Surviving the Early Show: Billy’s Interviewby David Bloomberg -- 09/22/2006
As usual, the Survivor cast-off appeared on The Early Show the morning after being voted off. Let’s take a look at what Billy had to say. The first question asked is whether Billy knew on the way to the challenge that he was going to get jobbed. Billy says he had a suspicion, but in you never think anybody would stoop that low. So he thought it was just his own paranoia. It wasn’t until it actually started happening that he realized it! Billy is described as a big Survivor fan, and this was a dream come true. So what was going on – why wasn’t he playing harder? He says the opposite is true, he was playing in his own way – it’s that not working was part of his play. They were spending so much energy unnecessarily, in his view, they didn’t have to work all the time. Indeed, the host points out, Billy is a former marine but they played him to be some kind of lazy bum. Billy explains that he wanted to use his energy later, and then he’d show them. Hmmm. Guess it never got to “later.” So what would he have done differently? Billy says he would not have taken the lead role early on. Since he was the oldest, even if barely, he spoke up right off the raft, and that gave Ozzy the opportunity to take shots at him. He says Ozzy has unprecedented amounts of experience out in the wild, so it was easy for him to make a fool out of people. OK, the question people have been waiting for – what happened with his conversation with Candice? Billy says just as hungry people are starving for bread crumbs, he was starving for affection and she threw him some crumbs of affection, so it seemed like the best affection he’s ever had. It was a moment of weakness on his part – it happens. If it had happened in everyday life, he’d have asked her to have a cup of coffee and that would have been about it. So how did he feel about the tribes being split into ethnic groups? Billy says it was great for Survivor and terrible for him. He’s not very much into Latino culture and he knew it would be a problem blending in. He thinks the others were worried that since heavy metal is Caucasian music, that he was going to jump sides and join the Caucasians. I have to say, that sounds rather doubtful. But okay. But wait, there’s more! Not on The Early Show, but just minutes after he left the set, he was on the phone with me.
