America’s Next Top Model 3, Episode 6: Who Fingered my Brownies?

by Phil Kural -- 10/29/2004
The girls take a beating this week, as they must go through modeling boot camp, race up fourteen flights of steps, bounce on trampolines for their photo shoot, and still endure all the judges’ harsh remarks. Cassie (right) has it even worse when her eating disorder is brought to light again. Could her eating habits be her downfall this week?

Previously, Yaya struggled with the judge’s feedback when they told her to stop showing so many “dance moves” in her photos. Rumors of Cassie’s eating disorder circulated around the house, causing many girls to have ill will towards her. Kelle broke down from all the criticism that the judges gave her, but it was Jennipher who was given the boot this week because the judges felt she didn’t want to be there. Did you read my interview with her? She really DID want to be there! Anyway, let me fill you in on what happened this week, and who went home!

We begin this week watching Kelle cry on the phone with her dad, as she tells him that the judges don’t see any intensity in her photos. She then tells the camera that her last photo shoot went horribly, as usual, and that she’s not sure what to do. She has been trying her hardest, but just can’t seem to get it.

Cassie tells the camera that she’s going to miss Jennipher, since she was pretty much the only girl she really connected with. Now she feels that she’s just going have to be a loner, but she’s used to that. As Amanda cleans the house, she says most of the girls are pigs and that she’s pissed off with having to clean up after everyone. Eva says the messy girls know who they are, as Amanda tells the camera that Cassie is the worst when it comes to cleaning up, and even refers to Cassie as a “sloppy slut.” You know what – Amanda really needs to get over herself because she isn’t anything special, and claims to be a loving mom that is coming off as a real bitch.

Tyra comes into the loft and wakes all the girls up. She gathers them in the living room and says that she’s there to talk to them about eating and body image. She brings in a friend of hers, Kate Dillon, who is a top plus sized model. Toccara is enthralled by this, and can’t take her eyes of Kate. Kate tells the girls it was rough for her to stay skinny, and that she went though an eating disorder. She says she gained 50 pounds, but still came back to the industry and made it as a plus sized model. In fact, she was the first ever plus-sized model to appear in Vogue.

Kate tells all the girls that they shouldn’t have to manipulate their bodies to be in the industry. Tyra says there is a healthy way to be skinny, and introduces them to Joy Bauer, who is there to give them some eating tips. Cassie tries to say that she does the whole low-carb diet, and Joy says that carbs are not a bad thing, but just need to be watched. After a little more advice, Tyra says that Joy, Kate, and she would have no problem talking with any of the girls one-on-one, and Cassie takes that opportunity.

Once alone, Cassie tells the three of them that she worries all the time about what she eats, and that she has thrown up in the past. Joy tells her that it makes her nervous to hear that, and Tyra suggests that Cassie should talk to someone. Cassie says that she just wants to be happy and doesn’t really want to talk to anyone. They lecture her a bit more, and talk about her when she leaves. Cassie talks to her boyfriend on the phone and tells him that she just wants to be happy, and if that means she has to toss her cookies after each meal, then that’s what she’ll do.

Apparently, Joy left some fruit and salad for the girls. Cassie heads to the kitchen and makes some low-carb brownies. After she cuts out a few, she leaves the rest in the kitchen, on the counter. Ann, thinking that she’s so smart and cute, takes a knife and writes in the brownies “clean your sh*t” while Eva keeps watch. Ann says she should have written “eat carbs,” but didn’t think of it first. Cassie walks into the kitchen and sees her brownies destroyed. She isn’t happy, and Yaya tells the camera that it’s very audacious for someone to disrespect Cassie’s food that way. Cassie continues to ask the girls if they know who did it, and of course, no one has a clue. She tells the camera that she asked everyone, and even though Eva said she didn’t do it, it’s apparent that she knows who DID. Since Ann is always up Eva’s butt, it’s easy to figure out who did it. When Cassie asks Ann if she did it, Ann lies right to her face.

Yaya puts on a shirt that says “Respect” in Portuguese and says it’s for Cassie, since people in the house aren’t respecting her. Amanda says nobody will admit to the brownie incident, and Cassie talks about it on the phone with her boyfriend. Toccara thinks she knows who did it, and Kelle is happy that there is going to be drama at dinner.

While the girls are at dinner, Ann looks at Yaya and asks what her shirt means. Yaya tells her it means respect, and she wore it because some girls don’t know what that is. Ann then admits to writing in the brownies and apologizes, while laughing. Cassie still doesn’t find it funny, and I don’t blame her. Yaya sticks up for Cassie, while Ann is laughing and tells the camera that some people think it’s funny to kill others, but it’s not a funny matter. Ann brings up Cassie’s eating disorder and tells her to drop everything. Cassie then goes off on Ann, and it finally looks like someone put Ann in her place. Ann still tries to defend her actions with the brownies, but Yaya tells her it’s time to grow up, and Cassie agrees. Wow, Yaya & Cassie: 1, Ann: 0.

Back at the loft, the girls get Tyra mail that tells them to be ready at 10:00 a.m. for their next challenge. When they arrive at the location, they find a boot camp-like setup. Eva doesn’t understand why everyone is happy about it because she knows it’s going to be tough. The meet Captain Leif Wade, who will be taking them through the obstacle course. He says that he won’t allow any of them to quit.

Yaya is already dreading this, and doesn’t want to get in the fatigues, while Ann says she can’t wait. As the girls begin the course, I can tell that it doesn’t look like much fun at all. Ann tells the camera that she has always been the best, or one of the best at everything she does, and Yaya agrees by telling the camera that Ann is easily the most competitive girl there. Cassie seems to be doing everything minimally, and complains the whole time, which makes Eva tell the camera that Cassie is a punk. Amanda admits that she wants the Captain to yell at her. Cassie admits that she doesn’t want to be there.

After their drills are over, Eva says that the point was to teach them perseverance and tenacity, and that’s what it did. The Captain tells the girls he will see them all again soon. As the girls head to another location, they walk in and find the Captain waiting for them. He greets them and tells them that they didn’t expect to see him so soon, then informs the girls that for their challenge today, they will have to race to the top of a 14-story high rise. Whoever wins, will be greatly rewarded. Yaya seems confident in the task, and so does Ann, while Cassie just states she doesn’t want to be last.

Eva is the first girl to go, and is followed by the rest. Eva admits that, halfway to the top, she has no breath. Kelle begins to walk and admits that she’s not an athlete. Toccara think she is doing well, and moves fast until about the halfway point. Yaya says she might have slowed down, but she never stopped, while Ann admits that she never fails at anything and always finishes. Cassie states again that she doesn’t want to be last. When Eva reaches the top, she is informed of her time, and told she now has to do a photo shoot. She can’t even breathe and is gagging, but smiles anyway and just goes with it. Kelle follows with her shoot, and as do Cassie and Yaya. Ann worries about the pictures, while Amanda just strolls over and strikes a pose, as does Norelle. Nicole actually looks pretty hot in her shoot, while Toccara tries to say, “No I don’t” when the Captain tells her she has a shoot, which she hates.

The Captain (I feel like I’m talking about Captain Crunch) gathers up all the girls and says he’s proud that nobody quit. Kelle came in last, followed by Norelle, Toccara, Amanda, and Cassie, who is thrilled she wasn’t last. Nicole, Eva, follow, and between Yaya and Ann, Yaya is the winner with a time of 1:10. That’s great! She is allowed to pick one person, and chooses Toccara. They will both receive an evening at Clay spa, being pampered on the roof. The other girls have to walk home! As the ladies get pampered with facials, Eva tells the camera that the person that needed a facial, got one. Eva, you bitch! Yaya tells Toccara that she keeps getting criticized for having dancer poses in her pictures, and is struggling with not being able to show a part of her.

The girls continue to walk home, and Cassie states that New York has disappointed her because it’s dirty and expensive. Kelle is the tour guide from the group, and states that finally it’s something she can do, as she trips on the curb. When the girls finally get home, Cassie says she isn’t feeing the competition right now, and doesn’t want to be there. She feels like her spirit is gone, and cries to her boyfriend on the phone, asking him if he’d be mad if she came home early.

Tyra mail tells the girls that they will get a jump-start to their day at 7:30 and to be ready. As the next day arrives, the girls arrive at the shoot, and are greeted by Jay Manuel, who is standing in front of an airplane. He says that although some of them still have issues posing on the ground, today’s shoot will challenge the girls to pose while in flight. Ann is scared of airplanes and is already shaking.

The girls get their hair and makeup done, and in the middle of it all, Jay takes the girls and tells them that the shoot is for YJ Stinger and energy drink. This will be an action shoot, and the girls will have to jump on a trampoline with the drink while their pictures are being taken. Kelle speaks up and tells Jay that she needs to be told if she is doing something wrong, and not just be told that she is doing well. Jay takes this the wrong way and tells Kelle that he can’t baby her through every frame. Ann tells the camera that Kelle wasn’t asking to be babied, but simply wanted to be told if she was doing something wrong. I agree with Ann. Jay is really becoming a jerk this season, and is starting to think he’s the sh*t. All Kelle wanted to know was the truth – if she was doing good or bad, and for him to not lie to her!

Cassie is the first girl to go, and although the photographer likes her, he wants her to give more variety. Eva goes next, and Jay says she was excited and had energy, but no range. Toccara is up next and her boobs are flopping everywhere, but the photographer likes her a lot. Nicole is next, and looks amazing in her makeup. She admits that the shoot was rough. Norelle goes next, and the photographer calls her bony and scrawny, which makes her have issues with positioning. Kelle is up, and she says the dress they gave her makes her boobs come out – sure enough, out they pop! They have to find Kelle another dress, and when they do, she is finally able to do her thing. She doesn’t look too great though, and Jay feels that she’s too self-conscience about her shots. Kelle starts to cry as she tells the camera that she has nothing positive to go on.

Ann goes next and her dress is very risqué, but she put a lot into her shot. Jay tells her that less is more, and tells the camera that Ann’s shoot is a big flop, and that she scraped her chin and elbow, as he makes fun of the faces she made. I’m so over Jay.

Yaya says she never knows what the panel will say to her about her poses, so she’s trying to get rid of the dance influence, which is not helping. Amanda is the last to go, and Jay tells her that she’s the only one that got the shoot. Yaya goes on saying that Amanda was doing dancer poses, but of course, the judges will love it. Jay tells Yaya that she needs to take the things the judges say and just cut back on the dance poses, not get rid of them totally.

Tyra mail tells the girls that someone is going home tomorrow. Ann says she is nervous because there aren’t a whole lot of girls left, so you can’t really afford to have a bad week anymore. The girls walk into the judges’ room, and Tyra greets them, telling them that this week they learned about health and fitness, and it’s now time for their sixth cut. She reminds them of the prizes and reintroduces them to the judges, including Kate Dillon, that plus sized model. Tyra informs the girls that they always have to be on point, so there test this week would be the pictures they took after running up the steps, along with their YJ Stinger photos.

Norelle is first. They look at her building photos, and she looks exhausted. Janice says Norelle looks to be in pain, while Nole’ actually likes it. They look at her YJ shot and feel it looks amazing. Kelle is second, and Janice calls her building photos horrible, and Tyra agrees. They don’t like her YJ photo either and feel it’s too contrived, while Janice tells Kelle to start showing expression. They take a look at Nicole next, and aren’t sure about her building photos, but love the trampoline photo – she does look awesome! I tell ya, Nicole is really getting ahead in my book. Toccara steps up next and they love the intensity of her building poses, but aren’t sure about the YJ photo, feeling that she didn’t have enough freedom.

Cassie goes next, and they feel her building poses are just too “modelly.” I’m not sure what that means, but Tyra actually likes her YJ photo, while Janice feels Cassie looks like a scarecrow. Eva steps up and says that she gagged on the steps as they look at her building photos. They say she looks too short in her YJ photo, and has to stop flaring her nostrils.

Amanda is next, and they love her building photos, even though you can’t see her eyes in them. They are amazed with her trampoline photos and tell her that the photographer called her the star of the shoot. The judges like Yaya’s photos on the building, but aren’t sure about her YJ shoot. They don’t really like the photo at all. Tyra says that she has to learn how to take advice, and find balance in turning her eloquence into high fashion. Ann goes last and they say her building photos make her look tired and pedestrian. Her trampoline shot is not good either, and they feel her face looks scary, while Nole’ says nothing is coming across at all. Janice, of course, hates it. Now it’s time for the judges to deliberate.

The judges’ hope that Yaya doesn’t lose her training, and take steps backwards instead of forward. They all love Amanda’s photo this week, and although Nole’ admits he’s not a big fan of Nicole, he loves her photo this week. Norelle did a great job, while Nole’ states that Toccara is plus-sized, but still pulling it off. Janice says that Nole’ just likes Toccara because he’s a plus-sized girl, himself. Nole’ agrees. The judges agree that Eva has a lot going for her, and that Ann is not very photogenic, but Tyra says it still might be able to be fixed.

Everyone agrees that Kelle is lovely in person, but screws up every shoot. Janice wants her to go home. Janice also says that Cassie doesn’t have a clue, and they are all confused by her photos. All the judges say that she needs to show more life in her shots.

The girls walk back into the judging room, and Tyra tells them that there are nine girls there, but only eight photos in Tyra’s hands. The first girl called is Eva. She tells Eva that they loved her photo this week. She is followed by Amanda, Nicole and Yaya, who is told once again to balance herself out and take critiques well enough to make the necessary changes to make her poses work. The next girl called is Toccara, followed by Norelle and Cassie, who is told that she looks amazing, but there is still sadness in her and maybe talking to someone will help with that.

Ann and Kelle step up. One photo is left, and the girl not called will have to pack her bags and leave. Tyra says she’s never had to do this before, but both girls are getting the same advice. Both of them are beautiful to the eye, but it doesn’t translate in the photos. They are the walking signposts for “pretty girl, not photogenic.” However, one may have a little more potential than the other, and that would be Ann. Kelle is eliminated. Kelle gives her hugs and heads out the door.

As she packs her bags, Kelle says that she tried, but there is only so much humiliation she can take. Not everyone is meant to model, and she knows that she has been called all types of bad things, but has grown from it all, and this has made her stronger.

Next week, the girls get their party on in the hot tub. Uh-oh, remember last time the girls partied in a hot tub? Amanda says the hot tub brings out the girls’ bad sides. Also, the girls get to meet some of New York City’s top designers. But is high fashion ready for plus-sized Toccara? Looks like we’ll find out! Oh, and now that I really love Yaya, I have decided to make her “MY Yaya” just like I did with Mercedes last season. Especially since she put Ann in her place! Ugh, I LOVE Yaya! Here’s how I’m ranking the girls in my head this week – have a good weekend!

Like: Yaya, Cassie, Toccara, Nicole

Not Sure: Norelle

Dislike: Ann, Eva, Amanda
