America’s Next Top Model 3, Episode 5: The Girl with the Snoutby Phil Kural -- 10/22/2004
Previously, Toccara’s full figure made her a star at the girls’ first runway show. Once again, Kelle got some harsh criticism from the judges on her photo shoot, and, although Jennipher performed a critical error in front of the judges by writing “ANTM” on her butt, it was Kristi’s insecurity that made her the fourth girl cut. It’s nighttime, right after the elimination. Eva talks to Jenn about putting “ANTM” on her behind. Jenn tells the camera that she likes to joke around and didn’t expect this to be such a flop. Eva says that Tyra is a classy woman, and even Janice didn’t think it was funny. If Janice doesn’t like something raunchy, it can’t be good! Ann tells the camera she’s glad they finally liked her shot, and thinks this should prove to the judges why she is there in the first place. In the morning, we see Kelle looking in the mirror trying to practice with her faces. Toccara is on the phone with her dad and tells him she’s mad at her mom. Then, she tells the camera that she is proud of who she is and can’t rely on anyone. Next comes Tyra mail, informing the girls that New York pretzels aren’t the only thing that’s twisted. Off to the gym they go! The girls walk into the gym and find Saavas, their personal trainer, who tells them they will be doing yoga for the day. The girls begin their exercises, and Ann says it’s rough. Toccara decides that she doesn’t like yoga at all. In the middle of their exercises, Janice Dickinson sneaks in, and all the girls eventually see her. She gets up and goes to the front, then begins to lecture the girls on poses. She tells the camera that, with her direction, anyone can become a diva. She then gets into her swimsuit, which leaves little for the imagination. Janice shows the girls how to pose in a swimsuit and tells them it’s important not to look like a porn star, as she opens her legs about as far as anyone I’ve ever seen! She then basically bends Toccara every which way and puts Cassie, Jenn, and Ann in a photo triple. About two minutes in, she kicks Jenn out of the photo, while Eva tells the camera that Jenn is in trouble. Jenn says she’s not worried about it because it’s only practice, so it’s no big deal. Janice says it’s time for gowns. She puts all the girls in evening gowns, and dons one herself. All the girls try to work their gowns, but Eva is told she’s doing it all wrong. Janice gives her some pointers, and tells the camera that Eva has promise. Norelle also impresses Janice, even though she doesn’t know how to walk in high heels. Janice calls Toccara a queen, and loves most of the other girls too… but then comes Jenn. She tells Jenn to pretend it’s a cow giving birth in Idaho. How is that supposed to help her pose? Janice tells the camera that Jenn has no expression and she’s not impressed at all. Kelle is told to hide her face if she can’t do it correctly. Kelle tells the camera that she knows she’s not doing well, and maybe she’s just not as cute as she thought. Janice thanks the girls for their time, and heads out. Back at the loft, Kelle and Yaya sing and dance in front of the mirror, until Toccara busts out with them. Tyra comes in and gathers up all the girls. She tells them that she knows it’s a stressful time for them, and it’s time for some one-on-one talks. Kelle is up first. Tyra tells her that her strength is her skin, but she has to figure out how to place her face better. Ann says that she knew modeling was hard, but thought it would come naturally to her. Tyra says that she has to practice every day, just like she had to for water polo. Cassie says she’s glad to be there, and won’t go back to stripping. Tyra agrees and says she won’t allow it. Tyra talks to Jenn and says she doesn’t feel like Jenn wants to be there. Jenn doesn’t understand that, and Tyra says that she has to learn how to show some fire and emotion in her shots. Jenn says that she knows she has to show personality, and will try harder. Toccara tells Tyra that she’s there to break barriers. People tell her she’s too big, but she doesn’t care. She’s been through so much negative, and starts to cry. Tyra tells her crying will make her a better person because nobody is one-dimensional. Toccara just wants to help her mom and dad get back together, but she now realizes that they need to want that too. Tyra knows that Toccara thinks that if she is successful her parents will get back together, but that’s not enough. Toccara reiterates that she won’t go back to the same thing, and cries because she can’t do anything about it. Tyra calls Toccara an inspiration, and to use her power. They hug, and I sigh. In their room, Toccara tells Yaya that Tyra made her cry. Toccara tells the camera that she’s shocked that she cried, and knows that she has to be strong, and not be a crier. She says she WILL be the last one standing. Kelle crying in the bathroom. She says she always has the worst photos, and is starting to think she’s ugly. Toccara comes in and tells her not to cry. Kelle says she can’t look in the mirror anymore, and Toccara tells the camera that Kelle came into this whole thing saying she was so beautiful, and now the judges broke her. Toccara takes Kelle and listens to her. Kelle says that she figured out that she has a snout, and she can’t really fix it, then shows Toccara a model in a magazine with the same thing. Toccara tells her to work it because if another girl can make money with a snout, Kelle can too. Kelle still seems discouraged. Tyra mail mentions something about being skimpy! Nicole thinks that it will be a runway show in panties. The girls arrive at La Perla, a lingerie store. Amanda says they are the “It” store when it comes to lingerie. They are introduced to Simon Doonan, the creative director of Barneys department stores. He says the challenge is about posing. The girls will get into lingerie and stand in the store window, in front of the whole city. Jenn is nervous right away. They will be divided into groups and pose for ten minutes. Each girl will be judged on creativity, style, and technique. Toccara is really excited, especially when she hears the winner will get $5000 worth of lingerie. Who needs that much lingerie? The girls get all dressed up, and Eva tells the wardrobe lady that she isn’t sure what her bra size is because she doesn’t wear one. How classy. Toccara says she’s a 33DDD and everyone has a look of shock on their face. Turns out they don’t have Toccara’s bra size (shock!), so she says she’ll just have to deal. Yaya does some practicing in the mirror, trying to remember what Janice said to them. Kelle also admits that she’s been practicing. The first group is Kelle, Nicole, and Yaya. Yaya says that there are only a few people on the street when they start, but, when they stop, others start to stop as well, which makes them nervous. Kelle isn’t sure what Yaya is doing with all the flexing, while Nicole is doing some weird poses as well. Simon says that Kelle is natural and effortless. Toccara, Cassie, and Norelle go next, and it looks like Cassie is all over the place. Simon tells them to remember that Janice said class before crass, which was definitely aimed at Cassie and her stripper ways. Amanda, Eva, Ann, and Jenn are the final group. Simon says that Ann has potential, and he loves who she is. He wants more from the group as a whole, and feels that Jennipher is very dull. After the competition is over, Simon gathers up the girls and gives them some advice. He doesn’t feel that Amanda was built for lingerie. Yaya is too sporty, and Norelle looks too sweet. Kelle is creative and relaxed, while Cassie was too “bada-bing.” Nicole looked like a 50’s pin-up, which was cute, while Toccara didn’t show any of her personality. Ann wasn’t creative, while Eva came off as a show-off. Then, my favorite, he tells Jenn that she looked like she just took a Quaalude. I almost busted out in tears. He says the winner of the competition is Kelle, who is thrilled more than words can describe. She is thinking that, hopefully, this will reassure the judges about her. She’s told that she can pick two girls. The first girl will get $1500 in lingerie, and the second girl will get $500. Kelle picks Amanda, and Toccara. Cassie tells the camera that it really doesn’t matter that Kelle won, because she still takes bad pictures. Uh-oh, Cassie is getting claws! Tyra mail tells the girls to be ready for their shoot at 7:45 a.m. Kelle thinks they are going to have to box other girls in the next shoot, and Toccara says she will “knock a bitch out, and still look fabulous.” Jenn is on the phone with her boyfriend and tells him that she has to do more to stick around, and wants to win, but nobody sees it. He tells her that she better show them. What great advice. The next morning, the girls arrive at the Roxy, and Jay Manual is there to greet them. He says that a lot of hair and makeup has to be done, so they have to start right away. Toccara says he won’t tell them what’s going on or what the shoot is about. All the girls get ready and Norelle loves her makeup. The girls are brought out to the shoot, and Jay congratulates Kelle on her win at the challenge, even though he can’t believe it. Tyra comes in on skates and tells them that this week they will be modeling purses – on skates! Ann says they read way too much into the mail, and never expected this. Mathew Jordan Smith is their photographer for the shoot, and he has done a lot Tyra’s earlier work. As the girls get ready, he wishes them luck. The shoot begins, and Norelle is first. He loves her, but thinks she’s scared. Norelle tells the camera the skates messed her up. Yaya goes next and is surprised at her inability to skate, yet Jay loves all her poses. Toccara heads out and is having issues. She falls several times, but says she’s fine. She says that all her falls are graceful. Cassie goes next, and Jay says that she was forgetting that she was selling the bag. In comes Jenn, and both the photographer and Jay feel she has no energy. She says she has the skating down, but it’s all the extra stuff that’s doing her in. Eva comes in and works the camera. Jay loves her shoot and feels she was very fluid. Nicole tells the camera she feels great, and also takes a spill, but Jay says she walked into the shoot of the century. Kelle comes in and says that, since yesterday, she’s ready to show that she’s been practicing. Jay still doesn’t like it, and needs her to pose better. She says she thinks she might be the one going home this time. Here comes Amanda, who falls more than a few times, but they still love her shots. Jay tells her that, even though she fell the most, her shoot has the most workable frames. Ann is the last to go, and Jay keeps telling her to watch her mouth. He actually gets up and scolds her, which makes Ann do a better job. Jay tells the camera that Ann responds when they yell at her, not when they are nice. With that, the girls head home. It’s now night, and the girls are back at the loft. Tyra mail tells them that they will face the judges tomorrow. Yaya says they know that it’s coming, but a weight falls on the house when that Tyra mail comes in. Amanda hopes that Kelle isn’t the one to go, but feels that it will probably be Kelle or Ann. Ann is on the phone with her mom, who is telling Ann to calm down and just let things happen. Ann worries that if Kelle or Jenn has a good shot, she might be the one to leave. Kelle says that she tried to make an effort this time, while Jenn says she isn’t sure who is going home. Toccara is on the phone with her dad and tells him that she dedicated her day to him. She then tells the camera that she isn’t going home; someone else is. She’s so sassy – I love it! The girls walk into the elimination room, and Tyra tells them they are one step closer to becoming America’s next top model. She reminds them of the prizes and introduces them to the judges, along with special guest judge for the week, Mathew Jordan Smith, the photographer from the last shoot. Janice tells them their test this week will be to pose with their male model, Lanny. They will have to pose with him and will be judged on the poses they make. Toccara goes first and has fun. Ann moves him all around, while Norelle, Yaya, and Eva do the same thing. Jenn has some issues with the model, and Amanda gets seductive. Cassie has some fun, and Nicole plays around. Kelle tries to play around, but confuses the model who has no idea what she wants from him. Toccara is the first to face the judges. They feel her shoot with the model wasn’t that great, and Janice says she looks like a cavewoman. They look at her skating photo and find no sex appeal, but Tyra loves it. Norelle doesn’t look so great with the model either, but they love her shot this week. Jenn is up. The judges feel no intensity with the model and are scared by her photo this week. Mathew says he felt she gave the least of all the girls. Janice asks her why she wants to be a model, and Jenn tells her “they went through this last week.” Tyra doesn’t look happy. Eva steps up. They like her with Lanny, but aren’t sure how they feel about her makeup this week in her shoot. Instead of blaming, she defends the makeup artist. Tyra respects that. Nicole goes next and they basically love everything about her, and call her strong. The judges love Yaya with the model, and feel her shot was great this week, but that she’s starting to look too much like a dancer. Ann is next, and Nole’ says she keeps letting him down. Her skating shot isn’t the best this week, and she’s told she needs more energy. Amanda steps up and they love her posing with the model and adore her on skates. The judges feel Cassie was okay with the model, and empty of emotion on skates. Kelle looks bossy with the model and very tired. They look at her shot this week and feel she has the same face in every photo. Time for deliberations! The judges feel Ann is beautiful, but not in her photo this week. Norelle looks dynamite, but has only one look. Yaya rocks, but is “too dancer.” I’m still not sure what that means. Cassie is looking like a cold fish, but sellable. Toccara fills up a room in person, but is dead on camera. Janice wants her gone. Eva has a great face and star power, but not much in the pictures. Everyone loves Nicole, but Jenn scares them all. They love her face, but it all stops there. Nole’ admits that Amanda has stolen his heart, and he loves her in all her shots. Kelle has the same look in all her pictures, and Nole’ thinks that in her latest, she looks a little like J. Alexander. Tyra says that ranking her with herself, she looks good, but with the other girls, she looks bad. They finally come to a decision. The girls come in. Tyra says there are nine photos, and those are the girls that will move on. The first girl called is Amanda. She is followed by Yaya, Norelle, Eva, Nicole, and then Toccara, who is told she was beginning to look like she was giving up. Ann is called up next and Tyra tells her it wasn’t her best shot, and she needs to work harder. The next girl called, is Cassie. Kelle and Jenn step up. Both start to tear up. The one girl not called will have to pack her belongings and leave. Jenn is told that from week to week, it looks like she doesn’t want to be there, and as much as she says she does, they don’t feel it. Kelle has had some of the worst photos, and some of the judges are beginning to wonder why she is still there. They see a model when they look at her, but not at her pictures. The girl called… is Kelle! Jennipher gives hugs to some of the other girls and leaves. She packs her bags and tells the camera that if she didn’t want to be there, she wouldn’t have come this far. Eventually, she feels she will be a model, but now is not the time. Next week, Cassie fesses up about a dark secret, which I think involves her eating habits. Kelle locks horns with Jay Manuel, culminating with him telling her that he can’t baby her. A practical joke that Ann performs leaves a sour taste in Cassie’s mouth. Looks like Cassie’s claws are coming out again! I can’t wait to witness it, but until them, here’s how I’m liking the girls: Like: Yaya, Cassie, Toccara, Kelle Not Sure:Norelle, Nicole, Amanda Dislike: Eva, Ann Phil Kural is a recent graduate from Temple University, with a degree in journalism.
