Big Brother 2, Episode 13: Unlucky for Some

by Susan Schechter -- 07/10/2002

Without worrying about Ouija boards, 13 was an ominous number for at least one houseguest tonight. And, with a new Head of Household, it could become very unlucky indeed for several others.

I must confess, I had been looking forward to tonight's episode all day. Even at work I found myself wondering who would be evicted. And CBS tried to do a good job keeping us in suspense for the first half of the show.

Thursday nights are eviction nights, when the show is live and Julie Chen hosts. Chen was in fine form tonight. The show opens with the nominees, Mike and Krista, being set up with personal vignettes, and a lot of air time. The egos are played up; Both Mike and Krista feel that Kent stung them by nominating them. Neither one feels Kent should have done so, Mike is especially full of hate because as he has said before, Kent "owed" him because he did not nominate him when Mike became the first HoH. Get over yourself, Mike! You nominated Nicole because, at the time, you thought it was the right thing to do. And nothing and no one will convince me otherwise. I do not believe that you nominated Sheryl because she was the most liked. You nominated her because she was more popular than you, thus a threat to you. If it had come down to the ending with you and Sheryl, you know Sheryl would have won. Personally, I felt once you dropped the Eminem wannabe act, you are a lot smarter than you let people give you credit for. You seem to be one of those people who keep their friends close, but their enemies closer. After all, you live in La La Land, and that is one of the mantras of those who live there.

And as last week's show portrayed Shannon in an unfavorable light, so too was Mike portrayed. He said, "I'll say whatever I want to say." And proceeded to tear into Kent.

Mike isn't the only one tearing into someone. All the houseguests except Bunky seem to be turning on each other. It reminds me of a psychology experiment in Psych 101: put too many rats in a cage and they will turn on each other. Mike is turning on Kent. Hardy is turning on Kent. Monica, yes sweet Monica, turned on the neat freak Nicole. Hardy decides to make an alliance of sorts with Will, and says its like "making a deal with the devil."

Kent says, "they don't particularly like me in this house, and I don't blame them." Kent's definitely gone from a zero to a hero in my book. He says he misses his family and hopes his daughters do not grow up to be the type of people in the house at present. I hope he meant to exclude himself in that statement. (Freudian Slip number one). Cut to Hardy in Diary Room, misquoting Shakespeare - "evil web we weave." Last time I read it, it was, "Oh what a tangled web we weave…" That's okay, Hardy, you then say to the BB camera, "this is the only time I can think of when winning means losing."

We then are treated to some lovely vignettes, such as a picture of Krista's home in Louisiana. The viewer sees the restaurant where she is employed, and hears some quotes from her boss and her best friend, all saying what a nice girl she is. Segue to Mike's restaurant in L.A., which is like night and day. The Louisiana restaurant had down home style cooking, and waitresses who probably love to talk to the customers. Mike's restaurant is, of course, a bar, and his friends and business partner all say what a great guy Mike is, he just made some dumb mistakes in the beginning. You can say that again! The segment ends with Will in the Diary Room, voting against Krista. No surprise here. Mike is his best friend, and Will's loyalty to Mike is as absolute as Rudy's was to Richard in Survivor 1.

Chen opens the next segment by saying that, according to the Internet, Hardy is the most liked guest and Will is the most disliked. This the most perfect segue to the strange alliance of Hardy and Will. Say it ain't so! But it is. Hardy and Will have an alliance of sorts. You see both of them in the Diary Room, Hardy saying he has values and principles that he knows Will does not have, but Will then states they both respect their differences. Bunky says it is strange to see Will and Hardy becoming friends. Will thinks it is because both he and Hardy are pretty boys. Hardy says if he has to stay, he will keep Will around because Will is the only person Hardy can "enjoy."

Kent's last few hours of HoH include the interview with Julie in the HoH room. One of the things the viewers learned is that, according to Kent, he nominated Krista only because she nominated him. That makes sense to me. Poor Kent. It's been a difficult week for him.

Now the eviction. So far the only votes we have seen is Will's unsurprising vote for Krista, and Bunky's unsurprising vote for Mike. When it's finally revealed, it's four to one to evict Mike.

OK, so it's no big surprise, but Krista cries and gets weepy as Mike hands her a rock and the candle from his birthday cake he shared with Krista. He then leaves to interview with Julie in the studio.

Mike shows no surprise when he is shown the videos of the votes. He says he was evicted for two reasons, for creating Chill Town and, as he tells Julie, "I had told everyone to vote for Krista." Second Freudian Slip of the night. He should have said, "vote for me to keep Krista in." Ah well, we know what he meant. He also told Julie words to the effect that when this show is completely over, he wants Krista and her daughter to move to L.A. And again, no surprise, he says the reason he was booted is because of Justin and Sheryl's leaving. Yes, I'm sure it had nothing to do with your personality.

This week's HoH competition is a good one.

Each of the houseguests except Kent is given a cube. One four sides of the cube is a picture of one of the booted houseguests: Sheryl, Autumn, Shannon, and Mike. The remaining sides hold a picture of Kent (because he's HoH, not because the producers are suggesting he's next), and a blank side. Julie then asks questions to the houseguests, and they face the cube with a picture towards the camera as an answer.

  • Who is currently married.? (Kent. All get it correct.)
  • Which guest lives the closest to the BB house? (Mike, who lives in L.A., where the BB house is located. All get it correct.)
  • Who was the youngest guest? (Autumn. All get it correct again.)
  • Who has the oldest child? (Sheryl, her son is 17. All get that correct yet again.)
  • Which houseguest has been married only once? (The answer is a blank because it doesn't apply to any of them. Bunky, Will , Monica, and Krista all get that one wrong. Only Hardy and Nicole are left.)
  • Which houseguest served in Desert Storm? (Hardy guesses Shannon, Nicole guesses Kent. They are both wrong, so both press on.
  • Who was the tallest houseguest? (Mike. Hardy gets it right, Nicole answers Shannon. Hardy is the Head of Household again, and the first to repeat.)

Now things are going to get very interesting, for Saturday's show. And Hardy says he already knows who he is going to nominate. I don't know for sure, but my guess is Kent and Monica. No matter who he picks, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. And it certainly won't be as Hellish a week as the first time he went through it. But, just in case, maybe he'd better keep an eye on his toothbrush.
