America’s Next Top Model 18, Episode 6: “Pop Their Bum”

by David M. Johnson -- 04/12/2011
After a week off, Tyra and her models are back and more ready to compete than ever. With last season’s America’s Next Top Model winner (right) making a guest appearance, and a music video in the works, the girls must once again prove they are worthy. Which model will prove she has it all and who will find themselves on the bottom? Read on to find out!

There are five Americans and four Brits left in the competition. Team USA opens their present for winning Best Photo last week. The camera cuts to Laura, who is sitting out by the pool talking about Kevin, her friend from home who died in an accident just days before the show started.

We then see some of the model playing around. They steal Laura’s teddy bear (a gift from Kevin) and play a prank, dangling the bear over the pool. The girls fight and somehow the teddy bear loses an ear, resulting in hysteric tears from Laura and for some reason her yelling at Kyle.

The crying continues and Laura discusses her distaste for Kyle, while Kyle talks about how psycho Laura is… Clearly, they don’t get along.

The next day the models hear a grand entrance from downstairs and head down to meet Lisa D’Amato, last cycle’s winner. Lisa tells the girls they’ll be filming music videos this week in girl groups. Of course, it’s Brits vs. Americans. Nadine Coyle, a former member of Girls Aloud will coach the UK models this week. As for the US models, Jessica Sutta, former member of the Pussycat Dolls, will help coach them. Both teams are happy with their coaches.

The models spend time with their coaches, listening to their tracks for the challenge. After hearing their music, the models head to the studio to work. Team UK has decided upon “Fiercely British” for their girl band name, while Team US has chosen “United Sirens of America.”

Team UK is first up to record their song and Team US is blown away by their performances. They all have a great time and Lisa is totally in love with each of their performances.

Team US is next up and attempts to bring the same amount of personality and spark that Team UK brought to the table. However, the “United Sirens of America” aren’t really doing a good job like the UK girls were and the UK girls can’t help but poke fun at Team US.

The models head to the Millennium Dance Studio to work with Tyra Banks (surprise!). Tyra is giving a seminar on the booty tooch. For the seminar Tyra has the girls wear panties with pads that enhance the rear-end… AzMarie refuses to put on her booty tooch panties and Tyra tells her to leave. AzMarie leaves, with no problem, telling us she is a grown woman and she won’t do it.

The next several minutes are full of the right (and wrong) ways to “tooch.” The tooches are going to be very important during the video shoot, and the girls wonder how AzMarie will be able to succeed without having learned the tooches. Catharine also comments that the Americans are slightly better at this and really know how to “Pop their bum.”

Their tooching lesson is finally over and the models head back to the mansion to begin work on the choreography for their music videos. AzMarie begins to show how “behind” (no pun intended) she is, since she did not take part in the lesson.

The practice is over and at 6 a.m., the models head to the location to shoot their video with Jay Manuel. In hair and make-up and while getting all “done-up” both groups receive advice from their coaches.

First up to record is Team UK, or Fiercely British, as they are known for their video of “We’ll Mash You Up.” Sophie begins her filming and immediately talks about music videos not being her specialty. She does several takes of her shot and knows they aren’t perfect, but she is having so much fun. Annaliese is up next to perform and Nadine Coyle describes her as a ball of energy. Catharine implements several techniques she learned from Tyra earlier. Alisha is last up and shows how much energy and commitment she – and the other Brits – still have in them.

Team USA, the United Sirens of America are up to film “Stop, Drop, and Tooch.” The drama between Laura and Kyle is extremely evident and the filming is very rough. We can see it in the expressions of all models, as well as Jay Manuel. Jay talks about Kyle’s performance drawing down the entire video. Kyle asks for a break and leaves the video shoot for a while, causing the other models to worry.

AzMarie heads to the bathroom to help Kyle out and encourages her in all she does. Kyle is now ready to bring it. Seymone is first up to record her solo and Jessica Sutta gives compliments to Seymone for finding her “sass.” AzMarie is up next and Jay comments about AzMarie’s attitude and ego. She’s talented, but can’t let her arrogant attitude spread like a “brush fire.” Kyle is up next and is “dead.” She needs to be a lot bigger for the video. Eboni tries to show her youth and rock as much as she can. Lastly, it’s Laura’s turn and Jay tells us Laura is good, even when she’s in the background.

The models head back to the mansion and read that only eight of them will continue on after hearing from the judges during tomorrow’s panel. Both AzMarie and Kyle fear they could be sent home this week. Meanwhile, the British girls say an American better go home this week.

Time for judging. The panel consists of the regular set of judges plus the teams’ mentors, Jessica Sutta and Nadine Coyle.

First up is Team USA’s music video. Tyra then starts by calling Seymone up to see some of her best poses from the video. Nigel tells Seymone she owned the performance and Jessica tells her she has a beautiful face in the video. Laura is called up and the judges commend her on her ability to have two personalities, crazy and beautiful, which Nigel and Kelly love. Up next is AzMarie. Nigel tells her she had a lack of commitment to the video. Kelly doesn’t understand what she was doing with her vocals, and Tyra asks about Az leaving the booty tooch seminar, giving AzMarie a chance to apologize, which she does.

Eboni is called up and Tyra talks about the young hipness of her performance. Eboni reminds Jessica of a pop band member. Last up is Kyle. Kyle hears that her face and eyes were a bit disconnected in the performance and she needs to push her personality more.

The Fiercely British group are now up to see their video and hear the judges’ comments on their individual performances. In general, I like the Brits’ video better, but what will the judges think?

Tyra loves it! Tyra says she even feels like she was watching a real music video. The judges tell Catharine she had perfect booty tooching and Kelly tells her she had a nice, sexy performance. The first words Sophie hears from the judges are “blond bombshell,” and her performance was one of their favorites of the day. Alisha is next up and is told she is professional and has “the squint” Nigel is looking for. Alisha milked every moment during the shoot. Annaliese is last up and Jessica commends her energy. Kelly and Tyra tell her she did a great job.

After the judges’ deliberation is over, Tyra tells the girls that only eight of them will move on to the next round. Tyra announces that the Brits had the best overall video, according to the judges. The first name Tyra calls is… Alisha. Her commitment and energy paid off!

The following models also safe are: Sophie, Catharine, Annaliese, Seymone, Laura and Eboni.

AzMarie and Kyle are left to hear who will head home. Tyra tells the two that their physical aspects are great, but they lack other things needed to be in the industry. So who stays?

Kyle.

So AzMarie is going home. Wow. I am personally shocked. Because AzMarie didn’t commit and cooperate, she is sent home. She shows little emotion, but is still thankful for the experience.

In the words of Jay Manuel, that’s a wrap!
