Big Brother 2, Episode 6: Personality Parade

by David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
There isn't a whole lot of action on Tuesdays, so we get to see more of the personality issues. How does Shannon's self-image compare to what the others think? What is Nicole up to with the Brat Pack? Should Kent concede to Autumn?

On Thursdays, Big Brother 2 features a live show including the eviction of one player and the appointing of another as Head of Household (HoH). On Saturdays, we find out who the HoH has nominated for the next eviction vote and see the food contest. On Tuesdays, well, not a whole lot happens. This allows them to focus on personality issues and conflicts within the house.

This Tuesday’s episode was a perfect example of this. Sure, there was a birthday dinner for Krista and Mike, and a luxury competition involving mechanical bull riding, but even those showed some of the personalities involved. For example, Bunky didn’t want to be the only guy to be thrown in the first round because it would be too stereotypical – alas, he was. Will was his standard self (an ass, in other words) and brought out the peanut butter the girls have been forced to eat as if to rub it in their faces before his second-round ride (the prize was a Texas BBQ – food other than PB&J for the women); then he was immediately thrown off the bull (but he landed on his head, so there was no damage done); then, to top it off, he said he would be mad if the women rubbed their prize in his face. Totally clueless.

So what else did we learn? Bunky is considering voting for Kent to leave just so it’s not unanimous against Autumn. Nicole is considering voting for Kent to leave just so it’s not unanimous against Autumn. The Brat Pack may be trying to convince people that they are going to vote for Autumn just so one will vote for Kent to leave and they can get him out. Kent thinks this is exactly what will happen. Hmm. The intrigue of it all. I’d almost think the producers were setting us up – except that they don’t know what will happen either.

Meanwhile, Will has been sucking up to Nicole (well, sort of) and, as I predicted, talking in the Diary Room about how he has no choice but to do so because she’s in control. He said he respects her for being honest about not liking him. He still thinks she’s a bitch, mind you, but she’s not “the lowest of the low.” Nicole responded, “I can be a bitch to people who deserve to have somebody be a bitch to them.” Ouch. But meanwhile, she is also trying to infiltrate the Brat Pack by saying she’ll vote along with them if they guarantee her safety. Are they dumb enough to fall for it? Or, should I say, are they conceited enough to believe they could bring her over? I think the answer to both questions is “yes,” but time will tell. Maybe between the three of ‘em (Mike, Shannon, Will), they do have a clue. Maybe not.

Several of the players were, in a sense, profiled. Shannon did not come off well (but then, how could she?). Even Mike called her an ice princess. Even Will said she could be preparing to stab him in the back. She said she likes people who aren’t mean; then they show her, Mike, and Will making nasty comments about Autumn. She said she’s not conceited and self-centered; then they show the others giving examples of just how conceited and self-centered she is. She is shown crying; the others talk about her crocodile tears. Shannon, you ain’t foolin’ nobody.

In another show of contrasts, Nicole was shown speaking early on how she would never get in the pool or the hot tub. Then she was shown getting into both. Why? Because she wanted to show that she’s not afraid of anything anymore. Indeed, she may have gone from the weakest position to the strongest in only a week or two. It will be interesting to see if it stays that way. Oh, and she’s also quite a clean freak.

Monica is shown to also be quite a strong person, and one who has bonded well with pretty much everybody. She supports the others, tells them what she thinks, shows how she is keeping it real, etc. But this could make her a threat, so she’d better watch her back whenever the Brat Pack is around.

Getting back to the Kent vs. Autumn vote on Thursday, Autumn suggested that Kent should concede. Yeah, right. Give me a break. As usual, she thinks everything should revolve around her. As usual, even the people who are on her side consider her ultra-needy. Kent will not concede, but, as mentioned earlier, he does think he is on the way out. He figures the Brat Pack will take this opportunity to get him out the door and keep the weaker opponent around. Indeed, Mike confided that he is happy to see Kent upset. As per the Brat Pack’s usual mode of “thought,” Mike thinks Kent should be thankful that he wasn’t put up against Sheryl in the first vote, because he’d have lost. So he should apparently owe something to Mike. Mike said Kent messed with them, so now he may have to be sent home. Give me a break and get over your bad self..

For his part, Kent is tired of the BS. I don’t blame him. I’m not even there and I’m tired of it. I just hope the next HoH isn’t from the Brat Pack, so maybe we can get rid of one of them. Until then, though, let’s hope Autumn is the next to go. Because if it’s Kent, the Brat Pack will be back with a vengeance and even more inflated ego. I’m not sure the world can handle that.
