Popstars 2, Episode 7: Let’s Get Together … Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

by Lisa Jacobs -- 07/10/2002
The six are selected and it's time to get down to business. But when three are chosen to be the main lead singers, and Donovan writes songs that exclude the others, a rift begins to form.

Over 6000 hopefuls have been turned away. Now it’s time for the six winners of the Popstars 2 competition to meet and move into their huge L.A. mansion. Those six are:

Donavan Green
Dorothy Szamborska
Moi Juarez
Josh Henderson
Laurie Gidosh
Monika Christian

First to arrive at the mansion is Moi, the L.A. native who previously lived in a camper in his mom’s driveway. He is met by Dorothy, a Polish immigrant whose mom brought her to this country to give her daughter better opportunities. Next is the singer, songwriter, choreographer, and clothing designer, Donavan. Then there’s Laurie, who is happily surprised to find her friend Dorothy at the house. Josh hopes Moi has been chosen to be in the group and is overwhelmed to find him there. Monika thinks Josh has for sure made the group, and lo and behold, he’s there waiting to meet her.

Next they pick rooms and discuss Josh’s status in the band. He tells them he’s on probation until he changes his singing/dancing style. Right now he’s too much like Justin Timberlake (like that’s a bad comparison), and the group doesn’t think it’s fair. The loner, Donavan, likes getting the only single room, but Laurie is worried about being on her own for the first time. She says, “Usually when I’m home, I’m coming home to my mom cooking me dinner, my mom’s waking me up in the morning. I get babied at home.” Speaking of babies, Monika is having a hard time being away from her infant daughter, but knows it’s best for her future to try and make it as a Popstar.

The Popstars’ judges – Executive Vice President of 143 Records, Jaymes Foster-Levy; choreographer Tony Michaels; and record producer/songwriter Brad “RipRock” Daymond – come in and lay down the law. In three months they will record a CD and be ready for their first live concert. Jaymes says, “They can’t even leave the house unless they’re in disguise. They can’t have friends over … they can’t share it with their family and boyfriend and girlfriend. They have to keep it under wraps, and if they can’t it’s an issue” – which is stupid because they all had their friends and family with them when they found out they won.

After some time in the studio, the judges tell the group that three lead singers have been chosen: Donovan, Laurie, and Monika. This doesn’t bother Moi, Josh, and Dorothy right off the bat, but it eventually starts to wear on them. Then when Donavan starts writing songs and only including Laurie and Monika in the recording process, a rift is formed in the group. When they try to discuss it with the lead singers, the quiet Donavan shows his irrational, conceited side.

In choreography, Josh is struggling, but the whole group is having problems. Plus, the emotional turmoil caused by the split in the group is causing a serious lack of morale. Tony tries to talk to them about it, but he’s kind of a slave driver, so it doesn’t quite work when he tries to be nice.

Next week, things go from bad to worse. Donavan wants to go home and Josh is not improving. Someone leaves the group, but who?

Next Week: Should I stay or should I go now?
