Dancing with the Stars 4, April 24: Steppin’ to the Bad Side

by Jill Jones -- 04/25/2007
Last night on Dancing with the Stars, the couples performed a variety of dances including a group swing number; several stars stood out for their technique and ability, while others fell to the bottom of the pack. Tonight, we find out the next couple whose time on the show has come to an end.

If you read my recap from Monday evening, you know that I missed some of the performances and judges’ comments due to the weather. To make up for it, I’m including a list of the dances that were performed by the couples and the songs that accompanied each performance:

  • Kym and Joey – samba – “A Little Respect”
  • Heather and Jonathan – paso doble – “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina”
  • Edyta and John – mambo – “Mambo Swing”
  • Laila and Maksim – cha cha cha – “Hold On, I’m Coming”
  • Karina and Billy Ray – jive – “I Love to Boogie” (So do I!)
  • Julianne and Apolo – rumba – “Cool”
  • Cheryl and Ian – paso doble – “Waiting for Tonight”

Am I forgiven?

Tom and Samantha welcome us to the program while the crowd goes crazy. They also review the previous night’s dances, including Billy Ray’s “bubba chicken.”

Next, Tom and Samantha review the current standings:

RANKINGSTARSCORE
1 Apolo 28
1 Laila 28
3 Joey 27
4 Ian 24
5 Heather 23
6 Billy Ray 21
7 John 19

Len tells us that he, Bruno, and Carrie Ann have selected the group swing for the encore performance. I guess I should have seen this coming because everyone was wearing his or her costume from that routine at the start of the show. If you missed the dance when it was originally performed, trust me when I tell you it was chaotic, disturbing, and energetic at the same time. I lost three pounds just watching it.

Joss Stone performs “Super Duper Love” while some of the pros dance. Included in the performance is Julianne’s brother Derek, who is a professional dancer. Joss sounds great and the dancing is superb. I think I’d rather watch this again than the group swing number.

It’s time for the audience’s thoughts on last night’s show. The amusing thing isn’t the comments that are made, but rather who makes them. JC Chasez, Gabrielle Carteris, George Wendt, and George Lopez are just a few of the celebrities in the audience. In addition to watching the show, you can now play “Spot the Celebrity.”

Tom and Samantha are ready to reveal the first two couples that are moving on in the competition. Julianne and Apolo are safe in addition to Laila and Maksim. Hooray for them!

Members of the cast of Dreamgirls are now set to perform to “Steppin’ to the Bad Side.” These men and women make dancing look so easy, yet I know it isn’t. Their moves are smooth and seem very natural. Great job!

Great. Samantha interviews Julianne and Apolo, and Laila and Maksim backstage. She basically asks stupid questions and flubs up her lines.

Just when I think it can’t get any worse, Jimmy Kimmel and Guillermo teach us the foxtrot. Yikes. Apparently the couples are performing a ballroom and Latin dance next week, and this is supposed to prepare us.

Joss is back and sings “Tell Me About It.” She’s also not wearing any shoes. I bet she has some of Maksim’s sweat on her feet. Sweet!

The stars and professionals tell us that they are losing their minds at this point in the competition. We see them doing zany and crazy things like making faces at the camera and laughing. I know… the hilarity never ends.

Tom and Samantha bring us more results. The next safe couple is Kym and Joey; however, the first couple under the red spotlight of doom and gloom is Edyta and John.

The stars now explain what happens before they go on stage. Apolo exercises and John reads a book. Joey does whatever he can to annoy Kym. The sweetest thing that happens is Ian kissing his father for luck and inspiration. Sigh. If he gets eliminated tonight, it’s going to stink just because of this one moment.

Tom and Samantha let us in on which of the remaining couples are safe. Cheryl and Ian are advancing (whew), as are Karina and Billy Ray. That means that Heather and Jonathan are in the bottom two.

With only minutes to spare, our somber hosts announce which couple has been eliminated. Unfortunately for their fans, it is Heather and Jonathan. Heather pulls out a list of people she wants to thank and acknowledge on her way out. I doze off a bit. Heather encourages us all to go vegan even if it is just for one day a week. I’ll try, but while some people need coffee for energy, I need cow.

Everyone hugs and kisses while the show closes. Only six couples remain in the competition. Are you surprised by tonight’s elimination or was it Heather and Jonathan’s time to go? Be sure to write to me at the address below and join me next week as we move one quickstep closer to the finals.
