Survivor: The Amazon – An Interview with Deena Bennett

by David Bloomberg -- 05/05/2003
Deena Bennett thought she could get Alex Bell tossed, but exactly the reverse occurred. Here Deena admits her mistakes and is honest about where she went wrong, as well as giving a good appraisal of the game overall. Also, she tells us what she thought of Heidi’s Tribal Council comment about bringing intelligence to the game.

Deena Bennett tried to get Alex Bell tossed, but was one week too soon. Alex turned the tables and the D.A. joined the jury. RealityNewsOnline had the chance to ask Deena a few questions about her time in the Amazon, and she gave us some very honest appraisals of just what went on.

RealityNewsOnline: Hello, Deena, and thanks for taking the time to answer these questions from RealityNewsOnline! Let’s start at the beginning. What were your plans originally – before Jenna, Heidi, and Shawna came to you with their alliance and asked you to join?

Deena: I actually had plans with Shawna on day one. Shawna went to the girls and played both sides very well. We all mutually agreed to form the one alliance. Joining with the younger girls was my best shot at advancing in the game and I think it worked out well for me, at least until the swap.

RNO: Did you trust Rob to go with your alliance "to the end" and did you plan to take HIM all the way there?

Deena: Yes, but we also had an understanding that either he or I could dump the alliance if it became necessary. Clearly, Rob needed to choose and I came out on the losing end.

RNO: Why did you think that Heidi would keep the secret about wanting to take out Alex when Heidi and Jenna were practically joined at the hip?

Deena: Because I thought Heidi agreed with me and that she would wait until I talked with Jenna. I hugely underestimated the bond with Alex, Heidi, and Jenna.

RNO: Did you have Christy fooled into thinking she was part of the core alliance, or was she pretty much just doing her own thing?

Deena: The only core alliance I belonged to was with Rob. There was never an alliance with the five of us. But I really liked Christy, her work ethic, her personality, and her attitude. I wanted to go far in this game with Christy.

5. Even if you didn't think you needed immunity, why didn't you try to deny it to Matthew?

Deena: Arrogance. That and I never could have beaten Matt with the worm. He swallowed it whole and alive. I could have eaten it, just never as fast but I at least should have tried.

RNO: In the first individual immunity challenge – which you won – why did Heidi and Jenna strip when it seemed from the footage that they didn't really gain anything by it?

Deena: But they did. They called for the food item that they wanted and it was brought to them. It was a win-win situation for them.

RNO: Considering what we've seen on TV, many viewers were quite amused at Heidi's comment at Tribal Council about how one of the strengths she brings to the game is her intelligence – since you have the benefit of no editing, what did you think of it?

Deena: It was just as funny at tribal council as it was on TV, only I was able to laugh out loud when I saw it on TV.

RNO: Why did you decide to go after Alex before all of the people outside of your alliance had been voted out?

Deena: Because I was a goner no matter what. Remember the footage at the coffee house with Alex and Jenna? I may have been too much of a threat to keep on until everyone outside the group was voted off. I was a short timer and I needed to get Alex off. I just did not realize how strong he was. My error was not recruiting Matt or Butch to my cause.

RNO: Who did you believe was most responsible for stabbing you in the back?

There cannot really be stabbing in the back when it is inherent in the very nature of the game of Survivor. But who was the best con-man? Probably Rob and to some extent Heidi.

RNO: What single move do you regret the most?

Deena: Not attempting to get the votes of Butch and Matt to get off Alex. That and the 800 really stupid things I said during the course of the show.

RNO: Thanks very much!
