Big Brother 2 Features Its Own 'Archie Bunker'

by Brigitte Taulbee -- 07/10/2002
There has only been one episode of Big Brother 2, but already it seems like time to hire a plane and print a banner to get rid of Kent -- this season's Archie Bunker.

It took me at least five episodes of the first Big Brother to really start to detest one of the house guests, but I feel totally different with Big Brother 2. While viewing the premiere episode I was appalled to hear Kent’s views regarding sexual preferences and body @{piercing}@. Give me a break! He stated that ninety percent of America does not accept alternative lifestyles and went on to voice his disdain for the fact that it is no longer appropriate to use slang terms regarding people that practice those lifestyles.

After hearing his comments I immediately went to the Big Brother 2 web site to see if perhaps I had missed something in his profile, but my memory was correct. His profile did not mention that he was a pollster who went from house to house asking “America” what they thought of alternative lifestyles, nor did it mention that he went to sleep in 1970 and woke up in the year 2001. Hello! Where has this person been? Not only is it becoming more acceptable to practice alternative lifestyles, but tattoos and body piercing have even became popular in corporate America. I suspect that many CEOs are sporting nipple rings under their suits.

This person obviously came to the show with an agenda to get his views voiced. He reminds me of Will in the earlier show, and I hope he receives the same treatment Will did and goes out the door. I have now heard his thoughts regarding Princess Diana and Mother Theresa several times. It was broadcast in the first episode and he voiced the same opinion tonight in the web cast. He is amazed by the fact that we mourned Diana for days and barely, in his opinion, gave Mother Theresa a passing thought. He fails to mention that part of the shock regarding the Princess was her young age as well as the brutal manner of her death. I’m appalled to think that someone can see a mother taken away from two young children and not be touched.

He has now added Michael Jordan to his speech. He went on and on regarding why kids shouldn’t regard Mr. Jordan is a hero. Has he taken a look at the state of our young people lately? He should just be thrilled that they have heroes and role models. Better to worship Michael Jordan than sit in their rooms and plan to blow up their school.

Bottom line is that Kent is dead wrong as far as I am concerned. I have two beautiful children and all I desire is their happiness. I will not tolerate them having views similar to Kent’s and I do not want them to see those thoughts voiced on TV. We need to teach our children love and acceptance. Matthew Shepard, the 21 year old youth killed in Wyoming because he was gay, may well be alive today if every parent set an accepting example to their children.

I can’t fathom what Big Brother was thinking when they placed him on the show, but I do know one thing. He should try out for the next cast call of All in the Family. Kent has made the house guests of the last show look a lot better to me. I would much rather watch Brittney chase Josh around than listen to this man’s-narrow minded views. Heck, he even makes me long for George.
