Survivor: Cook Islands – Who Will Go in Episode 13?by Wesley Rice -- 12/14/2006
What do you call a guy with no skin on his scalp?
Fill in the blank: A smart Frenchman has a ___ ______ on his shoulders.
What do you call a guy with a Jeff Smith graphic novel on his noggin?
What do you call Yul and Becky after voting off Jonathan?
That’s right – the unflappable, infallible Yul and his faithful sidekick Becky have made an uncharacteristically boneheaded move by voting off the best possible final-two opponent, Jonathan. You’ll note that I don’t include Ozzy or Sundra with them because removing Jonathan and pairing temporarily with one of the Raros could allow either of them to eliminate Becky from her Amber Brkich spot before re-aligning with Yul to oust the remaining Raros. This ensures them both a stronger endgame. That said, let’s get to the CBS promos: Number 1: Two outsiders vow to fight to stay alive, knowing they will have to win challenges and manipulate players to stay in the game. Will they be successful in turning the tides? The only outsiders right now are Parvati and Adam. The question here asks whether or not they’ll be successful in turning the tide. A week ago I would have told you “no way.” Now? Let’s just say they need to know who to schmooze and how to schmooze. The “who” is Ozzy and Sundra. Not Ozzy OR Sundra. Ozzy AND Sundra. With three people, they risk a tie and the extreme possibility that Becky’s fire-building skills will outshine Adam’s or Parvati’s (which is about as likely as seeing a dumb Christmas movie released this time of year – Exhibit A: Christmas with the Kranks, Exhibit B: Deck the Halls) With four people, they can target Becky and open up a spot in the final two. If they’re really crafty, they might find a way to convince Ozzy and Sundra to risk another vote against Yul (burning his immunity while sacrificing one of them). That would leave him vulnerable at the final four. The “how” is to convince them both that with Becky and Yul together, there is no room for anyone else in the final two. Eliminating her is the key to the endgame for Ozzy and Sundra (not to mention Adam and Parvati). Number 2: The reward challenge forces Survivors to get dirty in exchange for a little pampering. It’s car time. I’ve got bets on Ozzy to win it (which, of course, gives him the car curse). It’s evil, Ozzy! Don’t touch it! KABOOM! Number 3: Relaxing time at the reward allows one Survivor to talk strategy with an enemy. Can this outsider plant a seed that could turn the game around? Well, if Ozzy wins reward, then that would mean that perhaps Adam or Parvati will accompany him (my guess is that he grants that opportunity to Adam for coming in second in the challenge). This is where Adam will attempt to convert him to the Brotherhood of the Raro. Too bad it’s not Parvati going with him. I’m guessing she’d be a little more skilled at persuading Ozzy than Adam will be. Still, the seed might take. Will it blossom? We’ll see. Number 4: Cornered about their ally’s strength, two tribemates talk about breaking up their alliance sooner than discussed. Hmmm… could this possibly be referring to Yul and Becky? Do they fear Ozzy that much? And if they do, how does breaking their alliance benefit them in the least? If anything, they’re stronger together. This one just doesn’t make sense to me. I smell a red herring. Number 5: One Survivor is caught trying to manipulate a member of the opposing alliance before Tribal Council. Could this be the end for the shrewd Survivor? Clearly the “shrewd” Survivor is a reference to Yul. However, it obviously can’t be the end for him, since he’s acquired immunity. What sticks out to me is the fact that someone is trying to manipulate him “before Tribal Council.” Is this referring to time or place? If it’s referring to time, then it just sounds like the normal scurrying done by the “doomed” before Tribal Council. However, if “before Tribal Council” is referring to placement (i.e. in front of Tribal Council) then I’m really looking forward to this. I love it when people bargain in front of the jury! Overall, the path is clearly laid out before the remaining Survivors. Ozzy and Sundra’s best bet is to get rid of Becky and then burn Yul’s immunity the next time while getting rid of Adam or Parvati. I don’t think we’ll see that happen, though. As much as I’m willing to concede that either Ozzy or Sundra might flip to benefit themselves, I don’t think they can reach the decision to do so together. Faced with a tie, they’ll both revert to form and vote with Yul and Becky. Adam is the next to go with Parvati as his immunity substitute.
