Survivor 2's Alicia May Get Job as New York Reporterby Susan Schechter -- 07/10/2002
Big news for one former Survivor contestant from the Big Apple. Channel 5, the Fox affiliate, may be getting a new heath and fitness reporter, who is none other than Survivor 2’s Alicia Calaway. Today’s New York Post’s page six – the best place in town to find gossip – is reporting that Alicia was seen shadowing one of Channel 5 reporters last week. “Alicia and I had a couple of great meetings,” Channel 5 news director Neil Goldstein told the Post. “I have a lot of respect for her ability as a fitness professional – and she also sparks really well on camera.” Of course she does, Mr. Goldstein. Her finger-waving at Kimmi Kappenberg, another contestant, was priceless. Great TV. And she has that Reebok commercial experience as well. "She has no reporting background, but she was kind of intrigued," said one source, according to the paper. Of course she was – many ex-contestants would love to use their time on Survivor to extend it into making a living. During Survivor 2, in the Australian Outback, Alicia was the eighth person voted out. The main reason was that she was on the wrong side of the Ogakor alliance that dominated after the two tribes merged. Another reason for her being voted off at that particular time was that, as Jerri said, she was too intimidating. It should be recalled that she won the Miss Connecticut Amateur Natural Bodybuilding Competition in 1994 and was definitely one of the strongest contestants there – both physically and mentally. According to the Survivor 2 website, “She is also certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and is a medical exercise specialist of the American Academy of Health, Fitness and Rehabilitation.” Since her appearance on Survivor, Alicia has appeared on an episode of Big Brother 2 (along with Sue Hawk, Gervase Peterson, and Jeff Varner), and is on the already-mentioned commercial with the Survivor 2 winner, Tina Wesson. If Alicia gets this job, she will be appearing nightly on the 10:00 evening news. Other former Survivors who have gone on to news posts are first series alphabet schemer Sean Kenniff, who is a medical reporter for a Miami station, and Survivor 2’s Kel Gleason, who is Global TV’s Survivor reporter for Canada (click here for our recent interview with Kel). Perhaps New Yorkers will have the opportunity to see Alicia wag her finger at the weatherman when he gets the day’s prediction wrong. We will have more updates as news becomes available.
