Big Brother’s Justin in Trouble Againby Susan Schechter & David Bloomberg -- 07/10/2002
A wise man said, “A leopard does not change its spots.” Radio psychologists have also been known to say that men don’t change. And if men don’t change and leopards don’t change, then it is safe to assume this tautology will end with Justin, a contestant from Big Brother 2. He has apparently not changed since he was expelled this summer from the house. Every time Justin has dealt with this issue since his expulsion, he keeps saying, “I was joking.” And it almost looks believable. He obviously knows how to interview, to get on a television show. But a person’s true personality eventually comes out, and actions speak louder than words. For those who do not know the latest, according to a story run on the AP wire, and in the New York Post, Justin was arrested two nights ago on Monday, January 7, on charges that he assaulted his girlfriend. Of course we need to keep in mind that he is innocent until proven guilty. For now, these are all just “allegations.” So since the jury has not heard the case, here are the facts as reported. You, gentle reader make your own conclusions. According the wires and the Post, “Justin Sebik, 27, of Bayonne (NJ) was arrested after the woman was found on a Bayonne street about 2 am with a broken ankle and choke marks around her neck, police said.” Again, quoting the AP wire discussion of the police report, “Sebik choked her and threw her on the ground, causing her to her to fracture her ankle.” He was arrested without incident at the scene and later released on $1,000 bail. The woman was treated at Bayonne Hospital. In an article appearing in the January 9 (New) Jersey Journal, Justin said “As we were going uptown, I was breaking up with the girl, so it got to the point where I said, “Forget it, let me walk.” Next think I know she goes crazy on me. [She’s] punching me all over the place.” “So I get out and she’s still hitting me,” he told the interviewer. “She goes for a shot at the back of my head and misses. So she goes down and hurts her ankle, I guess. It was all a pretty minor mishap.” He predicted the charges would be dropped. As noted above, this is the same person who told Julie Chen that he was “only joking” when he pulled the knife on Krista and pretended to swing a floor sweeper at her during Big Brother 2 this past summer, between kissing her. According to what we reported last summer, he specifically asked, “Would you mind if I killed you.” A rather drunk Krista giggled in response, and they continued kissing. At the time, the producers – who had already warned Justin for his intimidating behavior, threw him off the show. However, he showed no indication that he had any idea why they had done so. While most viewers applauded the decision, many also figured that Krista was never in any actual danger. Now, however, one has to wonder. Justin had arrests before – three counts of assault and two for theft. The charges never made it to a courthouse, there sure seems to be a pattern developing here. While he was still in the house, he told the producers that he understood intimidation and violence were not allowed. Yet he proceeded to try to intimidate and go through a violent phase in which he threw things around, urinated on the window, etc., culminating in the incident with Krista. But, of course, none of this was his fault. Anybody who thought differently was, according to him, an “idiot.” When he was arrested before, the charges were dropped. Now he thinks they will be dropped again. Indeed, it seems the most that has ever happened to him after charges of violence was getting kicked out of the Big Brother house. He doesn’t appear likely to start taking responsibility for his actions anytime soon. And now, Justin has the misfortune to have been, according to him, attacked by his girlfriend, who just happened to beat herself up and somehow gotten choke marks on her neck in the process. Indeed, I’m sure that once again, anybody who doesn’t believe his version of the story is an “idiot.” Nothing is ever his fault, of course. Hopefully, a judge and/or jury will get a chance to take a look at this one. And maybe he’ll have to take responsibility for his actions.
