A Look Ahead at the Survivor 2002 Calendarby David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
We’ve reviewed books, DVDs, and, of course, TV shows here, so when I saw the Survivor 2002 Calendar, I thought, “What the heck.” There is, of course, the thought as was expressed in an Amazon buyer review of The Weakest Link Calendar, which was essentially that it’s a calendar, what else is there to say? But this is Survivor, so there is always something to say. What is contained here? Is it worth looking at if you’ve already seen all the shows, read all the books, etc.? These are the types of questions we can answer even for a calendar. First of all, it is a day-by-day desk calendar – 6 pages per week (Saturday and Sunday are combined). Each page has a color photograph of players, the landscape, or some other feature of either Survivor 1 or Survivor 2 (I guess we’ll have to wait for the 2003 calendar for Survivor: Africa). Along with the picture is some related information – a quote or a “fun fact” or a summary of some event that took place or the like. Many of the classic quotes are in there. Rudy makes numerous appearances, as might be expected both because he was so quotable and because he made it to the final three. Among the many are his statement at the final Tribal Council after blowing the last Immunity Challenge: “I don’t have nothin’ to say to these two. I’d just like to let everybody here know how dumb I feel after the mistake I made yesterday.” And, yes, it includes the infamous, “Me and Richard got to be pretty good friends, not in a homosexual way, that’s for sure.” Besides Rudy, we have other famous and infamous moments. There is Jerri’s quote about Keith not being able to cook rice, and Keith shooting back with his comment about not wanting to be pushed around by “a bartender wannabe actress.” And, of course, there’s Tina’s threat to send them to time out if they don’t stop fighting. We have Jeff’s amusing comment about Mike’s fishing, noting: “When other people catch a fish, they just catch a fish, but when Mike catches it, there are trumpets that blare and angels that sing…” And then there’s Mike’s comment about Kimmi’s cleanliness is also included: “When some of the girls put on a different top, you’ll see a tan line. When Kimmi puts on a different top, you’ll see a dirt line.” We even get Jeff Probst’s observation to Ogakor from early in Survivor 2: “Kucha is kicking your ass.” Besides the quotes, there are a number of “fun facts” that fans may remember when they read it, but have otherwise forgotten. For example, Tina wasn’t even supposed to be on Survivor 2, but was an alternate. The Super Pole 2000 makes an appearance, as does Greg’s nature phone. There are also a number of the trivia questions from various challenges included. On a disappointing note, I saw that some of the pictures are duplicated in the calendar. But if you’re not looking at it all at once (like I did for this review), odds are you probably wouldn’t notice. Some may also be disappointed that there aren’t more bathing suit photos – luckily, there don’t appear to be any birthday suit photos of Rich, either (though it is mentioned). Interestingly, I didn’t see a single picture of Stacey – even a group photo of the Survivor 1 folks appears to have been cropped so it only includes about half of them, and she isn’t in there. Mind you, I might have missed one, but I was definitely looking. The calendar fittingly ends with Rich’s final words, preceded on December 30 by a quote from Tina about sticking it out ‘til the end. It is interesting that, looking back at these, I can still remember it well. That is perhaps the biggest appeal of such a calendar. Who could ever forget Rich and Rudy, Susan and Kelly, Jerri and Colby, Tina and Keith? This calendar reminds us of some of the most entertaining portions of these shows. And if you need a calendar anyway, it might as well be one that’s amusing.
