Big Brother 2: The 'Will' Strategy

by David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
Will has been telling anybody who'll listen that they should take him into the final two because obviously anybody would beat him. But will they? Is it really such a lock? Or are the others setting themselves up for a fall if they believe him?

Will has managed to convince several of the other contestants that bringing him to the final two is a good plan because certainly they will win against him.

But is this really such a good plan for the others? Is it necessarily true? Remember, Kelly brought Richard with her to the final two in Survivor 1 because she thought she’d win against him. She was wrong. So what about Will?

Let’s presume that Kent is voted out this week (which looks likely and, if he’s not, this whole article is moot anyway). That leaves Will, Bunky, Nicole, Hardy, Krista, and Monica. If anybody but Bunky wins Head of Household (HoH) on Thursday, Bunky will almost certainly be evicted. Following this path, we have Nicole, Hardy, Krista, and Monica as possible people to face Will at the end. Let’s see how it would play out in any of these situations.

  • Shannon and Mike: Let’s face it – they want Will to win. They will vote for him in any case except possibly if he should be facing Krista. Then Mike will probably vote for Krista to win. It is in Will’s best interest to not face Krista at the end.
  • Kent: Kent has gotten so mad at most of the house that I could see him voting for Will over just about any of them just to show them how stupid their plan was to bring Will along.
  • Bunky: Like Kent, I could see him going against the others because of the way they’ve treated him.
  • Autumn: Autumn will almost certainly vote against Will. Hers is one of the few solid votes anybody opposing Will can count on.
  • Sheryl: While it seems, at first blush, that Sheryl would never vote for Will to win, I think there are certain situations where she might do just that. What if it’s Will against Nicole? Nicole promised Sheryl she’d get Will and Chill Town out of there. Instead, she has talked about allying with Will and, if it comes down to them as the final two, she will have obviously broken her promise. I could see Sheryl voting for Will, who has at least been honest about his dishonesty (so to speak). Sheryl has also seen all of what we’ve seen with Hardy and Krista, and may be disgusted by their backstabbing as well. So it’s not a sure thing that Sheryl would vote for whoever stands against Will if it should come to that.

OK, so we have only one solid vote against Will at this point. What about the others?

  • If Krista faces off against Will, she will get votes from Nicole, Hardy, and Monica – presuming her two-faced nature has stayed hidden. Because she will also get Mike’s vote, she will win.
  • If Nicole faces Will in the final two, she will get Hardy’s vote and Monica’s vote. Krista’s vote is by no means assured. Only three sure votes for Nicole – not on very solid ground.
  • If Monica goes up against Will, she will be assured of Nicole’s vote and Hardy’s vote. Krista will probably go with Will. Kent and Bunky may also, depending on whether they have forgiven her for blowing up at them and how she treats Bunky after Kent is gone. Nothing is certain here.
  • Finally, if Hardy goes up against Will, he will have Nicole’s vote and Monica’s vote, but that may be about it. Kent is incredibly pissed off at him, and Bunky probably is as well. He may manage to pull in three votes, but I don’t think he can get five, which is what he needs to win.

Right now, it is definitely in Will’s best interest to keep telling people that he is the one they should bring to the final two because he can be beaten easily. But Will is an admitted liar. I think he knows that he may actually have a shot at it if he can only make it that far. The others, meanwhile, may have deluded themselves into thinking that everybody else will automatically vote against Will.

In fact, however, it would be in their best interests to have none of the Chill Town members (including hanger-on, Krista) in the finals with them. If it comes to Nicole vs. Monica or Hardy vs. Nicole or Monica vs. Hardy, the Chill Town folks won’t necessarily vote all together; nor will the others. For example, in Nicole’s case, it would allow her to take advantage of the time she spent with Shannon and her teary video shown to Shannon after she was voted out.

So, will the remaining folks figure out that bringing Will along is a bad idea? It’s hard to say at this point. With so much bickering and fighting, it’s difficult to figure out who is allied at any given moment. And as old “enemies” are voted off, new ones emerge (as we’ve seen already with Kent and Bunky). When these folks are gone, votes still need to be taken, and new battle lines will be drawn. Only one thing is certain: Nobody should be dumb enough to think Will is out of the running until he actually leaves the house.
