America’s Next Top Model 8, Episode 7 – Blasts From The Pastby Phil Kural -- 04/12/2007
Last week, Jael and Natasha landed in hot water, and made a bad impression on the guests at a high-profile party when they decided to jump in the pool. Why it wasn’t brought up at panel I still don’t know. Renee’s tough exterior was worn down when the other girls confronted her, and while Sarah had experience behind the camera, it didn’t help her in front of it. She was sent home when the judges felt that her pictures were too “posed.” Go figure. We’re down to seven, and boy are you in for a treat tonight! The girls are on their way home from the last elimination. Whitney says that she didn’t think that she would be in the bottom two, even though she knows she didn’t perform to her best. Now it’s on full throttle! When the girls get back to the house, Renee talks to her husband, who tries to cheer her up. She tells the camera that she’s going to try and be more sensitive, while Jaslene comments that Renee has changed since she was confronted. Dionne isn’t as convinced though, saying that she still doesn’t trust her. Renee even wrote Jael an apology letter, and while Jael is suspicious, she believes it’s genuine. Meanwhile, we get more of Brittany and her weave drama, until Christian Mare comes over to take it out. Whitney says that she has had a weave since 12, and it’s not that bad. Finally though, it’s cut out, and Brittany is back to normal. It looks like he took a rat out of her hair! In the morning, the girls have Tyra mail. It reads, “Whatever you do, don’t be yourself!” The girls know that it’s time for acting and Whitney says it’s her forte, so she can show she’s a threat. As they get ready, Brittany comments that she won’t be a pain now because of her hair. Natasha is on the phone with her baby, Angelina, and tells Dionne how much she misses her. Dionne relates and says it’s tough being away from her baby too. The girls arrive at a theater and are greeted by Tia Mowry from The Game on The CW. She says that as models, the girls will do a lot that has to embody different characters. They will need to use voice and movement, as each girl is told to take a hat and portray a character. Natasha is a witch, and it’s not far off, while Whitney is sexy with a leopard hat. Brittany is a silly jester and Renee gets emotional in a bonnet. Do I even have to say that Jaslene acts like a drag queen? Whitney works the stage and as usual, Jael is a ball of fire. We get more shots of Natasha that really make me wonder if she’s on drugs. In the end though, the girls are gathered up and told that the one with the most concentration, and the winner, is Renee! She is allowed to pick a friend, and she chooses Dionne, which shocks everyone since Dionne is not a Renee fan. She’s doing it because she wants Dionne to see she has changed. Their prize? A t-shirt that says “I voted for Renee” and “I voted for Dionne.” Wow, big deal. Nobody seems jealous, and the girls try to be happy about it. In the morning, Renee says that she’s happy she won. Whitney says that Renee is taking big steps to change. There’s a knock at the door, and when it’s opened, in come the REAL prizes – Renee’s and Dionne’s families! Renee’s husband and son come in, as do Dionne’s sister, daughter, and mother. She’s happy to see them, but pissed that her baby’s hair is messed up. Ha! She explains that her mother is paralyzed because she was shot. Meanwhile, Renee is playing with her boy and so happy to have him there. Dionne is just as happy as she does her daughter’s hair. Then there’s Natasha, who is happy to see new people, but sad that her child isn’t there. Before you know it though, it’s time to wrap it up and Renee says it was the best day of her life. Tyra mail arrives the next day. It asks the girls if they are ready to be “Spooked by ghosts of the past?” Natasha says she couldn’t sleep all night since she was thinking of her family. The girls then arrive at a studio and meet up with Jay. He says that they learned acting and characters, so they will need to portray some infamous characters from past seasons of the show, while showing off Payless shoes and accessories. Matthew Jordon Smith is their photographer. The girls are sent to hair and makeup! Jaslene is up first and looks at a video of Bre and Granola Gate. In comes Bre to help! In the photo, they fight over the granola bars. Jay thinks that Jaslene is being a drag queen, and we see Natasha crying in the back that she was skipped with her baby. What the hell does that mean? Jay slaps some sense into her, though, when he tells her to cast her emotions aside for the shoot. She watches a clip of Michelle from Season 4 with her flesh eating bacteria scandal. In comes Michelle, who helps Natasha with her shot. Jay loves her, and even Michelle tells Natasha that she did great. Whitney knows that she isn’t as strong as the other girls, as she sees a video of Shannon from Season 1 refusing to pose nude. Shannon comes out, and she is supposed to shield Whitney, who wants to pose nude. Shannon still has gigantic teeth, and that’s all I’ll say. Whitney struggles as usual, and Jay isn’t feeling it. Jael watches her clip next and it’s Rebecca fainting during judging in Season 4. In comes Rebecca, and she still looks great! Jael begins her shoot and Jay thinks that instead of looking like she fell, she’s being a bit too sexy and all over the place. I agree – you would think they were lovers! Brittany watches her video next, and it’s of the twins! Amanda and Michelle come out to join her, and now they are triplets. They refer to Brittany as “the sister from another mister” and I have to say that they look great! In the back, the girls grill the girls from the past and Whitney is happy to see them, and loves that they are all still working now that they are off the show. Renee is up next, and she’s going to be Joanie from Season 6, and the infamous “pulling out the snaggletooth” incident. Joanie is there to help, and while they take their photos, Jay thinks that Joanie might actually be stealing the shot, even though I think Renee looks great. Dionne watches a video of Kim making out with Sarah in the limo during Season 5. Dionne tells the camera that she “Ain’t no f***ing lesbo,” calling Kim boyish. Kim walks out and they laugh about it, but it’s clear that Dionne isn’t comfortable. She says she barely kisses her boyfriend, but they start doing their shoot and Dionne gets into it, saying she can’t believe she’s having fun and feels so comfortable. Once home, the girls find some Tyra mail and discover that tomorrow, someone will be going home! Whitney says that she was in the bottom two weeks in a row now, so the pressure is on. Jael doesn’t think the judges really get her since she’s so complicated, while Jaslene tells the other girls that she doesn’t want to be that girl that starts out strong and then falls. I don’t want her to be either! The girls file into panel as usual. Tyra reminds them of the prizes and introduces the judges, including Ms. J. who is now wearing seven ruffles and looks like a potato chip, and Matthew Jordon Smith, the girl’s photographer this week. Now, it’s time for individual evaluations, and Whitney is up first! Whitney steps forward and the judges look at her photo. They like that she’s showing emotion in person, but don’t see it in her photos. She says that she felt that she had energy on set, and gave it her all. The judges aren’t buying it. Brittany is up next and looks great without her weave. The judges love her photo with the twins and Nigel is impressed. Twiggy is fawning over it too. Nigel says that she posed to match the twins, which was important. Jaslene is up next and they look at her granola bar photo with Bre. The judges don’t think she is getting stronger and that she needs to find her footing. Now it’s time for Natasha. When the judges see her photo, they think she’s making flesh eating bacteria look fierce. If you say so! Tyra likes that she is taking their advice and actually using it, as demonstrated by her mouth. Dionne steps forward and the judges think she looks dumpy. She fixes her shirt and all is well. They look at her photo and Twiggy is in love. Ms. J. think she looks great, even though Dionne admits to being uncomfortable. Matthew says that she was actually his favorite of the day. Jael is next and when the judges see her photo, they think it’s too “posey” and that in person, she’s a bit robotic. Jael goes on some long rant and nobody can tell what the heck she is saying, including me. Isn’t Natasha supposed to be the girl who is hard to understand? The judges nod their heads and Jael walks away. Finally, we get to Renee. Twiggy loves her photo this week and Renee says that she tried not to worry and “ugly it up,” but Tyra tells her not to make it too ugly. She wants her to pull it back just a little bit. Now, it’s time to deliberate, and here’s what the judges had to say about each of the girls: Dionne is jumping leaps and bounds. She looked great this week and is all-around amazing. Renee is loved by Twiggy, while Ms. J. feels that it doesn’t take much to make her look old. Whitney isn’t a model to Twiggy (surprise, surprise) and Tyra adds that when the camera is around her, she is down. Nigel agrees. Jaslene is just too drag to Matthew, as Tyra and Ms. J. do her famous catalog pose. Jael drives all the judges crazy with her mouth and Twiggy can’t see her ever getting cast for a job since nobody can understand her. Natasha has progressed and Nigel really likes her. Twiggy thinks she is becoming very sexy, but Ms. J. thinks that she is a bit packaged. Brittany is standing out, and really managed to pop in her photo this week. The girls come back in. Tyra says that there are seven girls, but she only has six photos. The first girl called is Dionne, and Tyra tells her that she is becoming a true model. Natasha is called next, who says “thank God” in Russian. Tyra tells her that she is what the competition is about. Brittany is called next and Tyra tells her that she needs to have a stronger physical presence. Renee is called, followed by Jaslene, who Tyra says is falling and falling. She wants to see the girl from the first two weeks who was called first. Only one photo is left, and it either belongs to Whitney or Jael. They hold each other by the waist and Tyra says that they should hold tight, since they both have what the other needs. Tyra tells Whitney she needs to shine when the camera is on her, not just in person. Jael needs to learn how to speak eloquently, like Whitney – she can’t just be pretty. People have to understand her as well. The final photo goes to – Jael! Whitney takes the news well and Tyra tells her to work it out and keep at it. Whitney hugs the girls and says that she really didn’t think she was going home. She’s sad, and says that any girl who says she didn’t care to win is lying. She feels that modeling might not be her avenue, but since Tyra believes in her, she’ll continue to try it. I saw this elimination coming, so there’s really not much more I can add. Next week, the girls try out their interview skills on one another, and it looks like Jael will piss Dionne off. Oh, and it’s time for the girls to pack their bags! Here’s how I’m ranking the girls for next week: Brittany If you haven’t already, be sure to check out these other recent America’s Next Top Model articles:
