Sorority Life 2 / Fraternity Life: Meet the Greeksby Jen Shrader -- 02/24/2003
Well, the Sorority Life reunion was last weekend and the new season of Sorority Life and Fraternity Life is set to kick off Wednesday at 10 p.m. (9 Central) on MTV. But before that can happen we have to have a "Meet the Greeks" preview special, because MTV is going to ride this cow for all its worth. So let's ride, shall we? Our hosts for the show are Sigma sisters Candace and Becca, from the first Sorority Life. They talk about the addition of Fraternity Life and wonder how a fraternity could be more interesting than a sorority. Well considering the only "boys" we saw last season were at the formal, that's an interesting question. However, since the boys and girls of the new season admit to their fair share of partying — someone mentioned the University of New York at Buffalo is the sixth most popular party school in the nation — this is going to be an interesting year. In other words, look for a lot less drama and a lot more drinking. First we get a look at the girls of Delta Zi Omega. Talia is president and there are about 20 others who introduce themselves. Their chapter meetings are held in the house attic, and they say everyone's usually pretty hot and pissy before the meeting's over. There are shots of the girls getting in a hot tub at one of the school's football games and going out and getting various body parts pierced. They talk about friendship and activities and philanthropy — serving up barbecue at an annual concert. The sorority got its charter on campus in 1988 and they say the members must be down to earth, loyal, smart, and educated. Then we get a tour of the house. After a break, we meet Sigma Chi Omega, literally the new kids on the block. They were chartered in 1999 and have about 30 members. Colin is their president. The guys say they are the most active fraternity on campus — active in charity and active in goofing off. The group hands out a weekly "ass clown" award. Then we get a tour of the fraternity house. It is NASTY. The guys and girls in the two shows live just down the street from each other, so the next thing we see is a mixer — a big Greek toga party, how original. The guys and girls trash each other's houses as a joke. Now we're back to Becca and Candace. Becca gets her terminal perk button stuck on "go" for a few minutes, talking about how great rush is. Yeah, ‘cause the rush she ran went sooo well. Candace reminds Becca that there are rush rules and says she's made up a few of her own. 1. Don't drink in the house when you're the sober sister. We see the flashback of Candace starting to drink one night, then getting a call 10 minutes later that fellow pledge Jessica needs a ride home. D'oh. 2. Keep up on your classes. Flashback: Jessica doesn't want to go to Vegas because she got a C in one of her classes and she's behind in the readings. Candace: "Welcome to Candace's life." 3. Don't leave a sorority event early, especially to go to a strip club. Insert shots of the famous formal ditching here. 4. Don't forget to catch your sister when engaged in a trust activity. During a trust fall last season, the girl who was supposed to catch Jessica turned around, and Jessica fell on her butt. Then we see a montage of the rush in Buffalo. Candace and Becca say the girls are strict and the guys are hardcore. No girls, no guys, no alcohol, no problem, right? The current Greeks say the rush was hard but one of the best times of their life. Don't forget to tune in Wednesday to see what happens.
