulates the kiddies on completing one of the toughest MTV challenges ever. And the results are:

Tina & Kenny :13
Wes & Casey :23
Darrell & Aviv :27
Theo & Chanda :54
Derrick & Diem :55

As the winners, Derrick & Diem must choose the first team to go to Exile. They leave to discuss the decision but it seems that they can’t agree. TJ has to force them to return to the group and make their announcement. Derrick turns his back to everyone and refuses to speak. TJ repeatedly requests their decision, until Diem finally speaks up, saying they have chosen to send Theo & Chanda to Exile. Theo interviews that he’s shocked that Derrick would turn on him like this.

TJ gives the remaining 3 teams a 20 minute meeting to vote the second team into Exile. Tina & Kenny and Wes & Casey agree very quickly, voting Darrell & Aviv into Exile.

Strategy has finally taken hold, with the weaker teams sending the stronger teams into Exile. It only took 12 episodes! Tina tells us that the 3 "supposedly weak" teams could be left in the game, making it more likely that one of them will win the $250,000. Darrell tells us he’s furious that Derrick turned on him, "You’re [bleep]ing with my money, man!"

Lurking in the bushes (yes, really!), Derrick strikes a deal with Wes, since he feels he can’t trust anyone else (he's right - stabbing people in the back generally makes them untrustworthy). Wes tells us he has been maneuvering to get the strong teams out all along, with no success. "Until today!" he declares, with a big grin.

Once again, we see Derrick & Diem at the Cheeky Monkey. It seems they're outside and Derrick looks as drunk as is humanly possible while still standing. He and Diem kiss (as he struggles to remain upright) and he tells her he has no idea what she sees in him. We leave them sitting on the curb, kissing and holding hands. He interviews that the money would help her the most and could possibly save her life, so that’s all he’s here for right now.

Next time on RWRRC: Fresh Meat: Derrick is wracked with guilt about sending his friends into the Exile. Darrell declares that all Derrick has done is fuel his fire to stay.
