“I Wanted to Keep My Word to Yul” – An Interview with Survivor: Cook Island’s Adam

Adam became rather emotional in the game as he attacked Jonathan. In this interview, he explains why. And he also goes into detail about why he thinks voting off his allies was different. Of course, there’s much more than that too, so read on!

RealityNewsOnline: What was your strategy coming into the game?

Adam: I just wanted to feel everybody out and didn’t have a set strategy. The strategy was to not be very outspoken at first, just sit back and watch and get a feel for how everybody is, and then a little later be a bit outspoken. I didn’t want to be one of those people who goes right in and takes charge and gets voted out – like J.P.

RNO: How would you rate your own play?

Adam: I thought I did alright. I’m pleased. Of course I would have loved to have won the million, but all 19 of us are saying that. All in all, I’m happy. I think I did well. I’m content, I guess.

RNO: You kept attacking Jonathan for his lack of integrity, and even said it was hard to look at your allies in the jury box. But looking at the jurors, I saw three people that you turned on. How did your actions differ from Jonathan’s?

Adam: Let’s go down the list with those three. Brad repeatedly said things saying that he pretty much gave up. I’m not sure why he said those things he did. He kind of did that to himself. Rebecca mentioned several times that all she wanted to do was make it to the jury and she wasn’t really into it and she wasn’t really performing during the challenges.

And Jenny was just a mistake. I wanted whoever came back to not feel like they were an outsider. So the reason I voted Jenny instead of Jonathan was because I didn’t want a tie. If I voted Jenny, that’s what most people were going to do and Jonathan would not feel like an outsider. But it was a mistake.

How am I different from Jonathan? How much time do you have? (laughs) I didn’t flip-flop. I don’t know. He changed all the time. He turned his back on everybody.

RNO: But isn’t the game frequently about backstabbing?

Adam: Yeah. I understand that was part of the game. I don’t think he’s a bad person. I’m sure a lot of it was emotional at the time. I felt like I kind of took him under my wing and helped him along. And then he turned around and switched sides.

RNO: Were you really that desperate to get rid of Jonathan first that you were willing to promise Yul your vote, or was that game play in the hopes of getting a few more days?

Adam: Both. It was part of me trying to get a few more days and also at that point I just wanted to get further than Jonathan.

RNO: What did you hope to accomplish in the extra time you had because Jonathan went before you?

Adam: At that point, our backs were against the wall, and the only thing I could do was try to win challenges. I wanted to stay longer and maybe get Ozzy over. I knew it would be tough to get any of those four to crack.

RNO: From previous interviews, I know you were pretending to have the hidden immunity idol. But why did you seem so certain Yul didn’t have it?

Adam: I did not pretend I had the idol – I was told by Candice that Jonathan thought I had the idol and that was one of the reasons he did the mutiny. So I just played along with it. I never said I had the idol, I just let him believe I did have it.

As far as Yul, I never thought there was no chance he had the idol. I just didn’t want to tell Jonathan I didn’t have the idol. So when he asked me about that scenario, I responded because I wanted to imply that Yul doesn’t have it because I have it. I wanted to act confident that Yul didn’t have the idol to make him think I must have it.

RNO: How much of your flirting was strategy and how much was just having fun?

Adam: I always try to have fun. Why not? But I didn’t really have a set game plan because I wanted to feel everything out. But it’s for a million dollars, not just to have fun. So the answer is no, it wasn’t just for fun. I mean, I had fun, but I wasn’t out there just for fun.

RNO: What did you think of finding out that Yul’s decision to boot Jonathan was actually a group decision?

Adam: I still don’t think it was a group decision. I guess watching the show on TV, I found out that maybe the others had a little input, but Yul ran the show. Yul was the main person in decisions, but watching the show, I think Becky had a little more input. I still don’t think Ozzy or Sundra really had any input.

RNO: If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?

Adam: Not vote off Jenny! If Yul presented the same scenario to her as he did to Jonathan, I believe she would have told us about it and we would have figured out a way around it. I guess we held onto Jonathan too long.

RNO: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your time on Survivor?

Adam: I would have voted for Ozzy if Yul didn’t vote off Jonathan for me. In fact, I wanted to vote for Ozzy, but I wanted to keep my word to Yul.
