Big Brother 2, Episode 5: Sucking Up Works!

by David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
We have a new Head of Household, a new food competition, and a second round of eviction nominations. Even though most people wanted Will and Shannon gone, it looks like sucking up really does work. Oh, and we finally are shown something of the Mike/Autumn seduction saga.

We picked up on Saturday where we left off on Thursday, with Nicole celebrating her continued stay in the house and the Brat Pack realizing that they are in deep trouble. As Will said, he, Mike, and Shannon are the three most hated people in the house. Yup. And with good reason. To top it all off, Mike felt guilty about getting Sheryl booted. Well, Mike, that’s what happens when you play with other people as if they were toys.

This was a jam-packed episode, necessitated by the fact that we weren’t told who was chosen as next Head of Household (HH) on Thursday because of the time taken to explain Justin getting the boot. But anybody who was watching the Web cams or who reads this site regularly already knew that Krista won HH, and how she got it. Then there was a food competition, which involved each person writing down his/her estimated weight. Actual weights were taken and a comparison of boys against the girls was done to see who was closest. The guys won by one pound – PB&J for the women for the next week (except Krista, who gets her own fully-stocked fridge as HH). And then we also had nominations.

Before we got into the nominations, we were shown some of the events leading up to them. We were finally told about the whole Autumn/Mike seduction thing – where Mike tried to screw Autumn so she’d side with the Brat Pack against Nicole. And we see Krista taking suggestions from everybody on who she should nominate.

Everybody except the Brat Pack said Will should definitely be one. Most of them suggested Shannon as the other. But Nicole, at least, seemed to look into Krista’s head and realized she wasn’t going to go that way (I suspected as much, as I noted in the article about Krista getting HH). She is, as Kent would later say, trying to play both sides against the middle.

As far as the Brat Pack themselves were concerned, they were sucking up all over the place. Will apologized to Nicole. Shannon apologized to Hardy. Etc. But Nicole still said, in the Diary Room, that there is nothing the Brat Pack could do to make things right. Well, the live feed info suggested Nicole was being friendly towards them and actually considering allying with them, but who knows what goes on minute by minute in any of their minds. We’ll wait and see how this develops, but I sure hope Nicole doesn’t decide to switch sides. I’d have to trash her mercilessly here.

Anyway, we got down to the nominations, and Krista did indeed decide to leave the Brat Pack alive. She nominated Autumn and Kent. She claimed to pick Autumn because Autumn has been getting too emotional and she’s losing a good part of herself. For Kent, she claims to have just randomly picked. Neither seemed angry – Autumn said that Krista was right, but she’s still ready to fight to survive, and Kent said everybody will be in that position at some point, though he doesn’t believe it was, in fact, random.

So there we have it. While Kent was an early favorite to be removed quickly, but he’s since grown on the viewers and – more importantly – the other contestants. Autumn, however, has continued to be viewed as the “neediest” player, and I think that people are really getting sick of her. If it had been Autumn vs. Will, she might have had a chance. But since they are two players from the same faction, Autumn will end up leaving.
