Popstars 2, Episode 8: Spoilers from All Sidesby Lisa Jacobs -- 07/10/2002
Last week’s episode included a cliffhanger where we were teased with the information that one of the six finalists would be leaving the group. Then a few days later, the Popstars 2 album came out. On the cover are Donavan, Dorothy, Josh, Laurie, and Monika – with Moi nowhere to be seen. Thanks to the guys at The WB, Stone Stanley Productions, and 143 Records for spoiling their own show for us.
You’d think that would be enough for most incompetent entertainment executives, but not for the crack managers of Scene 23. I had to be home Thursday morning to wait for the cable guy, and stumbled across the band performing on Regis & Kelly! No warning. No publicity. Just screw the fans over a little more guys. That’ll keep us loyal. Anyway, Thursday night was the resolution episode to the big “cliffhanger.” We begin where we left off last week: Josh is in danger of being kicked out and Donavan is ready to go home. Also, the rift between the group created when the Popstars’ judges (Executive Vice President of 143 Records, Jaymes Foster-Levy; choreographer Tony Michaels; and record producer/songwriter Brad “RipRock” Daymond) announced that Donavan, Monika, and Laurie would be the group’s lead singers is still in effect. But then Donavan reaches out to the rest of the group when he asks Josh to sing lead on a song he’s writing for the album called, “Respect Me.” Fences appear to be mended. Next, Donavan goes into overdrive by choreographing a dance for them to do to his song, designing outfits for the group to wear while dancing to his song, and making the outfits by hand. But when they perform the routine for Jaymes and Tony, Moi improvises and grabs his crotch, which irritates Donavan. Donavan pouts and is ready to bail. But before Donavan can exit, the judges confront Moi. They say he has not only seen his friends outside of the house, but he has also had people in the house. A big no-no and strictly forebidden. Which, as I’ve said before, is totally ridiculous since his entire family and his girlfriend were there when they told him he was in the group – and now is even more ridiculous because they spoiled the identities of the members of the group themselves this week. Plus, the results of the Popstars 2 contest are not exactly in the same league as the results of the winner of Survivor. Anyway, there are tears and anger, but Moi says it’s all his fault and he will go. Donavan gives him a note about having what it takes, but needing to learn a little impulse control. The group has a meeting and decides to pull together and bear down to get the record done before the deadline. But they also need to pick a name. Scene 23 is thrown out as a choice because there are two boys and three girls who are all from different “scenes.” Obviously, from the album already in stores, it stuck. Next Week: Making the Video.
