Big Brother 2: A Tale of 3 Alliances... Updated

by Jeffrey Clinard -- 07/10/2002
Earlier we saw how three alliances had formed in the Big Brother 2 house. One of those has almost been eradicated, another went from ultra-secret to public knowledge thanks to Krista's big mouth. How are the alliances fairing and can we tell who is heading for the prize?

I once wrote that there were three alliances in the house. What a difference a few weeks makes.

Once there was three. Chill Town, three people who never lost that high school mentality that they were "cool" and "better" than the others in the house. The were a loud, noisy, and hated alliance. As I predicted, they didn't last. I also predicted an Untouchable would win. Right idea, but some people can't keep a winning strategy secret. Finally, the Odd Couple was doomed. I thought both would leave with their dignity intact. One remains. And I still bet on him leaving the house with style, or winning the game.

Kent and Bunky were the "Odd Couple." Two men, very different, but yet very alike. Kent probably understood it the best. This house is full of phony people. Kent gravitated to the one person in the house who was honest and a decent human being. Bunky did the same. Yes, Kent will never change his views about homosexuality. But Kent has shown he can accept decent human beings despite that. For his part, Bunky showed the same back. Kent treated Bunky with respect, and Bunky returned the favor. Both Kent and Bunky are fundamentally decent human beings. I don't hold Bunky evicting Kent against him. Bunky has always voted for the house. Kent left with dignity and honor, and still wants Bunky to win. Kent knew he was doomed, but wanted to leave with his image intact, and knew Bunky had to remain in the house, to possibly win. Kent, you have nothing to be ashamed of. You played the game as best you knew how, and showed America that a family man is worth more than money can buy. Despite what Mike Boogie said to you, you have been a great role model for your daughters.

The Untouchables. Sigh. They had the right idea. A secret alliance. When Chill Town became a noisy and hated alliance, they used that to their advantage. It was the winning strategy. They could have won by turning on Chill Town while still being in the shadows.

What went wrong? Well, for starters, Krista blabbed. Once the UT alliance was out to house view (never mind public view), it cost them. Nicole was smart in putting up the two tightest members against each other. Destroy the alliance. Either Monica or Krista will do as the victim. Hardy and Kent both recognized the power of an alliance, and both acted to destroy it. Hardy put budding lovebirds Shannon and Will against each other. Kent put Mike and Krista up. Different people; same strategy. Nicole putting up Monica and Krista is part of the same strategy. Destroy enemy alliances if you can. If Bunky or Will wins HoH next time, they would do well to put up the last two UT against each other (Hardy vs. the survivor of Krista and Monica).

Note: I do not like Will. I would never trust him as my doctor. Still, I admire his tactics. If he wins, it will be a fair and square victory for him. This is a game, and he is playing it, and probably very well. He realized that the Chill Town thing was not working, and now he is playing "dead man walking." I don't like him, but he's off the chopping block for now, and that is a strategy to be admired. I admire great strategists. Richard Hatch was hated in Survivor 1; but he knew what it took to win. Many never forgave Tina in Survivor 2 for voting out her friend Mad Dog. But it was proper strategy for her (and she won in the end). I always gave her credit. She won, and deserved it. Not because she was the best survivalist, but because she knew the game the best. Mad Dog was a liability to the tribe, and she had to go. As was Mitchell, though he was a political as well as a physical liability.

In BB2, Will has adopted the "down dog" attitude of a player who has already lost. It's really not a bad strategy for him. He can play on the games the others have played, and hope to duck under the radar. The uncovering of the UT alliance was a BIG plus for Will; he targeted an enemy without putting himself in the spotlight. He doesn't care if Krista or Monicia is evicted; he just wants to weaken the alliance. Nicole should want to as well. If she (foolishly) trusts Will, then he can help her win the game.

Next time it is all up for grabs. Nobody is loyal to anybody. Nicole and Will are supposed to trust each other... but Will is a self-admitted liar and Nicole has told Hardy that she is allied with him. Nicole is a fool if she trusts him. Bunky has no allies in the house, but maybe no enemies. Hardy has shown a lack of self control, and is vulnerable. Monica or Krista are also targets given their exposure as secret alliance members.

Who will win? At this point, I can't answer. I once predicted a UT member would win. Facts are in my favor (3 of the 6 remaining are UT), but this alliance has been exposed. If Krista had kept her mouth shut, I would still agree. But as facts stand, UT has dug a grave courtesy of Krista. With one of the UT out next week, it will sit as 2 UT, 1 Chill Town, 1 Odd Couple, and 1 Independent. All depends on the next Head of Household; after that, I will give my predictions.
