Popstars 2, Episode 9: Making the Video with Scene 23

When you’re a popstar, the video is at least as important as the song. So it’s time for Scene 23 to get on their dancing shoes, pick out a “mate” for their shots, and head to the studio to get that video going.

With Moi’s forced departure last week for bringing people into the Popstars’ mansion, you’d think the remaining members of Scene 23 would be a little gloomy. However, if they were, they didn’t let us know about it in this week’s episode. The kids seemed to bounce right back into work and fun. We see them bonding over birthday cakes (Josh, Laurie, and Monika all turned 20) and getting busy on the dance floor and in the studio. But for Josh and Dorothy, being away from their significant others is hard. Presents from home help ease the pain of separation.

Back in the studio, we watch the group record the last song for their album, “I Really Don’t Think So.” Then they get a sneak preview of their album cover as well as the CD-ROM extras that will be included with it. The real excitement is when they find out it’s time to film their first video, also for “I Really Don’t Think So.” But as they start the grueling dance rehearsals for the shoot, Donavan’s neck goes into severe muscle spasms. He is put on medication and given an injection, but a grouchy Donavan says, “Right now I can’t move. I’m not going to get up and dance because the littlest move that I do has me in pain.” Diva, thy name is Donavan.

Another fun part of shooting a video is getting to cast their own romantic lead. The kids get to look through headshots and video auditions to pick who they’ll get to make out with on screen. But the kids, who already know how hard it is to be the contestant, are finding it hard to play the role of judge. Eventually they manage and soon it’s time to shoot the video.

One of the show’s sponsors, Wet Seal, outfits them and they shoot their solos. Of course, Josh is a little hottie, and, as I predicted from the first episode, is akin to Making the Band’s Ashley Angel. But problems arise as Donavan is having a reaction to the medication for his neck. His solo is moved to the end so he has time to rest, and, luckily, is feeling fine in time to do his part. Then, with the dance sequence and the vignettes with the actors they personally cast, Scene 23’s first video is done!
