America’s Next Top Model 10: Why Amis Is Not A Top Modelby Phil Kural -- 03/17/2008
I’m starting to think that it’s bad luck this season on America’s Next Top Model if your name begins with “A.” We’ve had the first three girls sent home so far this season, and all their names begin with “A.” I’m not counting Kim since she’s a quitter. The most recent girl to bite the dust was Amis, and to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t shocked at all. I enjoyed Amis’ personality, but as a model, she just wasn’t cutting it for me. I don’t even think she was taking the competition seriously. There was no sense of urgency or will to win with Amis, and I kind of felt like, to her, it was just about the experience. That being said, how did she do with following the Top Model Tips? Let’s conduct an investigation. As always, the first tip is to be open to, and welcome, change. This is probably the one tip that Amis had no problems with. Just like Jael from Cycle 8, I think you could have put a purple wig and tutu on Amis, and she wouldn’t have cared. She was a little out there anyway, so any change to her is probably seen as a positive thing. There was never a time when Amis seemed uncomfortable or unhappy about what was going on around her. Heck, even posing with meat had no effect on her. Now, the only thing is that I don’t think Amis had any kind of style of her own. She was put together in a way that looked like she rolled around in the closet and whatever stuck on her was what she wore for the day. Sure, she was welcome and open to change, but I think that was due to the fact that she just didn’t care. Our second tip is to know something about the fashion industry. There is no doubt in my mind that Amis had no clue about the fashion industry, and that reflected in almost everything she did this season. From the skip down the runway to the outfits that she wore to panel, Amis was clueless when it came to the industry. Again though, I think this is due to the fact that she didn’t really care about what was going on. I felt like she was under the impression that the crazier and weirder you are, the better you will do. In a way, that’s true, but you at least have to show some talent and growth. With the way Amis was progressing, I’d say she was going backwards! The next tip tells the girls that you must always practice posing, walking, and working on your flaws. Amis had a ton of flaws. These aren’t personal flaws, but when it applies to modeling, she was flawed up. Her walk was terrible. We saw this in the first and the third episode. Ms. J. was not impressed at all, and was on the brink of frustration when she skipped down the runway in the challenge because she wanted to “try something new.” We all know how Ms. J. feels about new tricks down the runway. Stick to serving it up with a fierce stomp, and he’ll be happy. No skipping! Amis had a ton of other flaws as well. She knew that the judges were watching her closely because she wasn’t made from the typical mold for those who appear on the show, but Amis never went out of the way, from what we saw, to make it look like she was doing what she could to be better. In fact, she slept until the last minute before going to panel. That would have been prime time to get ready and look high fashion to the judges. Amis just didn’t care. Our fourth tip says that personality counts, and here’s one tip that Amis definitely had no problem with. From the beginning, we knew that she was a character, performing for the judges during the semi-finals, and coming across as the bubbly girl with an edge. Turned out she was just a little crazy, and a bit uncontrollable. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if another reason she was sent home was because her personality was a bit too much. Amis’ personality reminded me of a cross between Jael and MY CariDee. Her problem was that she was so far out there, like Jael, that the judges couldn’t bring her back in. She had the cuteness of MY CariDee, and seemed to be funny, I just don’t think the judges, or the viewers, ever actually got it. That being said, there’s no doubt to me that Amis was picked to be on the show because of her kooky personality, so when it comes to this tip, she did well. The next tip is to focus on yourself, not the other girls. I don’t think Amis had any problems in this area. We never really saw her getting involved in all the drama, and she kept a pretty light attitude from what we saw of her. Thinking about it, most of the time this rule has been broken this season has actually been OVER Amis, like when everyone was so concerned when she was sleeping so late before panel. Who cares? I mean, she’s the one that will have to deal with the consequences, not you. And her outfit for panel as well. I don’t see why the other girls were so upset over it. I mean, Amis got the boot over it, so you have to realize that these girls will weed themselves out. You don’t have to worry about it. Amis didn’t really go out of her way to critique and worry about the other girls. She did her own thing, but in the end, her own thing ended up getting her sent home. This wasn’t because she was too caught up with the other girls, but simply because she was a mess. Our next tip says you shouldn’t fight with the judges. Amis did a fairly good job at rolling with the punches at panel. She did have some comments for the judges, but she never came across as rude to them, or standoffish. However, she did seem like she didn’t really care, and that played a factor in her being sent home. We’ll talk about that during the next tip, though. We never saw Amis get rude or anything with the judges, so we’ll just say that she followed that tip well. Our next tip says to show the judges you want to win. Honestly, here’s where I think that Amis had the biggest problem. Not once did she ever show the judges that she really wanted to win. If anything, she came off as not really caring, and just taking the competition as it came. She never showed the judges that she was working on herself or improving, as shown with her skip-walk that almost sent Ms. J. into a tailspin. She wasn’t working on her look, and wore a very hideous outfit to the panel, not even caring when the judges questioned her on it. She’d rather sleep than get ready to see the judges at panel, hence her looking like a mess during her elimination, and the whole time, she never worried. When there is no sense of urgency behind closed doors, that’s one thing, but when it’s crystal clear to the judges that you aren’t even trying, that’s when we have a problem. Amis never went out of the way for this competition, and it showed. You have to communicate to the judges that you are there to win, or they will weed you out so quickly your head will spin. The final tip is to show confidence, not cockiness. I don’t think Amis showed either. She wasn’t confident, but she surely wasn’t cocky either. She was bored, in my opinion. There really isn’t a whole lot to say when it comes to this tip, since Amis didn’t really give us much to work with in this department. It’s almost like she was just a space filler for the season. I would have rather seen some of the girls that were sent home during the semi-finals instead of her, since I think they would have served it up much better, and wanted to be on the show more than Amis. Oh well! When going over Amis and how she did with the tips, I think it’s pretty clear to see why she was sent home so early. Amis never went above and beyond to prove to the judges that she had what it took to be a top model. There were several times that she had to impress the judges, but decided to sleep in or not even try. She was fun, but never really brought that into her photos. Amis struggled with her walk and her posing, but never felt like she had to do anything in order to change it. The judges were frustrated with her not growing in the competition and seeming like she didn’t even care to be there. As we went through the tips, we saw time after time how she went against them and didn’t even think twice. For all these reasons, I think it’s pretty clear why Amis is not a top model.
