Dancing with the Stars 5, September 25: It’s Raining Men!by Jill Jones -- 09/26/2007
Tom Bergeron and Drew Lachey welcome us to the show. They also introduce the stars and their partners; nobody trips going down the steps. Next, a recap of the previous night’s action is provided. If you’d like, you can read my recap instead. Len Goodman weighs in on his thoughts about the women’s performances. He tells us that everyone did well. Josie Maran looks confused over his comments; her score was low. A demonstration and explanation of the foxtrot and cha cha cha are provided. Basically, the foxtrot evokes feelings of old Hollywood; it is done gracefully and elegantly. On the other hand, the cha cha cha is fun and cheeky. It is flirty and includes sharp, crisp movements. Now that we are all caught up, we can get down with some dancing! Edyta Sliwinska and Cameron Mathison kick things off. Cameron tells us a little bit about himself including the fact that he is goofy. Edyta refers to Cameron as a stud. Cameron explains that he isn’t flexible; he suffers from leg perthes disease. He’s also hard working, but if anyone can handle him, Edyta can. They’re dancing the foxtrot to “Moondance.” Edyta’s dress gets caught up in Cameron’s legs a few times; I’m just glad he didn’t fall. He doesn’t seem the least bit nervous, but some of his moves are a bit rough. The couple is elegant and they appear to have fun. Overall, Cameron does a nice job. Len compares Cameron to a faucet and eventually says that he did a good job. Bruno Tonioli tells Cameron that he has potential. Carrie Ann Inaba explains that Cameron and Edyta look good together, and that Cameron made a lot of women happy tonight. To kill time, Tom explains the rules for voting. You can go to www.abc.com for more information. Drew also talks to the couple backstage. Finally, the judges are ready with their scores. All three judges give the couple a seven for a total of 21 points. Up next are Karina Smirnoff and Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather. Floyd tells us that he’s the best fighter in the world. Karina tells us that Floyd is very energetic. During practice, Floyd gets frustrated and tells Karina her wants some easy moves. She walks out on him. Eventually, he apologizes and they get back to work. They are performing the cha cha cha to “I Like the Way You Move.” Karina and Floyd incorporate some hip-hop elements into the dance, but they blend in well. Karina almost loses her dress at one point, but she recovers nicely. Floyd’s posture is poor, but this is something that can be worked on. I like the energy of the dance and I think that Karina will be able to do more with Floyd than she could with Billy Ray Cyrus. Can I also say that Karina’s body is insane? Bruno changes Floyd’s name because of his energy; he also tells him to channel the force. Len says that Floyd has potential; the audience boos. Bruno says something about doing rounds; he covers his mouth guiltily. Carrie Ann wants Floyd to treat Karina more tenderly. She explains that he’s not fighting Karina. Carrie Ann, Len, and Bruno all give Karina and Floyd a six. Their total score for the evening is 18 points. The audience boos. The next couple to perform is Julianne Hough and Helio Castroneves. Helio tells us that he fell in love with racing when he was a kid. Julianne says she’s not giving up her trophy from last season. Julianne also hopes that Helio has rhythm since he is Brazilian. At one point before the show, Helio crashes while racing. Thankfully, he is OK. They are dancing the foxtrot to “Bewitched.” Julianne choreographs a great routine. The moves are fun and the couple executes them well. Helio is playful and does a wonderful job. This is one of my favorite foxtrots this season. Carrie Ann tells Helio that he is a natural. Bruno compliments the couple on its chemistry. Len simply says that the dance was great; he’s impressed. Carrie Ann and Bruno give the dance an eight; Len gives it a nine. Julianne and Helio have 25 points. Anna Trebunskaya and Albert Reed are ready with their first dance of the competition. Albert talks about his looks. Anna tells us that she hasn’t been on Dancing with the Stars for two seasons because she’s been competing. She also like’s Albert’s dog. Albert goofs off during practice; it’s quite comical though. They’re doing the cha cha cha to “A Little Less Conversation.” The dance starts off with Albert walking as if he is doing a runway show. Anna rips off his jacket to reveal his chest; it’s nice, but it doesn’t compare to Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s goods. Am I right? Assistant Editor’s Note: You are. The routine is fun and playful, but Albert’s moves aren’t as sharp as they should be. I hope the couple sticks around for a while though; I love Anna! Len says that watching Albert was like watching a stripper; just sit back and enjoy! Bruno talks about Albert’s crotch action. Carrie Ann doesn’t know what to say except that the dance wasn’t exactly a cha cha cha; she still enjoyed it though. Each of the judges gives the performance a seven. Anna and Albert have 21 points. Backstage, Drew mentions for the 82nd time that he was on the show. Sigh. He also asks Albert what he’s willing to do to stay in the competition. Albert promises the women that by the end of the season, his shirt will come off completely. Drew says that Albert just secured some of the male vote too. The next performance is from Kym Johnson and Mark Cuban. He talks about his money. Kym tells us that she’s a fierce competitor. Seven weeks before practice began, Mark had a hip replaced; he breaks the news to Kym the first time they meet. Kym worries when Mark holds his rod; he tells her that he holds it all of the time. They’re performing the foxtrot to “King of the Road.” Mark is dressed like a bum and Kym is wearing a beautiful pink dress. Mark sings while he dances; that’s a bit annoying. I’m not sure how I feel about the performance. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t wow me either. Bruno tells Mark that he went for it, but his technique needs work. Carrie Ann wants Mark to focus on his posture and to make sure he keeps his tongue in his mouth. I have to confess that I always stick my tongue out when I concentrate. In fact, it’s out right now! Len says that Mark did a good job. Once again, each of the judges gives the couple a seven. Kym and Mark have 21 points. The last couple tonight is Cheryl Burke and Wayne Newton. Wayne talks about his career. At his first meeting with Cheryl, he gives her a bouquet of roses. What a gentleman! Wayne has a black belt in karate, but says that dancing requires more energy. Cheryl tells Wayne to bluff if he needs to while dancing. They are doing the cha cha cha to “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything.” Wayne doesn’t do a lot, but he certainly keeps up with Cheryl. He’s also not light on his feet and he needs to work on his lines. Carrie Ann calls Wayne charming and suggests that he open up his hips. Len says that Wayne showed a lot of great basic moves. Bruno wants more hip action. It’s all about Wayne’s hips tonight. Carrie Ann and Bruno award the dance with a six; Len gives it a seven. Cheryl and Wayne have 19 points. Backstage, Cheryl zings Drew by saying that Wayne is her best partner so far. Tom reviews the current standings for the men. Since you’re such a lovely bunch of readers, I’ll throw mine in as well.
Overall, the standings are as follows:
Tomorrow night, one couple’s time in the competition will come to an end. I’m predicting that Kym and Mark will be the recipients of bad news. What do you think?
