American Idol 4, March 24: Super-Size Meby Sting7 -- 03/25/2005
Ryan welcomes us, ominously telling us it has already been a controversial week, and things are "only going to get more dramatic." He adds everyone is on edge tonight. Intro the judges. Recap Tuesday night performances (with a bit of Wednesday’s amplified critiques thrown in). Then, a recap of Wednesday’s recap show. Ryan says a new record was broken, with 31.5 million votes cast. That’s what Ryan said, do not email me. The eleven remaining contestants perform the second of three songs which we will vote on to be released as a single to benefit The American Red Cross, "He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother." Another nicely done song, especially as they got into the chorus. Ryan begins looking for the bottom three highest vote getters. You may recall, on Tuesday, I predicted Jessica, Anthony, and Mikalah would be under the hot spotlight, and Mikalah will be "lead back" to the airport. Let's see how it shakes out! Nikko - is safe Constantine - is safe Carrie - is safe Bo - is safe Nadia - is in the bottom three! (Oh no!!!!) Jessica - is safe! Mikalah - is in the bottom three! Scott - is safe! Anwar, Vonzell, and Anthony get their critiques recapped at the same time. One of them is bottom three, with Nadia and Mikalah. That person is... Anthony Fedorov! He is in the bottom three. (I am shocked Nadia is bottom three! It was her worst performance to date, but I thought her fan base would keep her safe! The question is, did Mikalah rally her fan base enough to get off hook tonight?) Ryan asked Randy if he could save one of the contestants, who would it be? (While Randy ponders, you can hear Paula mumble "Nadia.”) Randy says it’s a toughie, but he’d say Nadia. Ryan asks Paula, and Paula then says she loves them all. Chicken. Someone is heading back to the couch. It is Anthony! Oh please, please, let it be Mikalah going home! Ryan again asks Nadia if she has any regrets, especially now that she is in the bottom three. Nadia says she still has none, she just "did me." Without any fanfare, Ryan doesn't even bother giving a dramatic pause to say Mikalah is leaving us. Whew! Jessica and Carrie are teary-eyed, but Mikalah takes it pretty well. We get Mikalah’s video, as if she died, and Ryan says she brought something unique to the show, what will she miss. Mikalah says she will miss her fellow contestants, her fans, and promises this is just the beginning. Mikalah then sings a much superior rendition of "Love Will Lead You Back." It’s just amazing what happens when the pressure is off. Good luck, Mikalah. American Idol gave me a scare this week! If Nadia was sent home, I think there would be people with torches outside the studio before the credits finished rolling! On Tuesday, let’s do it again! I’ll be here, you be there, and we’ll get ‘er done together! Sting7 has been a respected published writer for 16 years, as a music editor, entertainment critic, columnist, and interviewer.
