Sam Solovey’s Suitcase

by Betsy Wasser -- 04/20/2004
On the final episode of The Apprentice, rejected candidate Sam Solovey offered to pay Donald Trump $250,000 for the opportunity to work for him. Did Trump say yes? And where did Sam get all of that cash?

It was a moment that showcased Sam Solovey’s now famous nerve. On the final episode of The Apprentice, Sam offered Donald Trump a quarter of a million dollars in cash for the privilege of working for him. Trump asked him if it was real money, and when he found out that it was, said he’d consider the offer.

Viewers were left with a number of questions. How did Sam come up with all of that cash? And did Donald Trump take him up on his offer? It turns out that The Washington Post has the answers.

When Sam made his offer to Donald Trump, he said that he had the cash in a Samsonite briefcase. In an interview with Washington, D.C. area radio station Z-104, Sam did not deny that Samsonite gave him the money to mention their product on air. In fact, Sam said, “I gave them about a half-a-million dollar ad spot on national TV. They won’t let me say a darn thing, but I will say that the briefcase was promptly shipped from the lovely Samsonite corporation.” Sam declined sharing any further details on the deal.

As for Donald Trump, he did not take Sam up on his offer. It looks like a mere quarter of a million dollars isn’t enough to impress The Donald.
