America's Next Top Model 4, Episode 7: Words Can’t Describe This One!

by Phil Kural -- 04/14/2005
In what will probably go down as the most shocking episode in America’s Next Top Model history, the girls learn some acting skills, have a sexy photo shoot, and a fun challenge at elimination. Then why so shocking? Tyra flips out, and it’s not pretty. Find out why – right here!

Previously, with her skin clearing up, Michelle was slowly regaining her confidence. However, Tiffany was losing hers. Brittany went over the top at a party, while Lluvy and Rebecca struggled with finding sexiness in themselves. Lluvy was sent home though after her third time standing in front of the judges. Seven girls are left. Who is going home tonight? All that and more, right now!

We begin this week on what looks like the same night the eliminations occurred. Kahlen and Rebecca are talking. Rebecca says her room is emptying out, and that she really likes Lluvy, who apparently left her a note. Rebecca was terrified and knows she looks too innocent in her shots. She misses her fiancé though. Kahlen tells her that the judges know her confidence is lacking, so she needs to work on it.

The girls go to dinner at Dolce, which is apparently a restaurant owned by Ashton Kutcher. Tiffany says that all this eating out is so much different that what she knows. She asks Keenyah what some things are, and says she isn’t used to eating raw things. I hear you, girlfriend, I’m the same way! She tells the camera that she just jokes it off, but it’s clear that she’s a fish out of water. We see her ask Kahlen where her juice is at the bottom of her cappuccino. Priceless!

Tyra mail says that the girls can walk the walk, now they have to learn how to talk the talk. We see the girls arrive at a player’s theater, and sit down in the studio. Everyone is nervous, as they meet Larry Moss, their acting coach. He tells them that as models, they might be called on to be a spokesperson for a company, so they have to work on their speech and image. Rebecca can see the correlation. Tiffany says they are there to learn Cockney English, and she can barely speak regular English. Why would they be called on to be a spokesperson and have to speak in Cockney English? What are they going to be a spokesperson for? The Quaker Oats guy? Brittany says it’s nothing but Chitty Chitty Bang Bang talk. I’m really staring to love Brittany again.

Each of the girls has to mimic a phrase that Larry teaches them. Rebecca is nervous, but Michelle is excited, since she has taken four years of drama training. Everyone gives it a go, and Tiffany is told that her accent is very southern, which will be a big handicap. Larry gives them a script and tells them to learn to be the character. Tomorrow they will be tested. Tiffany considers this an all-day challenge for her. Aww, why is Tiffany so down on herself this episode? I love her too much!

The girls get home and practice. Tiffany has no idea what Cockney English has to do with anything, and wins for best line of the night with “Girl, what is you talkin’ bout with all this?” She’s very confused, but wants to do her best. She calls her grandmom, and we get a flashback of how her grandmom let her lights get shut off to buy her a swimsuit the last time she auditioned. Tiffany tells her about how she’s struggling with speech, but granny gives her advice and tells her to hold strong.

The next morning, the girls are still practicing. Rebecca knows she isn’t doing a good job with the material. Michelle is confident that she might win this challenge. They arrive and are greeted by Larry. He tells them that they won’t be working with him, and in comes Boris Kodjoe, who is apparently in Soul Food. I never heard of him, but I don’t watch much TV, other than the shows I cover for RNO, The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives. All the girls are drooling, especially Tiffany. The girls now have ten minutes to get their makeup together and do their costumes. As they are putting on their rags, everyone is still practicing. Kahlen thinks she’s going to make a fool of herself.

Brittany is the first girl to go, but we get a few glimpses of everyone. It’s not pretty. Tatiana messes up all over the place, and Kahlen needs a lot of *bleeps.* Naima says she is always trying to do her best, while Michelle felt confident and thinks she might win. She felt great. Tiffany is the last girl to go, and it’s VERY bad. She even admits that she looked at Boris and they both laughed. She just laughs it off though, and now it’s time for the results. The girls come walking in, and Brittany is told by Boris that he loved her accent. Tatiana had issues with her lines and Kahlen needed someone to censor her. Christina skipped pages in her script, and Michelle lacked eye contact. Rebecca needed more passion, while Naima was very good, and so was Keenyah. Then Boris tells Tiffany that he likes her hat! Ha! The winner of the challenge will get to split $10,000 in diamonds with two friends, and our winner is… Naima! Michelle looks pretty dejected, but then Naima picks her, and all is fine. Tatiana is also picked. Tiffany isn’t very happy at this point.

All the girls sit around and talk. Keenyah says that some of the girls call Cockney English “ghetto English.” Tiffany says that many intelligent people live in the ghetto, like her mom and grandmom. Keenyah says that people don’t understand it sometimes. Tiffany tells the camera she is sick of changing, and is unhappy. Maybe being a model isn’t who she is. Oh no, yes it is, Tiffany! The girls head out for their reward, and are brought to the basement of a bank. They walk into the vault and look at diamonds. Naima gets a necklace with a yellow diamond, since it’s unique like her. Michelle and Tatiana get rings – not too shabby!

At home, Rebecca calls her fiancé on the phone. She says it’s a struggle being there, and he’s very comforting to her. Tyra mail tells the girls that the feathers are going to fly in the morning. Rebecca knows that she needs to nail the shoot or she will be the one that is going home. We see the girls head to the shoot. Tatiana thinks they will be jumping off something. Jay welcomes the girls to the Hollywood hills, where they have an amazing view. He informs them all that their sexual frustration will come out in this shoot. Also, they will be working with someone. In comes Rib. Rib? Who the heck names their kid Rib? Maybe it’s because you can see all of his? This guy needs to eat a cheesesteak. And he’s a supermodel? Kahlen says she is still in fifth grade mode, and gets all flush around hot guys. Oh honey, move on! Rib is wearing boxer briefs, and the girls will be wearing Wonder Bras, and will be in a pillow fight, and are all told that it has to look believable.

Rebecca is very nervous saying that it’s awkward since she’s getting married when she goes home. In comes Brittany, who is first. We all know she’ll have no problem with this shoot, and she just doesn’t want to show too much sex appeal. The feathers fly and Brittany is in her element. Jay says that as a top model, you have to learn to control all the elements, and Brittany does just that. Tatiana was uninhibited, but Jay says she wasn’t aware of the bra. Keenyah does her thing as usual, but the photographer says she found no connection. Kahlen is nervous and unconfident, but doesn’t want her lack of confidence to be the reason she goes home. She is up next and Rib says that it was clear she was uncomfortable. Tiffany tells the camera she just wants to make it believable, but then says she feels silly and can’t get into character. Jay feels that she didn’t let go. Christina doesn’t do a bad job, while Naima says that she was choking on the feathers. Rebecca steps up, and says that she wants to let loose, but the shoot is full of emotion. Everyone feels she should have been more aggressive. Michelle is last, and being a wrestler worked to her advantage. Rib says that if they were wrestling, she would have won, and with that, the shoot is over!

The girls get home and Tyra mail is waiting for them. Tomorrow, one of them will go home and eight will move on. Everyone is nervous as we fast forward to the next morning, with all the girls grumbling about elimination later. Rebecca says she never walks away from a shoot totally confident, and she could be going home. Kahlen wasn’t confident and feels it might be her. Tiffany is scared and says she’s scared that she won’t win since she’s form the ghetto. I don’t like this Tiffany without the confidence. Keenyah gives her some words of encouragement, but I’m not sure how well it worked.

The girls walk into the elimination ceremony. Tyra says it’s time for the sixth cut. The prizes are told to the girls – AGAIN. The judges are introduced – AGAIN. Our special guest judge this week is Boris Kodjoe. The girls’ challenge this week is the following: They must act like TV correspondents for ANTM TV. They must use the acting skills they learned and instead of having a script, each girl will read from a teleprompter. Each girl will be talking about fashion week in Paris. This should be good!

Brittany goes first, and she is her crazy self. I would love to sit here and tell you who messed up when, but every girl messed up with this thing. They didn’t even know how to say some of the high-profile designers’ names. This part had me cracking up. Kahlen looks like she was going to throw up. In comes Tiffany. She starts to read, and then stops, and says she can’t do it. Tyra tells her the other girls messed up too, and if she doesn’t do it, she is going home. Tiffany starts to tear up, but reads it again. Tyra tells her to have fun, and when she is done, the judges clap. Tiffany walks out saying that she is so humiliated, and it gets worse every week.

Time for individual evaluations. Michelle is first, and although she was bad at the reading, they like her shot, and Nole’ even tells her to “work it out.” I think that’s good! Brittany goes next and they think she was nuts, but fun. They love her photo too, and Tyra says it was sexy, and didn’t say “Ho.” Don’t you hate when the picture says “Ho?” Rebecca is told she was boring as a host, and her shot was bad since she doesn’t look like she is in the light. Keenyah needs to study her fashion dictionary, and although her breasts look good in the photo, her face is missing. Kahlen took things way too seriously as a host, and her shot isn’t very good at all. Then it’s revealed that she never had a boyfriend. Did the judges really need to know that?

Tiffany goes next and Tyra says she fell apart. She asks her about being humiliated, and Tiffany says that she just feels like she is always making a fool of herself. Janice tells her to ditch the attitude. Tyra says that she can’t sit there and threaten her all the time. They look at her shot and say she looks uncomfortable. Naima overacted as a host, and Tyra says she didn’t try hard enough on her shot. Christina sounded and looked like she was on public access, and her shot looked energetic. Tatiana lacked the confidence as a host and in her shot, with the light not on her face. Janice shows them how to catch the light, by jumping on top of Nigel. Oh dear God, this is a family show here!

Time for the judges to deliberate. They feel that Brittany has tamed herself and is looking sexy. Some feel that Tatiana is not a woman, and needs more confidence. Naima was good, but can do better, while Keenyah always looks the same and needs more personality. Kahlen is stiff and boring this week, while Rebecca is like a bowl of pasta – very plain. Everyone feels like Tiffany could be a couture model, but she has to ditch the attitude. Tyra thinks that Tiffany is just intimidated. Tyra also says that something about Michelle is wrong, but for some reason when she comes together, she’s almost right. Christina has a “makeup face(?)” and Janice remarks that she has no upper lip. I really like Christina! In general, Tyra feels the shots were bad this week, and Nigel says that the judges have to do something to give them a wake up call.

The girls walk back in. Tyra says it was a very interesting week. The judges are less impressed, and as a whole, it wasn’t a good shoot. The judges don’t want perfection, just promise, and they were very disappointed tonight. However, one girl with her photo and personality really stood out, and that’s the girl that has to be watched. Brittany is called up. Tyra gives her a photo, and congratulates her, tell her how proud she is. Good for you, Brittany! Keenyah is called next, followed by Naima and Michelle. Kahlen is called next, and yes, I’m shocked too! Next is Christina, and then Tatiana.

Tiffany and Rebecca step up. Tyra says that they are there for very different reasons. Rebecca has probably the best body of all the girls there, and wants to be a top model in the worst way. She tries very hard, but the judges feel she is just safe. Tiffany is told that almost everyone wants it more than she does – even her family, but especially her grandmom. Tyra says that Tiffany acts like she’s not worth all this, and if she doesn’t, the judges won’t either. Maybe Tiffany needs more time to look in the mirror and find that self confidence that she is lacking. The judges had a tough decision this week, says Tyra, as she pulls out the last photo – WHICH IS BLANK! She says that both girls are going home this week!

The other girls have a look of shock on their face, as Rebecca breaks down right away into Kahlen. Tiffany is very ho-hum about the whole thing, and is laughing it off. As they go walking out, Tyra asks them to stand in front of her again. She tells Rebecca that she respects her emotion right now and it shows that she really wanted it. However, Tyra is disappointed in Tiffany because of how nonchalant she is acting. Then she proceeds to start yelling at Tiffany. Tiff says that she’s hurt, but what can she do now? Hmm, that’s true! Tyra tells her to take control, and that America was rooting for her. That’s true, too! I was! Tyra tells her that she has a bad attitude, and she understands that she has been though things, but so has Tyra, and Tiff has no idea about that either. She continues to tell Tiffany that she’s not a victim, and learn to grow. As she continues to wail, Tyra says that when her mom used to yell this loudly at her, it was because she loved her. With that, the two girls head out. I’ve never seen Tyra so irate. It was like a porcupine – the angrier she got, the more all that hair on her head stood up!

As the girls pack their bags, Rebecca says she has never seen Tyra like that, and maybe she was right about Tiffany – maybe she is bitter. Tiffany says that her grandmom and child kept her there. Rebecca is disappointed, but everyone can’t say that they’ve done this. She knows more about herself now, and her family is number one. She’s going home to get married! Tiffany says she regrets being disrespectful, and Tyra really did care about her, and she respects Tyra so much. She knows that she cared, and she can’t wait to go home and have a good life. Aww, I really did like Tiffany – way more than I ever thought I would!

Next week, the girls react to the shockwaves that went on during the elimination ceremony. Each of the girls gets a taste of the spotlight, but a celebrity guest judge brings a loss of words to most of the girls. Also, it looks like Kahlen has a personal tragedy that might take her out of the competition. I sure hope not. I’ll be back next week. I’m still in shock of Tyra’s outburst! Oh yeah, here’s how I rank the girls right now:

  1. Naima
  2. Brittany
  3. Keenyah
  4. Tatiana
  5. Kahlen
  6. Michelle
  7. Christina (Damn it, I really like her!)
